Under the couch

So, while the most hated redesign thread is an interesting read, lets aim for some more positivity for a Monday morning (Stop grumbling, you people from the tail end of the world, it will be monday soon enough!)

What's your favourite redesigned model?

The standout for me, right now, would be the new greater daemons. While I'm not a fan of them being so large, the designs themselves are just amazing all around.

Runner up position would go for the Eldar Wraithlord. A wonderful re-imagining of what started out as a fairly goofy thing.

2nd runner up would be Space Marine Scouts. While there's a spot in my heart for the original puffy-sleeved version, the metal 3rd edition version release was a real wow moment.

Special mention goes to Dark Eldar Warriors. The original third edition release... those were horrible models even for the time. I love the current DE range... although ironically enough, my DE army is made up of the horrible versions.

So, what does it for you?

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I'd say a toss up for Wraithguard and Wraithlord (read: Eldar Dreadnought).

It's one of the best "smooth refining" updates. They're immediately identifiable, maintain most of the old key features and didn't get cranked to '11' as is so common (admittedly these are already 8-10 years old now?). The War Walker did not make a smooth transition and looks like ass by comparison.

Found this on Dakka:

The new Abaddon the dispoiler is absolutely gorgous, love it. Also the new CSMs are amazing, not perfect by any means but you can really see where GW has improved in regards to detailing looking at those bad boys

+1 for the new Abaddon. The old one was (and still is) great, but getting out of scale. The new one is wonderful ad dead easy paint up and convert. In fact, I have one to the right of me made into a Nurgle DP/Nurgled up Abaddon.

In a strange duality with one of my answers in the other thread- Typhus. The pose is just awful. An utter letdown and not in character at all. However, I got one as a gift and set about remedying that pose. Good lord is there a beautiful model under there.

The 3rd ed Ork redesign is up there for me. Brian Nelson is like a god for sculpting Orks and their redesign into their current form was wonderful to look at. That first Warboss (which is still available from GW) with the massive chain axe Choppa is still one of my favourite models even 20 years later.

Gotta agree with the Greater Daemons too, they are vastly oversized, but boy do they look good.

The new Chaos Marines imo.
Ok hear me out, they are simultaniously one of the worst and best.
Worst, because for your supposed standard mook they are to busy, to overflowing with Details.
Best, exactly that baroque feeling and their busyness.

Overall you need more time to paint them then the old ones but it's worth it imo.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

That's curious because I never took to the new Rhino at all. So much so that I ended up kit-bashing Rhino-Russes to replace them so I could avoid using them I didn't love the Deimos original stuff, but the newest Marine stuff looked stodgy to me for some reason.

The Greater Daemons might be my favorite redesigns. I only own one currently (the Bloodthirster), but they are all really amazing, and the large size helps to convey the fact that they are GREATER Daemons.

The new Abaddon looks amazing as well, and I hope to pick one up at some point. Indeed, I like pretty much all of the updated CSM stuff so far, including the Death Guard and Thousand Sons stuff. Yes, Typhus' pose could be better, but he's still pretty cool. If they give World Eaters and Emperor's Children the same treatment, I'll be very happy, as the current Berzerkers are stupid and there aren't even current Noise Marines, but rather just upgrade kits.

I also love the new Cypher, and the new Celestine. Both are great improvements on the previous versions.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

In my time of being in the hobby, (since mid 7th), it's probably going to have to be abbadon. His new model is just GORGEOUS, and it definitely does him justice.

I have seen the greater daemons redone too however (apart from the bloodthirster which I coincidentally have 2 of ). Before the new kits, greater daemons looked horrible. The new kits are simply beautiful. The step from keeper-newkeeper is incredible.

MOST OF THE THINGS!

I mean there's a long long list but a few to top it from me

1) The AT Warlord - hands down possibly the biggest jump, though granted its a night and day difference. From the old warlord into the brand new massive walking plastic monster of detail we have today!

2) Tyranids! I liked their 1st generation, but I disliked their first big rework when hive tyrants had mouths that were just all teeth and such - the current editions are fantastic models. Bigger and far more imposing

3) Keeper of Secrets - a graceful monster that towers over the lesser monsters and yet still keep much of the original charm of the model

4) Fiends of slaanesh - I always liked the last generation in metal and the new ones are really outstanding. Lithe and deadly looking with very active poses; whilst at the same time keeping that backward rear leg and elongated head.

5) The new dragons. I was never a big fan of the original GW serpentine dragons in metal; however the new High elf and Dark Elf dragon kits in plastic were really fantastic remakes. Keeping that serpent style body but bulking it out with all that plastic let them without being limited by the weight and price of metal.

6) Morathi - ok technically only half her kit is a rescupt, the other half is brand new. That said her new human style form is great, imposing and powerful stance backed with metallic style wings. A deadly looking sorceress of dark shadowy magics

7) Ikit Claw - the previous version as nothing special, but his current metal model is really one of my favourite models ever made by GW. I just love the look of him - I can't deny that he's one reason I want/am slowing building a skaven force.

Well looking at the older GUO models, i would say the current one is a major improvement in redesign, so ill just say that is my favourite, since thats all i know of really.

My vote also goes to the various Eldar Wraith units, just them being plastic rather than metal would get my vote even before the fantastic job they made of them.
New Epic scale knights are right up there though.

It's kind of a mixed bag for me. I don't necessarily like the Rhino kit or it's varients all that much and they're vastly out of scale, but at the same time they're faithful to the original model so if you have old ones you can keep using them without it looking really strange. I think they should have taken the opportunity to reimagine them as something a little less WWI (or even just make the base hull a tad bigger), but I can see why they didn't go that route.

I remember in high school desperately wanting a 5-man unit of Wraithguard, but even then they were around $12-15 per mini and I was spending most of the money from my part time job on food and gas...so the thought of $75 for five models was too much. Then the local retailer got screwed over by GW and decided to dump everything and cancel their GW contract and they sold off everything at 50% off. I got them just in time to go to college where it took me a year or two to get around to actually painting them.

Now, I have twenty in the beautiful plastics.
