I'm a big fan of terrain, and especially fortifications. GW makes/made a pretty extensive range of various bunkers, bastions and big turrets and I'm wondering if any of them are actually worth taking in 8th?
I've got a Chaos list that may see some use this coming Monday and it has a Noctilith Crown just 'cause its cool (and its rules would seem to fit with an Alpha Legion gunline), but does anyone ever bring Bastions? Turrets? That big bunker with the macro-cannon thingy?

I have to admit that throughout 8th edition I never gave this a lot of thought - then I turned my head and saw ALL of the terrain I've bought over the years from GW just collecting dust...are all of them truly junk!?

Better question would be, why not put them on the table as part of the mission setup and allow players to use them so you get to use them as well as your nice army men

The new rules for fortifications from chapter approved made them much better, being able to give units inside that can shoot out the ability to be affected by aura abilities helps a lot. The biggest issue becomes deploying some of them following the general rules. Sometimes where you want to put them you cant because of terrain features.

Would you care to explain how units inside fortifications can be affected by aura abilities ?

The rules on the fortifications got updated to allow it. It specifically says on a lot of imperial ones.
Example : imperial bastion
Fire Points: Up to 10 models embarked aboard this model can shoot in your Shooting phase, measuring
distances and drawing line of sight from any point on this model. When they do so, any restrictions and
modifiers that apply to this model also apply to its embarked models.
I read that last line to mean auras effect them as well as negatives to hit from abilities or spells and the like. That's how my group has understood it anyways. If that's wrong I apologize for the mistake / misinformation.

What aura abilities could affect an UNALIGNED unit ?? I don't know any. You are right about negatives to hit from abilities, if those would affect the fortification it would affect the embarked units as well.

I could have swore I saw some that affected all friendly units within, but I may be thinking of older rules / loadouts than current ones. My mistake about that part.

Noctilith Crown has legs for some chaos builds now, and is only 80pts. Automatically Appended Next Post: I tried running a bastion with centurions, before the SM redux, and it was pretty useful, if a little stiff for deployment. When it went off, the cents inside were well protected, and disembark on 50mm bases gives them a 1st turn move of about 9". I'll be honest, though, it was kinda more about IF fluff than anything else

Eh that's standard text same like in ork vehicles. Aura is not modifier. You don't get it anymore than orks get aura inside battlewagon. Now if aura gives plus to hit to transport that transfers

Fortications are a faction, they have the UNALIGNED keyword. An aura ability which gives +1 to hit is a modifier. The aura ability would need to affect UNALIGNED units. Do you know any unit from a different faction who can do that ?

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH. |

The fortification rules are pretty poor. They are great looking scenery but the points values and rules are poor, it was one of the big disappointments in CA19 for me as I am a sucker for scenery and have bought most of it!
Bunkers are only 80 points and have decent toughness protecting models which can fire out. Kind of comparable to a Rhino but immobile, one or two might work.
Noctilith Crown seems useable as well.
If anyone can think of any circumstances in which you might want to bring Wall of Martyrs trenches I would love to hear it.
Bonus point for the T'au fortifications.

Bunkers are 100 pts., and LOS is pretty limited because they are low the ground.

You're absolutely right, for some reason I thought they'd got a bit of a boost in CA19 but I must have looked at the wrong line! Knew I should've checked before I said it.
Oh well, they weren't a great idea at 80pts and they are even worse at 100 pts.
