Can someone give me an idiots step by step guide with the colors I should be using to paint in the checks on my Goff orks?

I have the technique for painting them but the base and layer paints that work best for the effect have me at a bit of a standstill.

Any help would be appreciated.

Like the white and black checker paint?

Paint a white base coat (if you are painting on a black basecoat then some light brown first and then white on top). Then take a fine brush and make a "Tic-Tac-Toe" pattern of lines. Then fill in every other square as solid black.

Now if you are concerned about the steadiness of your hands to do this...remember Ork paint jobs are not perfect.

Hope that helps,

CB

Biggest tip I've got for checkers:
Do the grid, then paint t the squares from the inside to the edges. Pushing paint up to the line is way easier than trying to follow the line with a brush. Hope that was clear. Good luck!

I've used a paint brush to paint a black grid on an off-white base and fill in the checkers, but my brush control is not good enough to paint lines of equal width. Which is why the next time I'm doing it I'll use a sharp pencil to lightly trace the grid and carefully fill in the checker pattern.

Goff checkers (and other markings) are usually black and white, though using red instead of white could also work well. For the black and white markings I start with the white, as it requires multiple thin layers to achieve a smooth finish. I first do Celestra Grey, with thinned down paint and 2-3 coats. Make sure each layer is dry before painting the next. Hairdryer helps here. Next do Ulthuan Grey, even more thinned down than Celestra. 3-4 layers should be enough. If you want to highlight, use White Scar.

Then I do the black markings using watered down Abaddon Black. Make sure that the paint flows well, and it's good if it's more grey than black, in case of mistakes. Paint a grid, or zig zag pattern and fill every other square, triangle. Do a second coat to achieve good coverage. For highlighting, use Ushin Grey, or alternatively some metallic paint to imply that the paint has chipped off corners (both white and black).
