Just as the title, do you think the Space Wolves codex will come out around the time the Orks codex comes? They have been announcing them in groups of 3, then releasing them over time, I am interested in the Space Wolves, but I don't want to buy an index if the codex is around the corner.

Definitely don't buy the index. The codex won't be too far off now and you can use Battlescribe until it's available.

The rumours point to SW and Orks around June but obviously they could be completely wrong.

Yeah I think a big summer release with Space Wolves & Orks is hugely likely at this point.

Godtear - Complete range.
LOTR SBG - Isengard - 730.
Guildball - Butchers & Hunters.
Age of Sigmar - Tzeentch - 2640.
Warhammer 40k  - Primaris  - 2140.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters - 5797.

Check out my Youtube channel, The Ascended. Dedicated to the game Godtear by Steamforged Games - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC14OOp4kCaD17S--2HYmcsw?view_as=subscriber

Odds are you'll need index for some rules though like all armies

I will have to heavily assume that the index is only really needed for certain units, like shrike for Tyranids, or certain styles of Chaos Sorcerer, those are the only two I know, as I researched the Death Guard and Tyranid as possible armies. If you don't plan on playing those units, I see no need for the index, and if GW want to play the, "you have to buy all of our books to play all of your army" then I guess I am just not going to play all the units for an army.

Really looking forward to what the Space Wolves codex brings to the table(pun intended). With it being one of the later codex's I hope GW learned from past mistakes in some of the other codex's and it is both internally and externally balanced

My problem is a month ago Long Fangs were on the GW store, you had to search for them by name, but they were there. Now, instead of Long Fangs, they pushed a lot of the Primaris units into the SW part of the store, which worries me that they are lowering what made the SW's unique, and just tossing in Primaris units as fillers. There is an "upgrade kit" for possibly two units, if you used all the parts given, for 13.50, but instead of just having a Long Fang squad, who already looks the part, you would have to just bring stock Primaris, or convert them for an almost 60+ dollar price hike. I am not saying it will happen, but I also wouldn't put it past GW.

How many Space Wolf units don't have a model? Are there many?

SW + Orks is one of the rumors. The other being SW + Black Legion. Or maybe we won't get a SW box set at all! Who knows.

The SW and Orks codexes will release soon after each other by virtue of being two of the only codexes left. Probably at least 1 month before they're out, but I wouldn't be surprised if they release in June.

I don't care about getting a box, no one I know plays orks so I wouldn't be able to split it with anyone, but if they put a special model you can only get in the box, like the Lord of Cantagion, Armaglaive whatever mini-knight from the AM/Necron box, and I am sure there are others, then I would think about getting it and just giving away the orks to someone at a local shop. When I first started wanting to get into WH 40K, I wanted to play the Space Wolves, but then a buddy of mine wanted to as well, so I moved on to Adeptus Custodes then Death Guard. He moved on to want to play Tau, so I really just want the codex for SW so I can get into the hobby.
The only thing that has halted my progress is my noticing the SW had no codex yet, so now I wait, thinking about what models to get, hoping they stay the same, and the Wulfen, Arjac, or the dreadnoughts don't get nerfed in any way.

Meh, i built all my long fangs using SM devastator squads(i think thats what the heavy weapons squads are called) and left over accessories from the grey hunter/blood claws kit as they didn't have actual long fang kits available when i was building up my infantry squads. If i remember correctly the shoulder pads and heads work in primaris marines so any further conversion would be a bit of a pain but could still be done. I personally dont have any desire to collect the primaris models anytime soon but I'm confident i could make them wolfy with the ridiculous amount of left over pieces i have.

My worry is not that I wouldn't be able to build them, but they would be missing from the codex, so having them would be useless. The move of the Primaris marines into the SW portion of the store, which they had only the base marines, now the Hellblaster, Reivers, and a patrol detachment, makes me think they are going to remove the Long Fangs, and put the Hellblasters into the spot, making it easier for them to produce less models, and then tossing out "upgrade kits" to allow us to make them more SW, and less Primaris.

I can’t see them ever getting rid of Long Fangs. They’ve been a major and characterful part of the Space Wolves army for almost 3 decades.

I’m and Ork and Space Wolf player so waiting on both of these codexes. These are either the last two codexes of the cycle to get every faction a codex or at the very least the last two main factions. Something big for both is expected or they wouldn’t make us wait for such popular factions. They would have just rolled them out with the other Xenos and Space Marine codexes.

A box set with both in would be welcomed by me.

Yeah i really cant see them scrapping long fangs all together, besides even if they are not in the codex they would still be in the index which means you could take them regardless.

The only codex changes I see them leaving out are some bike options, and (less likely) combining Fenrisian Wolves and Cyberwolves.

If they do leave any index options out of the codex, you will still be able to take the index models as per the designer commentary. So if Wolf Guard bikers aren't in the codex, or have different wargear in the codex, you can still take them or their index wargear even once our codex comes out.

I mean Necron Pariahs no longer exist, so there are instances of them removing units, Even though the Long Fangs aren't in the store, if I can get them some other way I should be fine as long as the use of the Index rules is okay until they change that.

When it comes to Long Fangs I really hope they either keep them as-is, or my regular opponent doesn't roll his eyes too hard when I use legacy weapons options. Having 5 lascannons and a Terminator with Cyclone missile launcher sure is fun. Not the most efficient, but fun.

they won't scrap long fangs, now they MIGHT remove options long fangs have that are unavaliable in a devestator kit. but they won't scrap longfangs.

I'm hoping for a Leman Russ model to be released with the new codex. I know there is a FW model but I would love a 40k adaption with rules to use him in 40k.

Then Long Fangs will lose nothing and gain access to Grav weaponry.

Are there armies that didn't lose something in codex? Character options for one are pretty quaranteed. Forget bike and jump packs on characters without index for example

Isn't Lemus Russ dead? I am not completely up on the lore, but aren't dead heroes removed from use in 40k?

I think it would be cooler for the SW to get a specialized Lemus Russ tank, since he is/was their Primarch.

They never actually say he died. If I remember correctly he suddenly fell to his knees, was escorted out and left on some sort of mission into the warp or something like that. He left Bjorn as chapter master and was never heard from again. The Space wolves have repeatedly went out in search for him and legends say he will return at the end times. According to lore we are getting close to "end times" so I think it is a possibility for him to return. Then again he could just as well be dead.

I do think it would be cool if they had a specialized leman russ tank though, maybe one with a helfrost cannon.

No they're not. Tycho is still in the Blood Angel Codex and he's been dead since the 3rd war of Armageddon.

He charged off into the Eye of Terror with his personal Wolf Guard, and left Bjorn running the Chapter. He's supposed to return during the Wolf Time (basically SW's Ragnarok basically).

I've been out of the game for a while. What is the current Space Wolves meta?

Back in the day playing Space Wolves was all about having 10 man Grey Hunter squads, marines with Bolter, Bolt Pistol and close combat weapon, and two guys assault weapons like Flamers, all mounted in a Rhino. You used the Rhino to get into close range, no matter who your opponent was. Anything you really didn't want to assault, like 'Nids or Orks, would go down easy to Bolters & Flamers. MEQs, who could shrug off Flamers and Bolter shots, you got into assault with and beat them by having two swings to their one.

Now the game seems to favor MSU (multiple small units), and Marine players are Combat Squad'ing their infantry. That's fine for Ultras and Darkies. How are people playing Wolves these days?
