As part of the Nova Terran Interregnum project I'm working on, I'm painting up some one-off aliens like these Saharduin (from the awesome Knightmare Models):

I've dug out some fairly odd bits and bobs, but wondered what cool 'civilised alien' models you know of. I say civilised aliens, because I'd like to emphasise the warfare between humans and aliens. It's fairly easy to find individual alien beasts; a bit harder to find cool alien models that look more organised.

Are we talking actual races mentioned in 40k with no models? Your own creations? Bit of both?

I've been following this series for a bit but I wanted to make sure. Anyway, I'll start with a bit of a shot in the dark with I-Kore/Urban Mammoth/Scotia Grendel (the current producers of the models) Void range. The Koralon and Syntha are both ripe for conversion (I used the Koralon Broodmaster minis to make my Rak'Gol) for either a parasitic alien race and their hybrids (perhaps stepping a little on GSC's toes, but still...) and something like Men of Iron or a high tech alien race. We also have the AoS endless spells, some of which are excellent for the Umbra.

Thanks Grimtuff – and in answer to your question; happy with anything. If there's a particular figure you think would make a great thyruss (or whatever), that's brill, but as long as it looks cool and isn't a completely different aesthetic, it's all good

Also – your Rak'Gol conversion are amazing! Would you be interested in showcasing them in a guest post on +DoaR+?

I've been thinking for many years too about what can make a good Thyruss after seeing them in Xenology. I've always thought the 5th ed. WHFB Flamers of Tzeentch would make a good base, though now I'm gonna search through the several Myconid minis that are available now to see if there's anything better.

I'll shoot you a PM about that. I'm in the UK (despite what the flag says) so you might just be up the road. They are kinda in desperate need of someone who can take better pics than me.

The upcoming AoW Planetfall video game from Triumph has hovering jelly fish with psi-talents and intelligent plant life. GW could tap into these factions too if they were not hellbent on releasing the xth Primaris Lt. or shiny Sigmarine.

The Battlestations/ Dirtside board games have some really weird aliens. Collections of bubbles, jellies, vines... not the usual things you see in games.

Mega Minis had all sorts of weird alien sculpts. The scales can be all over the place on them though.

Beyond the Gates of Antares has some pretty visually distinct races. Latest faction are crazy geometric pattern AI insect drone things. The Ghar are little monkey guys with giant crab- like three- legged battle suits. The Freeborn have a bunch of mutant rejects that are GW chaos spawn style models. Honestly the whole game is pretty distinct visually.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Watch and listen to me ramble about these minis before ruining them with paint!

Images (lo and behold):

Spoiler:

Starting from ugly ones:

AT-43 had quite cliche aliens, but rarely seen in tabletop:

Apes are fun also (i have them as part of my jokaero list)

Dropship horizon had ‘nids on drugs:

There are a lot of extravagant species developed, but it is non-trivial case to transfer ideas like gas-liforms, non-carbon organics, non-symmetric lifeforms, etc - into a viable model range.

Kingdom Death is currently closest conceptually I suppose.

How is Kingdom Death closest to Warhammer conceptually?

I'll shout out Maelstrom's Edge and Reaper Bones for having some great sci fi aliens avec technology.
