Hello and greetings from Canada! Total picture count: 100 Many of you may have seen my work on recovering an Imperial Guard plastic kit with Forge World upgrade, a plastic and resin Vendetta Gunship flyer: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/749735.page Before: After: I had so much fun restoring, modelling and painting the Vendetta that I acquired not just one, but two ( 2 ) Forge World Vulture Gunships from eBay!! Here are two colour pictures courtesy of Forge World; first some GW artwork, then a FW-completed Vulture Gunship: This proved to be fortunate, as the new 8th Edition 40K Rules states that a "Air Wing Detachment" must be composed of at LEAST three ( 3 ) Flyers minimum, with a maximum of five ( 5 ) Flyers The Vulture Gunship is mostly resin model as opposed to a resin "Upgrade Kit", but it does retain the use of many Valkyrie plastic kit parts such as Wings, Landing Gear, and Tail Struts. The next five ( 5 ) black & white photographs and courtesy of Forge World: I decided to acquire a Forge World Aircraft Punisher Cannon Kit as well:

I once met an Englishman in a home brew club who taught me the sage advice of "Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance"
Thus I find it important to have the proper tools and equipment for the job at hand;
GW sells a Saw ( $ 36.00 Canadian ): https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Citadel-Saw-2017-Non-Sale
I would love to try out the Citadel Saw seeing as how it has multiple blades; however, I use the Atlas Super Saw:
Also, working with Resin means being protected from inhaling dust:
I purchased the Vulture Gunship Kit on eBay, so when it arrived I was eager to unbox it ...
After trimming the components off the sprue they were finished for gluing by filing and sanding. The parts were then scrubbed with an old toothbrush in warm soapy water, and laid out to dry thoroughly:
Vulture Gunship Assembly Instructions:
Here is the Vulture Gunship, the build is a "Mock Up' as it is not glued yet:
After full assembly and gluing the Vulture Gunship together, ready for spray priming with Krylon Flat Black:

The inspiration for the paint scheme: OV-10 Bronco : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Rockwell_OV-10_Bronco However I was particularly inspired to paint the Vulture Gunship as a specialized model that was flown by the VAL-4 "Black Ponies", colour scheme at the bottom: I had seen the new Dark Angels Nephilim Jetfighter released in my issue of White Dwarf and it looks quite sharp: Here is the Vulture Gunship after spray priming Flat Black, on the right hand side of the photo: So I started applying highlights with Mechanicus Standard Grey, but then I realized the Vulture Gunship looked very drab and sullen:

I then researched the Bronco OV-10A in Vietnam War era action:
The topside of the Vulture Gunship was then re-painted with a Base Coat of Caliban Green, after which Highlights were painted on by Layer of Knarloc Green:
The following two Vulture photos were taken in a home-made Lightbox ( the Vendetta Gunship is in the Lightbox ) :
Here is the Vulture Gunship in the Lightbox, with the Chin Turret in place using Rare Earth Magnets:

The underside of the Vulture Gunship was painted completely with a Base Coat of Mechanicus Standard Grey. Metallic parts were painted with a Layer paint of Leadbelcher before Highlighting with Chainmail : Fine details on the Vulture Engine such as Power Cables and Fuel Hoses were also picked out with an Army Painter "Insane Detail" brush: The same brush was used to complete the Cockpit Details; also, originally the Vulture Gunship Crew flight suits were painted Troll Slayer Orange, as in the stock photo of the Bell AH-1 Cobra: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_AH-1_Cobra The entire Vulture Gunship was then given a Wash, which is a custom mix of Devlan Mud, Vallejo Black Glaze, Vallejo Brown Glaze, Drying Retarder, and water. This really helped give the Flyer a weathered look, as well as blending in the armour panels:

_Really_ nice job- especially the weathering. I'm getting to the point where I think I'm fairly good with washes, but did you highlight the edges of the panels by just painting the contrasting line along the seams? And then the wash help blur that out a little? Very nice effect! (I need to try that on my next vehicle.)

I truly do miss Devlan Mud as Agrax Earthshade just isn't the same formulation... I learned to blend flat armour panels on my first Flyer, the Vendetta Gunship and yes sir I did highlight the edges of the panels first, trying to replicate the formula with a mix of water, Drying Retarder, Vallejo Brown Glaze and Vallejo Black Glaze but alas it's just not the same... I admit that having worked for Games Workshop, i am a "Chronic Drybrusher" which is a technique to mass-produce basic table-painted armies. However; the Brush Blending technique produces much more artistic results; and the key, as Mike McVey mentioned, is to thin your paints down to the consistency of milk. At this point the Vulture Gunship was painted to a level of completion where I felt Decals could be added. Once again I looked at historical pictures and photos of the AH-1 Cobra and had some designs in mind, using decals from the Imperial Guard Hellhound Transfer Sheet: The Vulture Gunship pilots were changed out to "Hollywood" and "Wolfman" as I decided on a final Flight Crew paint scheme: The chin-mounted Heavy Bolter and Cockpit were painted in the same technique: Base Coat: Regal Blue Layer paint: Macragge Blue Highlight: Ice Blue Here is the Vulture Gunship with Vehicle Nose Art and Emergency Escape markings:

I researched World War 1 photos in colour, and in order to make the 120mm Oval Trench Flying Base more realistic, I bought some resin "Spent Ammo Casings" from Anvil Industry, which makes some fantastic products.
Here is a link to the Anvil Industry website: http://anvilindustry.co.uk
Here is a link to the Spent Ammo Casings: http://anvilindustry.co.uk/Empty-Ammo-Casings
The "Spent Ammo Casings" sprue was spray primed with Krylon Flat Black, then painted with a Base of of Vallejo Model Color - Gold ( 996 ) for the bare brass casings and Mechrite Red for the shotgun shell casings.,
This was allowed to dry before cutting off the sprue with a pair of Hobby Snips and glued down with Gorilla Super Glue, then given a Wash of Devlan mud after the glue was allowed to dry thoroughly.
The Spent Ammo Casings were Highlighted with Vallejo Gold again while the shotgun shell casings got a Highlight of Mephiston Red, making for a trench that saw a lot of action!

You may have noticed that the Vulture Gunship was armed with Aircraft Multi-Lasers and Hellstrike missiles in a previous photo:
While the Hellstrike missiles are readily available from the plastic Valkyrie kit; once upon a time, Forge World made resin Aircraft Weapons. The following black-and-white photos are courtesy GW / FW:
Forge World Aircraft Multi-Lasers:
Forge World Aircraft Autocannon:
Forge World Aircraft Hunter Killer Missiles:
Having worked at Games Workshop, I acquired a bunch of Space Marine and Imperial Guard plastics to scratch-build my own custom Aircraft Weapons.
I even took the opportunity to incorporate Magnets so that the Aircraft Weapons could be swapped out quickly!
I decided on Multi-Laser and Autocannon, here are my completed Aircraft Weapons:
Aircraft Weapon Multi-Lasers
These were built with a Multi-laser from the Imperial Guard Sentinel, Battery Pack from Space Marine Predator, Targeter from Space Marine Vehicle Hunter Killer Missile
Aircraft Weapon Autocannon
The Cognis Autocannon comes twin-linked from the Adepticus Mechanicus Ironstrider, so two Autocannon Ammo Boxes from the Space Marine Predator completed these:
Aircraft Hunter Killer Missiles
These are from the Imperial Guard Vehicle Accessory Sprue Mark 1 and came with a rectangular enclosed missile launcher, they can be seen at the top middle part of the sprue:
I acquired a couple used and new, then prepped them with a file:
Before spray priming Flat Black:
After spray priming with Testors:

Whereabouts in the UK are you by the way? It has been a great many years since i visited but I made it all the way up North to Hadrian's Wall and saw Edinburgh Castle, and came back with some Beano books... The second Vulture Gunship came in, so it was Prepped, Primed, and Painted in the same manner as the first in order to maintain a consistent Unit appearance. However when it came to painting Nose Art, I wanted to paint a mouth with teeth so I did research on the Bell Ah-1 Cobra, associated Vietnam-era paint schemes and artwork: Artist's rendition of helicopter attack in Mekong Delta Here is the second Vulture Gunship Work-In-Progress: Here is the first Vulture Gunship: Vendetta Gunship:

Apparently the original post here was deleted accidentally. Okay i am going to try to re-construct this post from memory... Constructing the Imperial Guard Valkyrie was a lot of fun; the plastic kit is available from Games Workshop, and in no time i had the parts removed from the sprue, cleaned with a file and prepped for assembly. I carefully applied green Painter's Tape to areas that i wanted to be able to use plastic model cement, and then spray primed the assemblies with Krylon Flat Black: Painting the kit in sub-assemblies made it possible to complete the interior details before assembling: The pilots have been left in their blaze orange jumpsuits with white vests and helmets, as I was trying to decide on a helmet design ...

BattleFoam had a sale during the summer, so I took a chance on their product and ordered the 2 Valkyrie Foam Tray : https://us.battlefoam.com/ig-2-valkyrie-foam-tray-ig07bfl-4/
(Astra Militarum) 2 Valkyrie Foam Tray (BFL-4)
Description:
This tray can hold two Valkyries, two sets of detachable wings and multiple weapons.
Custom text is not available on this product.
4 inch (102 mm) thick tray.
Tray Dimensions - 15.5W x 12L x 4.25H" (394W x 305L x 107H mm)
With the KR Multicase and BattleFoam, i would be able to carry three ( 3 ) Flyers comfortably and carefully; however, I still have two Vulture gunships to pack for play.
I'm thinking of using " pick and pluck " style foam as the wings are removable but held in friction-fit, allowing for the fuselages to be packed in a smaller container hopefully.

Belated Happy New Year's and the first post of this thread for 2019 ... with the Lunar New Year approaching as well, on February 4, 2019
Good news and bad news. First off, the bad news; I am quite tardy at updating this Blog and i apologize, the last post was back in October of last year...
Good news: I did receive the BattleFoam double Valkyrie Foam Tray at a surprising low price of $ 29.71 USD , including Shipping to Canada as i took advantage of a Sale they were having.
The Foam Tray was priced at $ 24.99 USD and i received a discount of $ 7.50 ; this tray can hold two Valkyries, two sets of detachable wings and multiple weapons.
