  • Hehe, we will see who likes whom or what...

  • In other news, first day of vacation and I worked and the archivist. Damn, I just couldn't work on the Retiarius. I hate that, but it's in a difficult phase and I'm subconsciously avoiding to tackle the problem, plus my imagination is overflowing with the archivist (just like it was two weeks ago with the Retiarius ).

  • This led to serious progress on the archivist and after consulting my bitz advisor Dennis this evening, I will be able to glue most of him together.

  • Nevertheless I will use the most needed counterweight to creativity, discipline and thus will force myself to get the next phase of the Retiarius done tonight. After passing the choke point I think I might pick up the pace again.

  • Now I just need to find the right set of tracks for the archivist...

    archivist....what's an archivist?

Archivists acquire, manage and maintain documents and other materials that have historical importance for individuals, organisations and nations. They have an important role in the information society as guardians of the memories and records that shape the identity of various groups and societies.

Archives are held by all sorts of organisations, including local and national government, businesses, academic institutions and hospitals. They may include books, papers, maps, photographs, prints, films and computer-generated records. A large part of an archivist’s work is related to making information accessible to users, increasingly in digital format. Users include researchers, academics, other professional staff and the general public.

Hope that helps not meant in a sarcastic way

  • Hey folks, made some progress on the archivist today and finally had the time to stow away all my recent purchases, man I have to much stuff!

  • I thought it might be interesting that I decided to make two conversions of the nurgle lord, the other one will be a combat servitor of a kind.

  • Coming back to my progress on the fatso, I mentioned I was looking for suitable "tracks", that is because he will sit in a motorized wheelchair. Think Vriess from Alien 4, but with a touch of me and grimdark blanchian nightmare.

  • So it's like this:
    Spoiler:

    Or this:
    Spoiler:

But of course with a hint of this (no seriously not):
    Spoiler:

  • Anyway, the tracks proved to be a problem, the ones you can find in the 40k range are either to small (space hulk drone), to big (sm salvo cannon) or just don't have the right look (troyan demolition vehicle). I looked near and far for other solutions, but didn't find any. My fiance suggested using tracks from a classical scale tank, which was actually a brilliant idea, especially because I hadn't thought of it at all.
  • Unfortunately none of the models in my stock had the right size or design, so in the end I came back to what I knew all along: If you want it to be done properly, don't be lazy, start from scratch and go the long way.

  • So that's what I did today, I built most of the chassis. It's not done of course, but it's going to be after christmas, once I found the time to scratchbuild the actual tracks I can glue it all together and add the missing elements (which is a lot, so far it's just the very core).

  • Here's a little sneak peek for you:

i like the inspirational stuff you showed... also have you considered that for some sort of twisted influence on fatso:

    Spoiler:

baron harkonn was my imidiate association for that fatso character...

and one question...on the bitz collection pic... the piece you have lying in the right low corner... from what kit is that... i still have a sprue containing that piece but it was from an ebayacution and i don´t know where it is from... i suppose it is from inquisitor? a SM packpack piece?

    and merry christmas mate!

@Vik/PDH/Neil: There are no inquisitor parts involved, no sm backpacks and I'm not sure what Neil meant, but there are also no "necro parts". You may keep guessing, if you get it right I'll tell you. Otherwise I might provide a picture of the original part when I'm done with the track unit.

@Peter: For the actual tracks I considered plastic card, but eventually tried sculpting them first, because it allows for better design choices.

There will be an update tonight.

And Shrubbers arrange, design, and sell shrubberies.

"Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say Ni at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land, nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress in this period in history." -Roger the Shrubber

  • No update yet, sorry for that, things didn't go as planned.

  • I'm currently sucked in by the multiplayer mode of Space Marine, but it's getting better and I'm not overdoing it that badly.

  • I finally had the chance to have a quick game of Necromunda today. Basicly just an excuse to test some of the terrain I've been working on.
It's been a while and my gang is still OP, so we decided to play a shootout, in order to minimize my advantage of having 12 models compared to my buddy's 7.
He was allowed 4 and I rolled for 3. I was lucky with the lineup and only got killers (heavy stubber, grenade launcher, handflamer, double plasma pistols 2 shots each).
And then everything went down the... Well with a little bit of bad luck when rolling the initiative I managed to have every one of my guys shoot last.
I didn't even fire a single shot before I bottled...
Well at least it was motivational for my pal.

  • I'm going to spend half a day on my Archivist tomorrow, so I'm positive there will be something to show you then.

    Update:
  • I spent almost the whole day sculpting, exactly like I had planned. Sculpting each single joint of the track has proven time-consuming yet more or less worthwhile. I'm going to provide a picture after cleanup and assembly, right now the putty is still curing and it will need some sanding.

  • To make up for the lack of project related pictures I'm taking you a step down memory lane.
When we visited my parents for christmas I browsed through some old photo albums and found a picture of my two favorite christmas memories (my favorite being the one, when my parents tricked me into believing I had got everything I was supposed to get and than brought in the brand new NES ).
You may guess what the other one was... a 2nd edition starter box of 40k of course! And to be honest I haven't been that excited by any present ever since (as you might derive from the crazy face...). So back in '97 when christmas was still the real deal joy looked like this:

  • Spoiler:

  • I don't know about you, but for me it was an ambiguous moment when I started to buy my toys myself.

Dude, I have to thank you for this incredible blog... I've been browsing Dakka for about 2 years now and have never seen the need to register before, but I've just spent the last several hours going through every page of this thread and I have to say it was an incredible inspiration to me.

So much so that I'm going to dig out some of my bits and get converting!

Yours also has the distinction of being the first thread I have commented on, and will be the first thread I subscribe to Please keep up the fantastic and awe-inspiring work.
