Hi,
Back in the second edition the story, as far as I was aware, was the the world of WFB was in the same universe but trapped inside a warp storm or something and that’s why we had largely the same races and some sneaky stuff like Slaan as an army in WFB and buy only in the most of lore in 40k I.e. were they the old ones etc.
So my questions are
1) Am I just remembering teenage speculation or was that official unofficial line by GW
2) now WFB is AOS is there such a link or do GW largely try and presented that there’s no link between eleven and eldar now they have re names all the armies?
3) choas though

It was very heavily implied. Not sure if it was ever explicitly stated.
I know in one of the fantasy campaigns, there was a “magic item” which was a powerfist.
I seem to recall there being something about why chaos was flowing from the north was a broken warp gate.

In Fantasy the Magic came from the north and south poles as it flowed in through broken gates into the realm of chaos and they also had a planetary webway. There was also a third gate into chaos that was kept shut.
But they aren't connected. As I understand it the older editions of Fantasy did imply a link but nowadays AoS and 40k are seperate universes entirely. So things like AoS Slaanesh and 40k Slaanesh are seperate entities.

Yeah what always got me on the connection was how they reused the same chaos gods and demons between the two universes. But I'm tracking they are separate.
edit for clarification.

I am not sure it was ever an official connection (not to mention WFB, if in very early versions, pre-dating 40K).
There certainly was some fun in the White Dwarf about the WFB world being stuck somewhere in the 40K galaxy, and possibly Sigmar even being the never-recovered-Legion II or Legion XI Primarch.
But it'd always considered that more "easter eggs" or "writers having a laugh" (back in days when there was also stuff like Obiwan Sherlock Cloussea, etc..). Not "official" lore-building.

The lore in the early days was much much more flexible and not really set in stone. There were casual links all over the place; however the biggest was simple that one game spawned from the other.
I don't think they ever formally admitted any links, it was a fan theory and there were hints here and there that could be taken that it was suggested. However as time has passed the separation grew and grew.
Even the Chaos Gods don't link perfectly and there's some subtle differences. Eg in 40K Slaanesh is often refereed to as being female. Meanwhile in Old World and 40K Slaanesh is nearly always spoken of as male.
Both admit that Slaanesh isn't of fixed gender anyway, but each takes a different overall generalist view. She Who Thirsts and The Prince

It was never official and I think at one point outright denied during the Kirby era. There's the odd 40k reference in Fantasy, the most recent and extensive of which I can think of is the Liber Chaotica which was written by someone in the Old World but referenced Chaos Marines and mentioned a magical weapon wielded by chaos champions with jagged teeth that came to life in the bearers hands. Going further there was a model of a Nurgle champion from waaaaay back who wielded an eldar weapon. Can't remember if it was a plasma gun or a shuriken pistol.

I’ve never seen it firsthand so I’m just reposting the rumor, but supposedly there was some special weapon in an early edition of fantasy that was a boltgun.

That was for a campaign in, I believe, the early 2000's. It was more an easter egg than anything. This went back and forth over the years but as GW became more corporate they distanced themselves from it, even I believe flat out denying they were linked.
Of course everyone knows that the 40k galaxy is just some experiment in a snow globe in a wizards office in Altdorf.
In seriousness the actual theory back in the early days was not that the Warhammer World was a planet in 40k but that the Old ones transcended dimensions in making their creations (this was when humans were an old one creation in both worlds) as did the chaos gods in wreaking havoc. The link was through the realm of chaos/warp which is how those 40k weapons made it to Albion.

The part where that falls apart is where all 20 primarchs were found and all 20 fought in the Great Crusade. This is easy information to find...
Anyhoo, there have been numerous connections over the years such as the treasures of the Old Ones from the Albion campaign. Try to guess which 40k items those are. The mad ravings of a wizard seeing Dark Mechanicus daemon engines in some of the old Liber Chaotica books, Draigo seemingly showing up in one of the End Times books. The 3 minor gods of Chaos (Ans'l, Mo'rcck and Phraz-Etar) who the CSMs honour with the spikes on their armour, though the people they are based on are known for more fantasy leaning work (or simply creating Chaos in WHFB/ GW themselves) etc. I seem to recall there was one where it was flipped and it implied the 40k universe was simply inside a crystal ball on a wizard's desk or something.
Now, AFAIK there has been no connection between 40k and AOS, but give it time, they might sneak a few references in here and there. That Draigo one is only but 5 years old at this point.

In the original Realms Of Chaos books, one of the mutations you could roll for your champion was 'technology', and you would then roll on a secondary table for what technological weapon your patron god gifted you with.
I never got to field him, but I had a chaos lord in my fantasy army with a missile launcher...

I think everyone who played at the time knew the lines were fuzzy, especially chaos.

Yeah, I don't recall where it was written, but there was definitely a reference way back in the day to the Warhammer World being located in the 40K universe, in a warp bubble.
It was never really expanded past that one throwaway reference, and even that was really just there to justify the crossovers between the two settings.
From 3rd edition onwards, the studio moved to more completely separate the two settings, although there were still the occasional crossovers, and from then on, whenever they were asked the studio guys consistently said that the two settings were now considered separate entities that just happened to share some elements.

Definitely a lot of old hints in the 1E (possibly even 2E) era that the WHF was a lost world somewhere in the 40K universe (I seem to remember speculation it was an Eldar Exodite world at that). I think there is a White Dwarf 40K picture where the is a book on the shelf that references Warhammer's Old World, though I don't have any White Dwarfs to confirm.
I seem to recall Talisman (which I believe is set in the Old World) having a space marine, power armor and a bolter item card for the 1E Warp add-on (an add-on we banned, primarily due to the Warp Belt).

Then yes. Space orks went with a c ... orc. Otherwise fantasy in space was the idea. Those posting above remember details better.
Now the connection is implied at the level of marketing gimmick... restartes are stormcastes in spirit and I shun both equally for the same reasons.

In fairness Sigmar just vanished. He walked into the Northern Wastes and was never seen again so its not beyond the realm of possibility. Also the Draigo thing is never explicitly stated, its just a knight with silver armour who shoots blue flame out his hands. Just another easter egg really.
Another one I forgot was the Skaven butt-dialing an Eldar craftworld. Or at at least contacting a race if elf looking things that spoke a weird language.
