With the Codex Space Marines Mk2 coming up, that might put an end to major new space marine releases. Does that mean the current tacticus and gravis units are all there will be? Most of the recent space marine releases are geared towards phobos/vanguard units. It's a second wave of them after the Shadowspear line. But there hasn't been any new gravis or tacticus units (except suppressors) since the beginning of 8th. Will they receive similar multi-waved releases? Someone said there would be new gravis and tacticus units in a voxcast a while a go. It seems odd that they aren't alternating between the different armor types in these releases.

Assuming space marines will have more units, how will they be included? They could always release a Codex Space Marines Mk3 or include datasheets for future units in the MK2 codex, but it seems unlikely they would do that without accompanying models. The could also have a gravis and tacticus expansion as some middle ground, as unpopular as another book would be (you would need 3 books to play basic Ultramarines). But gravis and tacticus units got the better of the initial release, you can certainly make a functional army using only them, so there might not be new space marines for ~2 years.

EDIT: I should clarify that I don't mean special releases like Lieutenants or named characters, it seems like we get one of those every month. I'm talking about multiple man units and vehicles that can expect to see regular play.

I'm not sure it does. The new supplement style they're going for lends itself well to expanding the codex without needing a reprint. A Gravis supplement, or a Psychic awakening campaign supplement could easily tie in.

People have been complaining about needing too many books for a while. Separate chapter specific books are good to have, but having expansions for new units might be a step too far.

I kind of hope not. I want Space Marine players to continue to get content. My criticism of the Games Workshop release schedule is that it doesn't really give everyone something to look forward to, or new toys/rule to play with. I want everyone to have something new and cool to play with, and to play their armies on the tabletop with reasonable success. Currently, the game isn't in that state, and I don't have much faith that it will either.

If they put check points in the release schedules, that would be awesome.

You no longer need the last 50 books, starting on THIS codex. Everything before THIS codex is INVALID. That would be a start. But they can't do that for obvious reasons.

Instead, they just keep adding to the pile you legally need to bring to reference anything that is used in your army. Let's see now, if you play a mixed Space marine army, both old and new, with a sub faction race, that it what, 2 more books to the 19 already?

If I've learned something from GW it's that there's never an end to Space Marine releases, even if they're becoming as unnecessary as Centurions or a whole second new Marine army on top of the existing marine army that already has the newest models.

Marines are the army that always gets new content - all the time.

Plus the Forgeworld releases.....

if anything they can now release more SM over a longer duration for all the chapters.

I'm sure they'll find new and exciting ways to add new guns/bling/heads to their Primaris marines in increasingly redundant and ridiculous ways. Though I do look forward to a Primaris flyer and dedicated tank.

GW I suppose can pout out a new codex whenever they feel like, but obviously if they release a new marine codex again in say december it's going to see backlash. so this'll be the end of large scale space marine releases, HOWEVER it's unlikely to be the last we see of space Marines. as GW won't see an issue with putting out the odd unit sans codex (the admech transport for example)

we'll also likely see a new release with each supplement, a primaris character.

Imperial Fists have, (thanks to their sucessors being so prominant) a pretty large number of characters that could make the change. if GW was of a mind to they could make a fair sized release out of black templars characters alone.

my guess is we'll see a plastic primaris shrike, the iron hands char, vulcan hestan, and then, being optimistic here a plastic lysander, pedro and one of the black templars.

I'm just thinking GW'll wanna give some primaris love to each of the dornite chapters with chars.

that'll proably be it for space marine releases until gravis.

although I expect we'll also see updated characters for the snowflake chapters too

There is a critical mass of releases you can do per release window.

They've hit it. More kits will come out down the line.

Agreed. People often seem to get a bit carried away in their estimation of how much stuff will be released in a given year.

Look at the Primarchs, everyone expecting them to get fired out. It's what, something like 2 years since the last one now?

I really hope so.

I hope these supplements come out with upgrade packs and a character, all the bells and whistles then after the last one nothing for a year I hope lol

It's bad enough I want that khan model and I don't play white scars!

So do you all think we won't see new gravis and tacticus units in the near future (~18 months) and the only marine releases will be named characters and chapter specific units? During that time they will probably fill out the chapter supplements, but what then? Will gravis and tacticus get a 3rd Codex Space Marines?

if we get gravis in about 2 years time by then chances are good GW'll be moving to a new edition, so we'll likely see gravis introduced then

Oh my dear no. We'll have primaris lieutenants for every major release from now until 40k becomes unprofitable. You can't expect them to do any sort of event or big release without marines present.

I'm reminded of a quote from Plato, " Only the dead have seen the end of war. " I believe that is all correct.

So I have to say, only those who turn away from 40k will have seen the last of space marines for anything over a couple weeks. They have primaris characters to sell, rules to bloat and wallets to raid. If you don't love some kind of marine, I'd flee while you still can.

Here, only the insane prosper and only those who prosper may judge what is sane.

Warmachine figured this out, they put 4-6 releases for every faction into every new release book right from the start. I'd say GW couldn't do that on the sheer number of factions they have, but then I count the number of releases in the original Marine codex.

GW could do that and people would still complain.

"this month everyone gets a new HQ choice"

"THEY PUT OUT MORE THEN 1 SPACE MARINE HOW DARE GW"

"...... err no they just put out a Blood angels, space wovles etc HQ"

"I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE SPACE MARINE ARMIES AND THAT OCCASIONALLY PEOPLE WHO PLAY THEM MIGHT LIKE SOMETHING TOO"

I mean seriously when you stop and think of it a Primaris Release is something for 3 or 4 seperate codices

They might be complaining about that, but they wouldn't be complaining about codex creep. I'd call that a fair trade.

I imagine so. Otherwise they're going to have to release yet more publications to cover new models, and if they do that, I think BaconCatBug might have an aneurysm. All of which is hugely disappointing, as it means that the Primaris range doesn't look set to receive any of the following any time soon: jump pack melee assault troops; bikes; a basic 10 man dedicated transport that's not bristling with guns; heavy support troops with multiple weapon options. This greatly sours the Primaris range for me, and it's doubtful that I'll invest in any of it, which is unfortunate, because I really do love the look of Intercessors and Redemptors. Luckily for Games-Workshop, I stilll have a ton of old marine purchases I need to make, and even when those are finished, the near universal beauty of the Genestealers range has me hearing the sweet whispers of the Many Armed Emperor.

That's what I hate the most about primaris, they don't feel like a complete army. It's like they took a few cool units that might be good in limited circumstances and hoped they would become a full army unto themselves. Half of primaris heavy support troops are in the form of fast moving flying units while their only melee options are left foot slog unless they get in an MBT pretending to be a transport. I could give more examples, but the fact that the new light transport is trying to be some kind of command support vehicle instead of a transport irked me more than it should have.

I get that they had some idea about mixing normal and primaris marines into one army, but the differences between the models is so great that I can't bring myself to do it. Primaris marines are the size of custodes while normal marines are the size of unaugmented humans. If normal marines got updated like CSM, maybe I could mix them.
