Hey man! Long time... no... anything! I swear, I thought I'd have more time during the 1-class holiday schedule and work... but I just fell off the Earth here...

I love that guy! The repair work is particularly good on the cape, and I like that steam-punk powerfist he's got too... Oh yea, where do you get your bases from? You used them on your Delaque gang too...

Keep it up, man! I'm watching from a distance... hearing the call of the paint brushes again. Hopefully sometime soon.

Great to have you updating with new models.

Not a model I would have thought of, I like that...the helmet is my favourite part. The pose is top notch, bolter arm is bob on. Cannot make out the detail on the power fist due to the shine.

So get him painted so I can see the power fist.

Yep good to see your stuff again mate, the positioning of him to the rear of the base is quite daring as it makes him look of center ,But i like it , sometimes get tired of models striving to symmetrical , the pose is nice too, i agree with pdh about the bolter and the powerfist ..is it an ork one?

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Bases:
  • I use the bases from Eden (Taban Miniatures), they are great, especially the "junkyard" and "techno" ones (I also have the bamaka wasteland bases from them, but they have to much earth and wood on them for my necromunda-likes).

  • Position:
  • I didn't even think about it, Neil. That was just the right place for him to stand, plus I really wanted to counterweight his archaic looks with some worn and torn industrial environment, so I needed some space to set him into the scene. I considered using a bigger base, but this one just fits snugly imo.

  • Pose/Weapon choice:
  • I'm happy you like his pose it all started with sawing off the arm, I really had to get rid of the flintlock pistol, again there had to be some counterweight.

  • I considered many loadouts, but I didn't want him to point a weapon/finger at some enemy, you see that aaaall the time, it got old. Keeping the idea of having him aim a handheld firearm was worth consideration, but at some point I thought a powerfist would be the best weapon choice and that I could make him shake his fist, you don't see that every day.

  • And when I browsed through my collection of power weapons I came across this rare specimen, which I have meant to use for quite a while now, but never found a model worth bearing it.
It's not an ork weapon (would be way bigger, right?), but it has some retro/orky charme. I'll post a better pic of it once Theoderich got primed. With the final pose I'm still not sure whether I imagine him saying "Make my day, PUNK!" or "Strike, baby!".

  • I'm happy you mentioned the bolter, Peter. I really like that piece too. With all the fancy shmancy weaponry I normally use I really wanted him to have something that shows his status without making him look like poncy.

  • The fact that every Astartes or Sororita "out there" wields a bolter and that it isn't that impressive in game terms either, easily makes us forget what a bolter would really be like: Raw Power!

  • For that simple reason I didn't modify it at all (come on, that was hard for me!), instead I kept it simple. A bolter is overkill enough, even without a scope and a drum magazine, plus I really picture Theoderich more like a "from the hip" kind of guy.

  • One detail that was really important to me, was drilling the barrel open with the right bore. I'm really happy with the extra wide diameter of the muzzle, it underlines the size the projectiles must have.

  • Visor:
  • Glad you like it, Pete! I've got to admit though, it's pure genius...

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. hello baiyuan

the model looks good and all but i am more sold on how you decided what to do to the model than the actual model itself... the ideas and plans you made... this is much more interesting to me...which i somehow find quite frightening to me... the considerings of yours to weaponry and posing and to what to get rid off of the original model i think makes this model for me special... that really sells the model to me...i hope i haven´t stepped on your otes with my musings here...

    cheers, vik

Of course not, Viktor. I like to hear that someone is interested in the preparing thoughts put into a conversion, because I normally give things a lot of consideration, which can kill the flow from time to time, but normally results in a closer "relation" to the character.

In other news, I've finished the leather on Samarianne and started working on the golden areas. I'm calling it a day now though, too tired to paint properly.
Oh right, Theoderich is primed and ready to be painted when I finish Samarianne.

Wow ... this blog is awesome.

    your minis are super awesome,

your ideas are super super awesome....

There is a question I'd like to ask and forgive me if you've already answered it.. i've just been spellbound by the pics in this blog...
For your Radius mini, what plasma pistols are they? Where did they come from... I'm a big fan of plasma weapons myself and for my gang and those plasma pistols are absolutely gorgeous!

Also, alas you're in Germany.... Would love to get my Escher gang together and have a round or two on a table top with your delaque gang..(um..... no innuendo there)
Though having said that, your guys will absolutely without a doubt thrash my girls... my girls are brand new.... haha.

    I'm flattered guys, thank you!

  • The german poet Wilhelm Busch once said: "Envy is the most sincere form of praise." And I'm willing to agree as long as it's turned into positive energy and productivity.
I'd be happy if my work inspired some people to get creative, just like others inspired me to start this blog. I'm sure without it few of my recent conversions would have been finished, or even thought of. I myself massively envy for example PDH and Migs for their output of lovely painted and converted miniatures and how Neil does what he does is a complete enigma to me, the guy must be some kind of creative rainman.

  • Endless supply of cash... I wish I had one of those! Just because I'm spending quite a lot, doesn't mean I have that much more! But I can't complain either, you know what people say about money, it's one of those things where only too much can be enough.

  • About commitment and imagination, those are things nobody (but you) can give you. Find inspiration and don't give up until you've put it to practice. I think it's about dedication and stubbornness. Cortaro aka the buzzsaw ogryn, was a looong and painstaking project and there were several points where I didn't know how to continue and had to let it rest for a while.
Also, be careful what you wish for! Whenever I have a big project running I'm really obsessive. It's hard not to think of it all the time.
I had a nice little fight with my fiance last week, because we had planned to watch a movie with my sister and ten minutes into the movie I bailed out and went back to my workshop, because I couldn't let go of my unfinished work on the golem. Considering I had already spent half the day upstairs converting, I actually understood why she was upset about me just leaving.

  • About the Radius' plasma pistols, they are from the khorne berserker sprues:
    Spoiler:

And look how gakky the hand and grip are positioned! Incredible...

Totally agree with what you said but I just have the mind set of a gold fish I start a project with great enthusiasm but suddenly lose interest because something else inspires or catches my attention.

The other thing is I start a project get stumped cant figure a way to create the result I want and push the project to one side to gather dust, mind you this some times turns out to be fun because when you come across it again you do look at it with a fresh interest which can produce great results.

Wilhelm Busch was indeed a wise man as it is only the sheer quality of your work that has driven me to want to recreate said piece, it was an idea similar that I had considered my self due to the pose of the miniature swinging a saw of some kind but did not know how to achieve the look which you did amazingly.

As for the fight we have all been there and at times you can agree with upset from abandoning said commitments however I am sure there will be plenty of times the favour will be returned, plus was the movie chic flick in witch case understandable.

Well great work and thanks for sharing and inspiring I will give my self a good kick up the arse and asked Santa for plenty of commitment and imagination this Christmas.

That's nice, if you're just as good with characters as with tanks I have no doubt your blog will be great.
Airbrush-wise I would say any proper double action airbrush should do the trick. No need to spend a lot of money as a beginner.

You know me Vik, just because it doesn't need much to change it, doesn't mean I'm going to do just as much, quite the opposite. The fatso has been in my head so much I couldn't sleep last night, my head was buzzing with ideas.

Fear not, Peter! Even though my creativity is a bit jumpy at times and I have to follow spontaneous ideas whenever they hit me, I'm gonna see all the other stuff through. So before I actually start converting the fatso, I'll finish the diving suit, but putting together some mental sketches and the necessary bitz is a must do for me. That way the whole concept can mature for a couple of weeks before I actually tackle the project.
I'm also still not done with Samarianne and I'm making sure to paint a little every now and then. I really mean to change my paint/convert ratio towards 1/1.

I managed to spend an hour or two on the hobby today.
Apart from organizing the pile of new bitz I had ordered, I also tackled the initial phase of "Nurgle Lord to the Archivist" conversioon. As usual I started by cutting off everything that didn't match my plans and rearranged his limbs, then I put together a pile of bitz that I "could" end up using on this project and created a first mock-up with the best elements and blu-tac.
