Hi there,
I have been wondering for years if I wanted to do matching bases for my armies. I have an inquisition project ongoing, and an Imperial Guard army almost finished. My IG and SM armies aren't matching (one is snowy, the other muddy). With the arrival of Necromunda, My Inquisition force uses Necro bases, so eventually, I avoided this issue and didn't had to think about matching bases for them (either snowy or muddy).
However, now I am doing my second and third gang, I am wondering again: should I paint all my Necromunda bases the same, in order to keep a sense of unifomity, especially when playing, or should I just go with what is best with each gang ?
How do YOU do ?
And how would you paint a necromunda base for a mainly white model (I painted my Van Saar like Cerberus soldiers from ME3, black, white and yellow stripes). I avoided metallic paints on the model and I don't know if that would break it to put some on the base (my Goliath gangers have metallic painted bases, with rust and all).

It's totally personal preference.

All of my armies (Salamanders, Deathwatch, Biel-Tan) are based the same - a sort of arid steppe/scrub sort of thing with light/dry earth and the occasional tuft. For the Imperial armies it means that I could soup them and the bases match. I've done the Eldar the same as the Imperials because I created the basing scheme with the Eldar somewhat in mind even though I used it on the Imperials first, and I have a vague plan in my head to make a scultpted gameboard that matches the basing scheme of my armies - so in that sense it makes sense for my armies to match this hypothetical future board.

I wouldn't be opposed to doing a different basing scheme for an army if I thought it would be cool though.

Creating a basing scheme from scratch for a fairly white model, I'm not sure exactly what I would do but I would lean towards something dark to provide contrast. Perhaps an asphalt sort of thing for Necromunda?

I generally try to base my armies so that they stand out from the base, though I often default to a dark brown base which works for that.

I have an army, am working on another and planning yet another. All will have the same dark-grey/grey bases 'cause really they're all part of one army and they have to match the game-board I'm planning too. My Escher have the Necromunda urban bases painted as bare metal, because they'll never meet my soup or my game-board.

Which is a longwinded way to say that really it depends on how your minis interact and your level of nitpickiness.

Most of my armies have the same rim color(steel legion drab), with the exception of my dark eldar(eshin grey).

When I started in 40k, my tau was in desert/wasteland, my guard are mostly that too, with exception of catachan(jungle), vostroyan(urban), upcoming valhallan(tundra); my drak eldar space deck urban base didn't look right with steel legion drab rims, so I switched to eshin grey; my orks have a moon rock scheme in mind.

My suggestion is to keep the faction's rim color the same, so that on the battlefield they look cohesive despite their basing differences; keeping the basing similar will help too, easiest are anything remotely related to urban.

My main two 40K armies use the same base, but I use different grass tufts on them...the Chaos Renegades having a kind of black (rotting) grass tuft because they're Nurgle marked.

I think probably the best way to base your miniatures across a number of armies/gangs and colour schemes would be to choose a neutral colour that contrasts well with everything.

I'm currently painting up my harlequins (each with a different colour) for a Kill Team and am planning on basing in a moon style grey rocky colour for exactly the above reason.

A Mars-stlye reddy brown is typically a good choice too, and also that grey-brown GW seem to use on all their box and website schemes. They must use it on every miniature for a reason...

My 'evil' armies (chaos, dark eldar, necrons) were on black/grey/ash waste type whereas the 'good guys' (marines, guard) are on brown/field.

It's really personal preference, I know some people do all bases the same, others do them radically different - almost as if the base is a important a component as the rest of the colour scheme.

I do the same neutral brown for 40K, Necromunda, etc. If the surface of the base has some special detail I will paint that differently, but the edges are all a Bestial Brown. Only thing I change is the static grass that colour I tweak with mixing different shades depending on the army.

Cheers,

CB
