I have the Mark 2 Chaos Space Marines codex and was idly leafing through it the other day looking at Abaddon's new profile and I can see he has the faction keywords for all 4 Chaos gods - so far, so good. However, nowhere in the codex can I find what the Chaos Gods faction keywords actually do.

Am I missing something? I assume whatever benefits the marks confer are already included in his profile but it would be nice to know what that benefit is, for example when deciding what mark to grant other troops.

Can anyone tell me where this info is detailed?

No innate benefits to a Keyword, but they are used for making Detachments, being affected by Psychic Powers/Stratagems etc.

OK, so it's not like previous versions then when granting a unit a mark of chaos actually had a demonstrable benefit?

If that is the case, then what is the point of the keywords, other than for force building? Doesn't that mean all chaos forces are all just vanilla?

For force building, Psychic powers, abilities and Stratagems. Your NURGLE psyker May only be able to affect NURGLE units, for instance.

In the case of Abaddon, having all four marks means he can use the god-specific stratagems like Fury of Khorne or Grandfather's Blessings. He can also be the target of Delightful Agonies, Miasma of Pestilence, Weaver of Fates, etc... and so on.

He can also be target of god-specific prayers. In general, being able to pick the best of all stratagems and buffs allows him to go toe to toe with Mortarion or Magnus and win - which fits his fluff nicely.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

I understand all that, many thanks. It just seems to me that Chaos has lost a little of it's flavour with the removal of the marks system but I guess that is the way the game is going in terms of streamlining.

Special rules, Stratagems and abilities provide the flavour. There’s lots to differentiate units still.

The things marks used to do have mostly moved to legion traits.

Yeahh no, not really and also a lot of customizability was lost with the shift.
Granted the legion traits are ok.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Mark of Khorne is World Eaters, Mark of Slanesh is Emperors Children. Mark of Tzeench is only available a All is Dust on TS signature, Mark of Nurgle has been rolled into all DG signature units.

You can still customize you army by putting them in appropriate detachments, but most Nurgle-CSM options have been squatted.
