The new "Ork codex is coming" pre-order announcement ended with... Sly Marbo.

That reminds me of the time when GW announced three Xenos codecii in a row (for the first time since the start of 8th); only to end it with "Look at this cool Imperial Knight!".

Does Sly Marbo even count? It's a re-release of a model that could be bought earlier in the year that doesn't even have matched play rules. It is kind of awkward timing though even then Speed Freaks came out with no Imperial compensation.

He is 65pts, how is he not match play worthy? If you have a datasheet and points it can be played.

I thought the first time they released him they specifically said he wasn't legal for matched play because he's a limited release model that the majority of players won't even have access to. I could be making that up?

Sly probably only got rolled in because of the Ork head on his base to be honest.

And Speed Freeks didn't have any Imperial releases IIRC.

You mean the severed ork head his boot is stomping on? Yep, gotta remind these filthy xenos of their place, right?

I think he was either £15 or £20, off the top of my head.

It may be a running joke, but after some quick searching on the Warhammer Community site, it doesn't seem to be true - unless Tyranids and Death Guard count-as Imperium now anyway. It just seems pretty common to tease the next thing in line when releasing the current thing.

I mean, they're not imperium but I don't know if I'd count Death Guard as Xenos either...

I don't know the sole fact that custodes exist, makes a GK model update less likely. Plus there is production problems too. No idea about w40k, but from what I have been told some WFB armies wtih plastic model lines got cut, because GW couldn't fit them in to their production schedule.

Aren't the ad mecha an autonomous entity and joined wtih the imperium of man, by a lose pact and the God Emperor? that would make the ad mecha/necron box a imperial less release.

No what I'm saying is if you are getting stuff anyway, the fact someone else also got something doesn't take away from that.

There's really a more interesting trend at play here, which is that Orktober is really the first time in 8th edition a new model replaced an older one. It's also the first models for a classic army, with the major exception of the primaris.

To my recollection, the 8th edition model releases have been:
SM: Primaris (and lots of it)
CSM: Nothing
DG: Large range
TS: large range
GK: Nothing
IG: Sly Marbo
Tau: Nothing
Admech: Nothing
Necrons: Cryptek
Eldar: Nothing (but see harlies)
Harlies: Webway gate
DE: Nothing
Custodes: Bikes, Wardens, Termies, Special Character
Tyranids: Nothing
IK: Castellan, baby knights, Rex
DW: nothing
DA/BA/SW: Primaris upgrade sprue each
Orks: Buggies

I'm sure I'm missing stuff, but most armies received little or no new models. Nearly all new kits have been imperial or Chaos, with the bulk being Primaris, Death Guard, Tzeentch, Custodes, or Knights.

To be complete, Eldar got a new sculpt in Wake The Dead and GSC got some new stuff in Tooth and Claw.

Also, Thousand Sons stuff all came out under 7e.

I think the only significant Xenos release this year was Deathwatch. Oh wait, that's just Imperium that kills Xenos, we're all good here then.

They/them

It's becoming increasing clear that GW is not going to refresh or recut existing kits and seems reluctant to add models to existing ranges . Look at most the 8th edition releases, they are either entirely new ranges or mono pose character clam packs. Orks getting a bunch of new kits is actually a nice change of pace.

You must do a lot of yoga cause that's a big stretch

Deathwatch literally just had Primaris rolled into it which came out the previous year, ergo orks had way more than Deathwatch

If there was one imperial model I wanted at the same time as an ork release, it's Sly Marbo.

Well, I guess Yarrik would be more awesome, but Marbo is fine too. I fondly remember a game when he ran 30 gretchin off the board by throwing a demo charge in his own face.

And everybody should be happy - it could have been another primaris lieutenant

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.
