Let's pretend that GW has hired you to come up with the next Box Bundle. You must determine the following:

A. What two factions are facing each other? (Rule: The factions must NOT share a color. For example, you cannot pit Blood Angels versus Khorne Daemons because both are Red)

B. What generic Character model (ex: Space Marine Chapter Master, but not Kayvaan Shrike) gets a model? Choose one for each side.

C. What troop unit accompanies each faction?

D. What two other units are bundled into the box for each faction?

Here's mine...

A. Night Lords vs. Astra Militarum - I love the idea that the Astra Militarum would be defending themselves desperately against the terror troops of the Night Lords. The concept is just super cool! The khaki and camo green of the Astra Militarum versus the terrifying blue and red of the Night Lords would be really neat.

B. Of course, you can't go Night Lords without a Raptor Chaos Lord. Let's forego the Lightning Claw and instead have a Chainfist. Something that's going to hurt, make a lot of blood spray, and be terrifying to behold. In his other hand, a plasma pistol, because of course. On the Astra Militarum side, a brave Ministorum Priest, desperately trying to will his men to new heights of valor against this terrifying foe. Classic Chainsword and Bolt Pistol, or maybe some sort of Hand Flamer would be really neat.

C. For troops, it's pretty obvious. Chaos Marines on one side, Platoon on the other.

D. For the other units, let's throw the classic Raptors on the Night Lords side and have them supported by a super scary Venom Crawler! Then, on the Astra Militarum side, a Chimera to transport the troops and a Heavy Weapons Team, giving the feeling that these troops are desperately entrenched against a foe they don't want to be entrenched with.

I'd call it... Fear and Faith.

Oh yessssssss

The classic match up, of course, Craftworlds vs Necrons

Bonesinger and ....well, the necron choices suck.... so an overlord?

Avengers vs Warriors(scarbs)

I would have to playtest to choose the other units, since boxsets are many peoples way into the hobby, it would have to play fair, and each army would have to have a little synergy. If you forced me at gunpoint to tell you right now, without looking at points or really anything, I would say (All plastic) scorpions, two support weapons, some flayed ones and deathmarks.

It doesn't matter if you're not dominating the game; if you have 3-4 x as many models and options than the rest of us and you're still getting new kits, we're still gonna rip on the faction. I think one with Imperial Guard and Tau would be really neat for box set model opportunities.

I think a unique commissar/command squad and a unique Commander would be cool.

Guardsmen and heavy weapons teams plus some Sentinels would be fitting. Firewarriors, Crisis Suits, and Pathfinders + drones for the classic combo. Kind of like two recon/forward units happening to run into each other.

Something that continues to surprise me is how generic box sets are in the game. Setting aside that totally works for introductory sets, I feel like there's an untapped market for more inventive ones among experienced players (and my desire for more affordable models plays no role in this opinion *whistles*)

I general don't dream about w40k, but if I would, A started box with two totaly new amies would be the best thing. When an existing army is put in to starter box, one part of it is always better or more useful, and the rest is balast. Two totaly new factions would fix that problem, as there would be no cross over units, no old stock of models that are better way to get stuff, or dead weight models that never get used.

So something like space dwarfs vs space reptiles, consider all other armies in w40k already exist.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

For me it'll be some new Sisters VS some new Renegades & Heretics

The sisters would be all lovely new models, a great way to kick start a collection!

They would have to have a heroic Canoness leading the charge, holy blade held aloft.

There would be 10 Battle sisters, you could field them as a squad of ten or two of five. Add it a couple of flamers for burning the enemy chaff.

A squad of Seraphim with some melta pistols for chasing down enemy armour.

Something new that we haven't seen before, perhaps a small scout vehicle (think landspeeder) armed with demoralising loudhailers.

Opposing these Ladies would be the ragtag band of Chaos worshipping renegades, most of this could be made up of models from blackstone to be honest.

I'm thinking the new fallen commisar and his mutated ogryn bodyguard would be a great fit to lead the force.

Three squads of 7 renegade militia to fill out the horde.

A couple of Rogue Psykers for the sisters to hunt.

A giant mutated beast of some sort, perhaps an amalgam or various people and creatures smashed together and horrific, needs to be a nasty threat and really sell that the whole army have fallen to chaos.

Call it "The Faithful and The Faithless"

I would snap this up an GW would have me collecting two new armies :-)

Imperial Guard versus Genstealer Cult.

The imperial guard would have to contain the plague that has spread like fire amongst its rank and its planet, the IG fort waging war in their barracks ans trying to regain the planet inch after inch.

I would give a model to the imperial guard colonel commmanding the stationned regiment and to either a jackus trying to chase him or to a psycher twisting the guards' will.

The models should be playtested to release a fair bundle, but but I'd like the IG to be somewhat defensive, heavily armed, and the Genestealer to be numerous and mobile, topping at some 750 points a side maybe?

Obviously the box would come up with a detailed campaign and its missions.

I'd label the box: Uprising.

Also what about a Stalk tank?

I think any strater box that is not marines vs X would be allready an improvement.

Nothing against the marine content in the boxes but i think 2 xenos or other armies would be an improvement overall.

Craftworld Eldar vs either Tyranids

Eldar:

Tyranids:
- Tyranid Prime
- 3 Warriors

Both armies get new plastics for a character and an elite choice, the armies are fairly well balanced (with the nominal good guys having a slight edge, at least in points) and you can probably cram it all onto two or three sprues total.

Militarum Tempestus versus Harlequins!

A Taurox Prime or two, a few squads of Scions, a Tempestor Prime and Command squad. If I was forced to make a new character, it would be some kind of drill abbot. Otherwise I’d throw in a unique Lord Commissar model.

Harlequin troopes, their open-topped transport, some new character because I’ve heard they need them.

I just like the idea of the best shooters of regular humanity versus the best melee of the Eldar.

(Harlequins are the best Eldar melee, right?)

C) Asuryani - Guardians. Drukhari - Wyches

D) Asuryani - Wraithguard/Wraithblades and a Wave Serpent. Drukhari - Reavers and Raider

Not only are these two interesting armies, but they can also be combined to make one large army so that a given player can use both parts of the box set. Also, good jumping on point for Ynnari if you wanted to go that route.

Mine would be Admech VS Dark Mechanicum
On the Admech side, it would be a new model of the Tech-Priest Mah-Te-Lo from the book Gods of Mars, who would be a melee beatstick HQ with a buff aura for melee (+1 S and +1 A).
A unit of skitarii with a better sprue that allows you to make 3 plasma guns, 3 arc rifles, or 3 arquebii.
A unit of the Heavy Skitarii that someone found in a sketch Sheet.
And the new transport.

For the Dark Mechanicus:

A unit of ten AI warriors as infantry
