I like the look of the citadel woods and can see filling a table with them but the price kinda puts that out of the question. Have you guys seen anything similar?

its going to be tough getting any cheaper than the GW ones. at least in that sort of style.

You can get Hobby scale trees online. like 70 of them for 15 dollars but you will need to check the scale. its also chinesium so you get what you pay for.

get some MDF make bases and glue those on.

IF you are truly destitute you could run around collecting branchs or if located close enough, go out to your nearest desert and collect some saltbush or other dry and dead shrubbery and make a ton of burnt or dead tree forest terrain. or buy some flock to flock em up.

Simple.

This:
https://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/TreeArmatures

And stick on this: (no glue needed)
https://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/item/L167

Basically armatures with lichen (leave it unglued so you can remove it, swap it, replace it, etc.)

You end up with: (a small portion of the trees I currently have)

Thanks des... its not totally about the money, i just find i don't like fiddling with diy stuff anymore.

Thanks too elbows... I've actually heard of this but never seen it done. I've been tempted to pic up some of their armatures and leaving them bare as dead trees =P
Im just afraid of getting the wrong size and wasting money.
What size did you use, do you recall?

The ones in my pics are currently the medium ones (3"-5"), but they show the size on the page. I picked up some of the larger 5-7" ones but I haven't assembles them yet. You get 10-15-20 per bag depending on the size and they're generally available on eBay, Amazon, etc.

You get them, clip some sprue off, bend them around (they're bendable plastic of some sort)...toss them on whatever base you want, and spray em or drybrush em with grey/brown, etc. The lichen makes for simple trees and you just stick it into the twisted branches, or - take it off when the season changes, etc.

It's about the only "cheap" way to make a bunch of trees. China has been stepping up their cheap model game stuff, so you may find some assembled trees on eBay. Generally in the US assembled and flocked trees are pricey as hell compared to making them yourself. Using lichen instead of the flock/clump foliage is 10x easier/faster and you don't have to glue anything.

usernamesareannoying,

Like Elbows suggested...I used larger coniferous trees...I cut off the tops and some of the branches and painted them as burnt forest.

You can compare them with the GW ones in this shot.

The plastic trees have plug in bases, so you mount those on your terrain and when something large has to move into the area you can "fell" the tree.

Hope that helps,

CB

I actually much prefer your homemade ones, Capt.

Yeah I'll second Gordon's opinion. There's nothing wrong with using real bits of tree for trees, just a good idea to dry them and seal them before painting.

Hiding behind terrain

If you are after a haunted or alien look you could try cholla wood.

I stumbled over a thread about it in the painting tutorials recently and thought it looked pretty cool.

Wow dropbear, that's really neat and looks great the way he painted it. Thanks for the link.

It's cheap too.
