This weekend I watched Upgrade. This movie was pretty fantastic. Decent to good, sometimes great acting with some AMAZING cinematography and really fun action beats. I would put it in the same vein of movie as Equilibrium. Everyone who likes some fun action should give this movie a go.
Currently sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.
The cinematography was the big break out for me. The way the camera moves in a good portion of the film is really innovative and adds a lot to the action on the screen. You get a small sampling of it in the trailers lil fight bit. It's much more.... robust? Pervasive? in the actual movie. More of it and used in some other more interesting ways.

I heard that it was essentially a very solid grindhouse film. If you go expecting your mind to be blown you'll be disappointed but if you are looking for a violent, fun, rollercoaster that is what you will get.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Accurate.
Also no, not everything is in the trailers. They do a pretty good job of primarily showing you stuff from fairly early on. Also the plot makes a few twists and turns that i didnt see coming and were pretty good.

So kind of like Three O'Clock High?
Also, not sure this movie needs/deserves two threads:
I quite enjoyed it. It does a surprising amount of world building for such a small budget, and leaves a lot of story hooks for sequels or Sidequels. It reminds me of the first Terminator in that way. The action is enjoyable, with some interesting emotional stakes, especially near the end. The acting is solid, especially the lead.
If you've ever grumbled about studios only making sequels and reboots, here is a good, original movie for you to support. Just sit back, relinquish control, and enjoy the ride.

I wouldn't say that. There is at least one major plot twist that you think you see coming a mile away that they end up putting an interesting enough spin on to make it worthwhile.
We Munch for Macragge! FOR THE EMPRUH! Cheesesticks and Humus!
Sorry about the thread necro but I figured this was preferable to starting a new thread about a niche movie. Apparently this is possibly getting a tv series sequel. I enjoyed the movie as a simple unpretentious action flick (similar to the Jennifer Gardner Peppermint movie). It wasn't perfect by any means and it certainly didn't deserve any awards but it was a relatively low budget sci-fi action movie that scratched some particular itches for me. Ymmv.

Saw it, it's nothing more than an average B movie. It's basically tha same old american revenge movie in which the protagonist's wife gets murdered and he struggles to find answers and vows to get revenge. Poor cast, average screenplay and dialogues, no characters devolpment except maybe the protagonist, mediocre but still ok visual effects. Still enough to entertain decently for 90 min.
Someone quoted Peppermint, which is exactly the same movie with a female protagonist instead. Just like Upgrade it grants that 90 min of fun. Both will be forgotten soon and definitely don't worth a second watch.
Peppermint is a gender swapped Punisher movie (and maybe even the best punisher movie).
Upgrade is more than a revenge movie and his wife getting killed was a means for the ends of the antagonist who was looking for him specifically. Narratively these are very different movies in the same action genre.
Calling the 2 the same movie is a gross misrepresentation.

Not even an American movie. It was filmed in Melbourne, Australia, by an Australian director, with an Aussie crew.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Yes, but it's still an american production (Blumhouse), the main protagonists are also american. I didn't want to portray in some negative way by calling it the same old american revenge movie, it's just one of the bazillion movies focussed on that matter that american cinema industry produces every year. There are actors like Steven Seagal who built an entire career by starring in that very same movie over and over again.

The punisher is another perfect example, also the same movie. Upgrade really doesn't have anything more, just a little sci-fi touch, but in the end it doesn't matter at all. This guy is upgraded, other protagonists like the punisher or Jennifer Garner are only "skilled" but they all fight and kill a lot of people by themselves, and they all are moved by getting revenge. None of the characters around them will be remembered. Of course they're not litterally the same movie but they really have a lot in common and both fall in the same category of B-movie actions.
