Ah, seems my problem is that I didn't understand. I was genuinely not aware of that.

Because of the layout of the building, all of the mecahnisms need to be underneath a wall or underneath the floor, or I would use that furnace system in a flash.

Note this does not include any required redstone, you may need to have a thicker floor or other ways of concealing redstone.

Dark's system seems to work the best so far. I jsut need a way to link it via redstone. Perhaps a lever on the wall behind the pillar then an xor gate underneath to have another lever to close it?

I haven't been on simply because of a rather nasty virus.

If you guys get a popup from Win 7 Security 2012, DO NOT CLICK IT. It's Scareware, so you can safely hit the 'x' button in the corner, but don't buy it, or update it, or whatever else it wants you to do.

Best way to get away from it is to do a system reset, but it sticks around and makes everything terrible, and about the only way I found to get properly rid of it was a full system wipe and reset.

Didn't know furnaces worked like that, might mess around with them a bit.

There's been a problem with the Dakka MC server whitelist (it got cleared out).

For now I've used the logs to recreate the whitelist with everyone who has logged in since Nov 28th. This evening I'll get a backup of the whitelist I have and merge it to re-whitelist those who haven't logged on recently. If you need to get on before then, PM me.

This is probably a dumb question, and, heck, I guess it is. How worth my $27 is minecraft? Being the big XBL gamer I am, is it really going to be worth it? So far it hasn't sold me completely, but I hear it's that kind of game. What do you think?

I'd recommend it highly.

You get much more than your money's worth on PC, what with all the mods and such- between things like Adventure Craft, the various Tech upgrades, servers, and everything else around, it's brilliant, and you're basically getting a half-dozen games.

Even if it's just XBLA, you should still get a lot of enjoyment out of the basic game.

I'd say easily. It can be an adventure game, a sandbox construction game, an mmorpg, and the amount of mods. From nuclear power, to fossils and dinosaurs.

In other words, if you determine a game's quality based on the number of hours you'll spend playing it, then Minecraft is the BEST game on the market today, if ever, simply because you'll probably be playing it for most of the rest of your life, if you enjoy it, and you probably will find something about it that's enjoyable. I'm not exagerrating on this, either. The game continues to grow and evolve, and with mods and updates, there will always be new content around.

If you base a game's quality on the graphics, well... Minecraft does not have realistic graphics, by default. However, it is fairly simple to find texture packs which drastically change the look of the game- from packs which simplify the look, to HD texture packs that hyper-detail everything, to photo-realistic texture packs that attempt (and almost succeed!) in fooling the eye into believing the blocky world is our own.

If you base a game on number of quests, then it'll be terrible. The only 'scripted' content is the very, very 'end', and for many people, they won't even reach that. It's a build game, through and through. If you enjoyed LEGOs before they had story attached, you'll like the game.

Essentially, whether or not the game is 'worth it' is completely up to you. You get out of Minecraft what you bring in, and that's about it. The question that you have to ask yourself, then, is this:

Is your own imagination worth $27?

I do some extent. Due to the amount of high-graphic games I've been playing these days, I just find I can no longer have fun with games of lesser quality (exceptions exist). It just seems to me that if I'm going to spend a chunk of cash on a game, much less a computer game (although you can get an xbox version), I want something that will not disappoint me. No, I'm not saying this would disappoint me because of graphics, because old games like Starcraft have been favorites of mine and that will never change. I want a game that is well worth my money.

If you base a game on number of quests, then it'll be terrible. The only 'scripted' content is the very, very 'end', and for many people, they won't even reach that. It's a build game, through and through. If you enjoyed LEGOs before they had story attached, you'll like the game.

I've never really cared for quests much, and also have practically enjoyed LEGOs since they were released. For that reason I might like it.

Is your own imagination worth $27?

On the short note, no. I personally have never been good with things like Halo forge and map building programs for RTS's. I can never think of an idea that is good enough (and well thought out enough) to build anything. Sure, I used to build very unique LEGO creations, but they always seemed to be the same thing in the end.
Really what has (sort of) sold me on the game is HammerCraft. That is kind of the thing I've dreamed of, but never happened.
So, based on what I've said, now what do you think?

As for the texture packs I wouldn't recommend going past the 128x128 packs, they go up to something like 512x512 now but there are performance issues.

By default I think it uses 16x16 or 8x8 for the texture, you have to actually patch the game to be able to use the higher ones. However it does stay as blocks so it simply allows you to choose how nice those blocks look.

You are able to download it from their site and play it offline for free though, buying the game simply allows multiplayer so you could see what it's like properly to help make your choice.

However after playing multi I've found it somewhat difficult to go back to single.

Also like others have said there are quite a few things you can do, I'm sort of out of ideas for building so I just have the one house now and go on cave runs with some of the other players to explore and such.

On a boat, Trying not to die.

You can do a 16x16 without a Mod?

This is relevant to Chowder's interests...

Only if the base was 16x16 and not 8x8 like I think it may be. The "mod" is incredibly simple though. Just run it, point it to minecraft.jar then click patch.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/232701-100-11w50aupdate-1216-mcpatcher-hd-fix-230-01/

I can use my texture pack without it but it's sort of trippy and the water is just an error message telling me to update.

The graphics look like this, does that bother you?

Minecraft is little more than a building tool much like halo forge, lego or gmod so if you don't enjoy those then you are unlikely to like minecraft.

It bothers me if that's what I'm spending $27 on. I'll try the free version and see for myself.

Just remember that the free version is definitely inferior to the paid version.

The free version doesn't even have a day-night cycle, and IIRC is stuck in creative mode, rather than the more interesting Adventure mode, and also has no monsters.
