It's been a long time since I ventured outside of a GW product but after seeing the FFG release of Legions I thought I'd give it a bash so got the starter set and a few expansions for my Stormtrooper army.

This is a new game in general with a gradual release of models which is something new to me. The game mechanics are quite fun but the meta is still in flux in my mind as each new release can alter the balance, but I have an AT-ST so I am happy.

After opening the box up I was greeted by what I had expected, I wasn't thinking they'd be the greatest sculpts in the world but they give me a nice starting point. The stormtroopers for the most part look fine, they've fairly realistically proportioned but on the whole the faces are a bit too Team America for my liking. This isn't really a problem with the Stormtroopers because of the obvious reasons but it will mean a lot of work should I go back and do those as well. Don't get me wrong, on the whole they are quite nice models just not really my thing. I do like the Endor Rex inspired model though.

So with this in mind I set about hacking them up, re-positioning and generally playing around with new models that I am not familiar with. I am a big fan of the Clone Wars so decided to create a small platoon of experimental clones created in secret towards the end of the war that have basically been dumped on some back water outer rim dust ball and forgotten about.
The first thing I did was try my hand at digital sculpting which was really fun as it's something completely new and involved a lot of banging my head on a wall. Truth is that now I have the basics under my belt I confident I can make entire models like this quite easily which in itself is exciting.

The game works with an infantry squad such as Stormtroopers is you get a commander and three models, you can them upgrade with an additional trooper and one heavy weapons trooper giving a total of six models in a unit. The Commander is the one that all measuring and movement is based off so they tend to be the one that falls last. The models themselves are identical with one arm pointing and the other holding a blaster. With a bit of slicing and dicing I've made my own commanders to make them look a little more unique.

This is the first unit I am working on. They are very WIP at the moment but are getting there, once I have cleaned them up and blended the white and weathering they will hopefully look a lot nicer and more uniform. The orange pauldron trooper with the bare head is the Captain TK-3831, also known as 'Top' by his brothers, but due to orange denoting a commander or captain I'm adding a guy with a white pauldron as a sergeant to show it's a command squad.
To explain why Top has removed his helm in battle I'm working on blaster damage on the side of the helmet and will add some injuries to his left eye so it looks like he took a glancing hit and threw it to the ground out of frustration and lack of visibility.

An army in Legion is 800 points and my early understanding is that the more troops you have the better. So far I have six stormtrooper squads lined up to go, an AT-ST, a General Veers commander model along with some speeder bikes. So far Imperials also have Scout Troopers and a gun turret on the way and currently you can get Snowtrooper units but the release schedule feels very slow when compared to the likes of a company like GW. It is a little frustrating in that respect as I'd love to see the likes of Imperial Army like the Muddtroopers or Shoretroopers or Deathtroopers.
There are a few workarounds depending on your interpretation of what you consider canon to spice things up. for example to help distinguish units such as painting them red as Magmatroopers or black as Shadowtroopers.
