Never mind the derailing.

@Tibbsy: Thanks mate, I'm glad to hear that by documenting my projects I could convince you it's time to register and comment. Even more so, as that is the same thing that happened to me, I saw the work of Migsula, PDH and Shockwave and I felt I had to comment on it and start my own blog.
Listen to Peter though, he knows me well enough and he's right. Despite being a paragon of modesty and humbleness I can't deny I'm a shining light ... See? My head is like a dirigible already...
I'm looking forward to your participation in this blog.

  • It's been too much to do the last few days, so I couldn't spend as much time on the hobby as I'd liked to, but I guess that's normal. Considering that sculpting the tracks was pretty time consuming I'm afraid there isn't that much to show you, but what the hell...

  • Update time!
Still not done with the whole thing, there is a lot left to be done, but the pictures give you an impression of what I've been doing the last two days.

interesting way to make tracks... to actually sculpt them that way i think is a new aproach... what did you use for the "backbone" of said tracks?

When you said sculpt the tracks I thought it was just a miss use of words or a wrong quotation but no you meant sculpt the tracks, that has got to be a new way of doing that but worked and worked well. Did you sculpt it flat then let it dry and bend it around the track wheels or well I don't think you can do it any other way really………

Any way looks great so far and love the tracks incase you did not guess

Thanks for the inspiration as I am starting to pull stuff together ready to start my own thread (when I get it all sorted) however I think it will be more of a random works project as I don't play just buy cut stick and spray black mainly.

Despite any rumours I don't have a new year's blues, I simply didn't get around to post the last few days. I didn't have time to work on the archivist as well, so you didn't miss out on any significant progress.

But before I moan too much, let's respond to your posts first:

Viktor von Domm wrote:interesting way to make tracks... to actually sculpt them that way i think is a new aproach... what did you use for the "backbone" of said tracks?

The backbone is also putty. I arranged the "wheels" in the right shape and formed a ribbon of putty and ran one of the wheels over it, to create the small holes for the cogs to fit into. Then I put the ribbon around the wheels. After curing I took out the wheels and sanded the outside of the ribbons into a more or less even shape. That's the backbone, everything else was sculpted on top of it.

PDH wrote:Ok I'm now very confused by the track set up....I cannot wait to see how you connect the archivist*. Don't spoil it with hints or teasers...wow me! Like this (*I imagined the legs on the lord being removed and him implanted into the centre of the track unit.)

Hehe, confusion is good! I'm glad you like it and I won't spoil it no worries. Teasers of the actuall miniature would ruin the overall effect, so I'll keep you up to date on the chassis, but noone will see the operator before he's finished.
Your idea of removing his legs is rather close to what I had in mind originally. At the beginning I wanted to make be suspended in a walking frame, so he would have hung in a harness that does the walking for him and I wanted to remove the armored parts of his legs and replace them with naked atrophied/vestigial legs. The walker idea got discarded and I couldn't find the right replacement legs.
In the meantime I considered to let his legs end in stumps above the knees, but today I had a different idea again and I think it's the right one to allow for all the other horrible things I want to do to him.
    I4D... I like that.

Thanks, the missuse of words was a likely explanation, but in this instance in fact wrong. I accidently meant what I wrote.
The links of the tracks were sculpted directly onto the mentioned backbone ribbon. I didn't let them cure first and glued them on later, that would have been even more of a pain in the arse. It took three sessions each 1-2h to sculpt all the links...

    Update:
Played some stupid game till six in the morning and didn't get up before twelve, so most of the planned hobby noon was wasted in bed, but I nevertheless did spend two or three hours on the archivist.
Mostly minor testing though. Which part has the right look, where does it fit and so on. I finally (kinda) decided how to model his legs and brought his arms in position, bla bla bla... nothing to show yet.
Hang on and let's see what tomorrow brings...

well your revelations bring me to a new question... as a fellow german...what do you use for sculpting...do you use the all known brands everyone uses or do you have a secret to have so much of the good stuff available for such projects as sculpting tracks? i bet it took up quite a big amount of different sculpting material for this...
and...another question...i want to start working for real with plasticcard ...i do own now thanks to dstein quite a good and diversified range of different stuff from plasticcard...where i am still lacking in is the right glue for that... can you point me to a good germany found product to help me in my endeavors?

    many thanks ahead^^

For glueing plastic card I use either the good old Revell plastic glue with the needle applier or for bigger surfaces Humbrol plastic cement with a brush applier.
For sculpting I have a box full of different materials, but I mainly use some standard tools.
Clay shapers with silicone tips (everybody's darling these days), some standard sculpting tools (mainly a #5 from Tiranti, but for special purposes I also have various dentist tools you can get on any fleamarket) and of course the putties.
I don't use gw's gs, but just because it's more expensive than equally good competitors.
I mainly use grey stuff from Galeforce 9, which comes in two big tubes with 20x the amount of material for the same price as gs and it's also more convenient to get out of the packaging and stays fresh, no contact between the components.
If I need my putty to be softer, but don't want to make it too sticky by adding more of the white component I mix in simple Fimo.
On the backbone of the tracks I also mixed in some brown stuff and more of the black component to make it sturdier and easier to file.
For big/rough jobs I have Milliput white, which is like ceramics when cured.
I also have Magic Sculpy for sculpting a whole miniature from scratch, but not for conversions as it needs to be baked much like Fimo.
Other tools you might want to have at the ready are a square piece of glass as a perfectly smooth working surface, baking paper which creates a nonstick surface and a plexi glass brick for rolling and flattening putty (you can get that from any arts supplier for a horrendous price, or go the long but cheaper way and get from people working with plexiglass).

There are many stores where you can get this stuff in good ol' Schland, but considering that you live in Berlin you might know http://www.shop.battlefield-berlin.de/, which is my favorite store anyway (bit overpriced at times).

many thanks for that short list of needful things!

i wouldn´t have guessed that it is possible to mix FIMO into the mix of another putty... awsome idea...as i have way too much of that stuff collecting dust...

as for the tools... atm i am pretty set with those...have a bunch of dentist tools...which is also great of putting the fear in my sons...if they don´t brush their teeth properly..."see...this is what the dentist will be using on you..." lol

i recently baught me a cheap nailskin remover...silicone tipped...way bigger than any sculpting tool...but i thought it might be worth a try...and i even haven´t tried it yet^^

the revell glue i mostly use for glueing mini bitz together...works like a charm...after your comment i tried to use it for plasticcard as an experiment...how long would you deem curing time for such a thing?

i just ordered two tubes of testors tube glue...hope that will give me the much needed edge in my works...we will see...

personally i have experimented with GS from GW and i think the blue/yellow-band which sits side by side is a totally dumb idea...even with my limited sculpting knowledge i saw the flaw of already mixed and beginning to cure GS in the middle... the GS of galefore 9 i have used frequently and i have to say it is much better quality by far...
i have yet to finally try the milliput i incidently baught at battlefield...a shop i think is maybe better to trade with online than in person...the guys there tend to be what peeps might think of a stereotype of the scene...it didn´t ring that well with me...just baught my stuff there that one time and never returned...

well...again...many thanks for the hints mate!

and i do hope too to see soonish some pics of the current project(s)...

    cheers, vik

I am with you Vik on the see it might come in handy approach I have bought several things that way (some pay of some don't ) but you never know that nailskin remover have you a picture ? Just might be something that could be a good investment.

Hell the other day the misses was putting on her make up and she left her eye shadow stuff on the side opened (no I did not put some on well not me ) and it was this real Rich bronze colour then hay presto idea hit home …,…. I got a mini that was undercoated and took the applicator thing they use (small sponge on the end of a stick) and rubbed it gently over the armour and i have to say the out come looked pretty dam good so with a bit more experimenting it could be a new way of painting models or at least a source of weathering powder.

essentially it is this i bought

    Spoiler:

you will get it in most beauty shops or drugstores or whatever equivalent you have in GB...

and yep...hobby is a good excuse to buy a multitude of things ...tools materials or as i am a scratchbuilder by heart...some odd packages of food or other suplies you get in the stores...

i just forgott whom i have to thank for some of my brushes... because makeup aplicator brushes are really good for sponge technics and of course drybrushing... really there are so many odd things in those beauty stores a creative hoobiist can´t/shouldn´t turn away...

You find the weirdest things in the weirdest places but they can turn out to be a vital and useful add to your hobby, I think I will go through the misses make up bags she will thank me for that I ma sure

You really need to get back to your IG steam punk army love the concept of steam punk and the empire pistolers heads and weapons work so well

the tool is actually not bigger than your average hand...the tip is not bigger than the last joint of your small finger...it is soft, but since it is not meant for sculpting a bit of cleaning up beforehand i would suggest...

bet your queen won´t be amused when you raid her handbag^^

well...better a slight hobby related derail than to get ones thread sunken down and out of the recen threads^^

and yeppers... maybe i get something done in the afternoon/night time...then an asap update will follow...(sounds trite as i write that...have promised in the last days quite often...^^)
