So Ive put some pennies on the bottom of my specter bases as they are some wobbly AF models lol. In hindsight should have gotten some fishing lead...
However, I now realize I will have to put magnets on the bottom and make a magnetic case as they will disintegrate in conventional carrying solutions aka foam trays/boxes.

So, I need to drill into the coins I have stuck on as there is no gap for the magnets..
I'm thinking of using 5 by 0.5 s. Should be sufficient?

Can anyone recommend decent drill bit? The drills I have are cheap ones and only good for plastic.

Why not take the coins off, and use larger magnets as counterweights. Less work, and more efficient.

Well, you see that's the very first thing I tried but they are stuck really good. They aint coming off without a LOT of brute force lol... I already finished basing and building and these are fragile AF. Dont want to brute force them.. FW resin kits.. expensive

But you're going to drill through the base? Alternatively, mount the magnets in your case, then stick some thin steel washers onto the coins already in place.

No, I only need to go though like 1MM of the coin. I was planing on going at it by hand if possible

I suppose the second solution is to get bigger magnets and attach metal to the bases and do it the other way round. Didn't think of that.

I used pennies, which are no longer legal tender in Canada and just used a pin vice as the metal is actually quite soft.

Hope that helps,

Yeah thats what im planing but the drill set I have is cheap chinese stuff. I wasted 2 drills trying to do a couple holes to pin my AOK so these arent going through pennies.

Therefore looking for a good source for some small drills that are good vs merals. (cheaper the better lol)

Hi, I would recommend HSS twist drills. looking on amazon both dewalt and bosch do a set of them for about £12.

But I wouldn't try to do them by hand it will take you forever, you may just have to redo a patch of the basing and use an electric drill.

Thanks I will check them out.

I do have a mini dremel so could use the small drills to make a nice sized pilot and the rest by hand.

Yeah. Magnetize the steel sheet you will be attaching them to. Then the models just need a lil bit of metal and they will click right on.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

The cheap Chinese stuff is perfectly capable, in terms of the material they're made from; the problem is usually the grind. The geometry on some of the bits I've gotten was shockingly bad. Sharp flutes, but when you get to the tip - the part that actually does the work - the cutting edges were ground the wrong way.

Anything from a brand name you're likely to find in a hardware/big box store is still made in China from decent (but not great) materials, but likely has much more precise grinding and better quality control. You have to pay for that, but it's still nothing compared to the prices for professional/industrial quality stuff. I've used regular HSS twist bits for years to drill mild steel, so coins are no challenge. Just keep the speed and pressure moderate if you want to preserve the cutting edges - slapping them in a Dremel is just asking for trouble. If drilling by hand, that's obviously not an issue.

I've never tried anything like this but my first thought would be to not 'drill' it. Get a dremel tool and use an abrasive bit - some kind of ball gouge? - and remove material that way.

check the pennies, they may be steel cored and if they are just get some magnetic rubberised sheet in a box?

I've got a stack of 28mm models for various games when metal bases (mix of 1p and 2p coins mostly) and rubber magnetic sheet in cases and movement trays

way cheaper than buying magnets and cheaper that steel discs for the bases

I got some metal drills from halfords and got a Dremel ready.

However before I risk completely messing up my brand new models, Any tips for locally dissolving superglue? It was in Gel form if that makes difference.

Right this is really really embarrassing..

Turns out 1P coins are magnetic AF.. I just assumed they were made from a non-ferous metal for some reason..

Too bad I didn't check before going out and buying some metalworking drills from halfords

I hope they will accept a return for those and the bur set I got as well(which doesnt fit my dremel ) lol..

So much fail..
