I'm getting a new stormcast army together and thinking about basing. I started playing in 3rd edition (before a long break) where basing meant goblin green and maybe some flock. I want to recreate that feel now with a more modern touch. So, what would be your modern take on the classic goblin green base?
As a side note: I'm really interested in what people will come up with without limits. But for my personal army I'm looking for the answer that is simple+easy.

The modern version would probably involve texture paints or pastes, dried, painted and then some flock. then a dark green rim.

Goblin green top, sand, flock, and dark brown rim. I started to do that for my 3rd ed marines and it looks great.

PVA Glue, fine sand/dirt, another coat of watered PVA glue to seal. Alternatively use textured paints, or CA glue and sprinkle sand. Then prime, basocat with X depending on a theme I.e. Urban/concrete or Muddy. (brown /black/grey)/ Then add a wash and drybrush a layer of highlight and your done..Add a tuft of grass if you are feeling adventurous. Paint the rim whatever colour best contrast with your miniature and the base colour. Plenty tutorials on how to base minins on youtube. FYI I think goblin green rim is the equivalent of "retro" in fashion. never goes out of style... Personal taste of course.

Wait, were we supposed to stop using goblin green to base with? My pot is still good, and the bag of flock I bought in the early 90’s is still mostly full.
I do add rocks and flower tufts these days.

I do love some Goblin Green. Nothing gets me more nostalgic.
I've never really thought about it, but why Goblin Green? The only thing that I can think is maybe that it was meant to blend into the grass flock that was common back in the day. Right now I use Incubi Darkness to paint my rims, it indexes the classic Goblin Green but is a little less obtrusive.
For the bases themselves, I just do some PVA glue sand before I prime my models. Three step paint: Bloodreaver Flesh, Drybursh Zandri Dust, Agrax Earthshade Watch. Then a few blobs of PVA glue and dip it in the static grass and you got a pretty good base! Fits in on almost any tables.

Yeah I think so.
If you look at the majority of old photos they all had these green mats and even the offcial board they released with those hills/rock was perfect for that.

I think gg bases only belong in history. You can probably get away with it on retro miniatures, but using it on modern miniatures.. Nah.

I have 2 pots of Goblin green, the flip top bolter pots still good after 10 years, I stopped using GG for bases ever since 4th edition when they went over to steel legion drab or whatever it was called before,

Believe it or not, I still have a bottle of Chestnut, Black, Brown, Yellow, Purple, and Red Ink, and Flesh Wash. Plus a whole set of Foundation Paints - including Carcharodon Granite (although the pot is only a quarter full at this late date).
