Played the Rome total war games - they bored the heck out of me. Music seemed decent enough though.

Oh man, that's a tough one to pick. So many brilliant ones to pick from.
Near the top of the list would be Dragon Age, both Inon Zur's work on the first two and Trevor Morris's stuff for Inquisition. Very different styles across each game, but they all compliment the tone of the setting and the feel of the game so well. Origins is bleak and haunting, Inquisition is soaring and grandiose, and every land and faction and character have themes that suit them perfectly.
More recently, Spider-Man on the PS4 has an exceptional score, and one that makes absolutely brilliant use of a single theme rearranged. Take the Spidey theme, make it quieter and a bit more subtle and you have the track for the Peter Parker sections. Throw in some Minor Key elements and it's the soundtrack to tragedy. Elevate it and it's the backing for a grand and epic boss fight... It does a great deal with a single sequence, without ever feeling repetitive. It's at its absolute best when just traversing the world though. I don't quite know how it works, but there's something in there that makes it rise the moment you start swinging, hitting a crescendo when you pick up speed, ebbing away when you stand still before picking up again the moment you move on. It's genius.

Final Fantasy Tactics. Easily my favourite game and soundtrack:

Very easy choice for me, it would be The Witcher 3.
Although, to be fair, even after all these years I can still hear the Baldur's Gate II music in my head.

One chants out between two worlds: Fire, walk with me." - Twin Peaks
"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks
Personally I really like the soundtrack from Metroid Prime, particularly this one:

Lots of good ones so far. Some of my favorites being FFT, The Witcher 3, and Nier: Automata. If you didn't like those games at all, at least give the soundtracks a listen. They are great.
I know I have linked it in other threads but Bastion has an amazing soundtrack.
I don't play much Minecraft but I love the soundtrack. Pretty amazing stuff. Great to just throw on when playing games or doing other things.
Not a single person picked Chaos Gate? Really? I'm SO disappointed.
My list would contain Chaos Gate, Final Fantasy Vi, Skyrim, Star Trek Encounters, Robotech: Battlecry, Transformers: Devastation, Transformers: Call of the Future (or Tatakai, if you're a weeb. Doubly so if mispronounced and the rest of your sentence is in perfect English), Megaman X, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. The Crash Bandicoot series has quite a few good individual songs, but I wouldn't say the tracks are wholly good.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Holy Hannah, I almost forgot the original Contra. I can't believe it...

Streets of Rage 2 is probably the pinnacle of gaming music.
Most honourable mentions to:
Morrowind / Skyrim (Jeremy Soule FTW)
Zelda link to the past (such atmosphere)
World of Warcraft vanilla (westfall, tanaris xxx)
Mario Kart 64 (the end game credits piece 0_o )
Street fighter 2 (who dosent remember guiles/kens level)

In my experience one of the greatest strengths of the Legend of Zelda series is the invariably amazing soundtracks; one of the reasons I didn't like Breath of the Wild as much as some of the other games was the fact that it's too quiet. Koji Kondo is a musical genius.
For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.
Best part about this thread is it gives me lots of great ideas for games to pick up. ESP old games. I love old games.

Bastion's Soundtrack gets the most play... prior to that was a lot of Mass Effect 1... The Halo Series (or rather 1-4 and Halo Wars) and the World of Warcraft (Vanilla through Warlord ...mostly because I haven't opened Legion's soundtrack).
Guilty Gear stuff gets fair rotation...
Years ago it would have been Final Fantasy VII then a LOT of Final Fantasy VIII... Though 4 and 6 have some dope tunes.
The Orange Box Soundtrack has a whole bunch of great stuff even besides the "Still Alive" Tracks.
Final Fantasy XI, though i never did play it much, always had some great music that felt kind of inspiring.
Oh I love the Eve soundtrack... as well as Phantasy Star Online's soundtrack... both are great for spacy moods
