Hey there, I dabbled with DoT a bit in first edition, but haven't really played any AoS in the last year. With the uncertain future of Privateer Press, and the fact that the models are cool, I've been contemplating starting STD, but all mounted. I'm picturing two 10 man units of knights, two 5 man units of knights, two 10 man units of Marauder horsemen, and two 5 man units of Marauder horsemen to be my core. What sorts of challenges would I face with such a one dimensional list? How would I go about making it viable in a semi competitive meta?

Can you provide any more information about your meta and what you are up against?

Slaanesh Despoilers built around the Ruinbringer Battalion maybe?

Locally, I don't actually know the lay of the land. I've seen a couple Idoneth and DoK armies, as well as a fair number of DoT. I've definitely seen at least one Fyreslayer player too. As I'm hopping over from another game system (and friend group), I don't know the local AoS folks too well yet. The people I know I'll be paying against are in another state: Ironjawz, Nurgle, Blades of Khorne and Stormcast are what they play.

Overall I just want to have a thematic list that can hold its own, I'm not really looking to slam my gamer cock around (that's what Warmachine is for).

You could always run a War Mammoth. Those fit the bill.

Against the first group of armies you mentioned, all mounted StD will not be able to produce a viable army. Against the second group you could pull it off.

Can you throw some Varanguard in? They’re mounted and essentially units of heroes. In fact, there is an army list in the Wrath of the Everchosen book that makes them heroes (and gives artifacts and command traits).

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Archaon, war mammoth, chariots, manticores, karkadrak, war shrines, slaughterbrute, varanguard etc all fit the theme of mounted or fast.

Against top tier armies it will hurt, but that’s the story for any army that isn’t top tier.
Having a fast moving army has its own advantages though, despite model count.

You would however need to learn a fair bit about the game to know what units are safe to charge and what you should avoid.
Picking targets is something you’ll have to do, along with multiple charges on 1 unit to get the damage you need.

Next question, would “Gaunt Summoner on Disc” fit your mounted requirement? Technically the disc used to be a mount in all editions of WHFB and 40k. Might as well treat it as such since it boosts his movement like normal mounts do in AoS. Cuz you couldn’t go wrong having him and summoning some objective holders.

Man to bad the Sorcerer on Mount is gone. I loved that thing.

For you the biggest problem i can see is just damage in general. Also a War Shrine like others have said will be a great addition. B.c you want all Mount i would get the new Chaos Lord on Karkadrak, i honestly might get 2 b.c you are not going to have a lot of Priest for support.

Karkadraks put out 13 attacks each. They make pretty good blenders. Gonna second that. Maybe get two SCs and sell off the warriors if you don’t want foot troops. Hell, I’ll go 1/3s on one of the boxes with you and take a set of the Warriors, if you want. I’m sure somebody else will happily do the same for the second set.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've decided to go for a more balanced approach to the army, and learn to play it as it was designed, before veering off into skews. All the models are really good looking, even some of the older kits.

I think that is quite a wise plan.
