.. so some of the more .. venerable..... members will remember this perhaps.
Got an offer to borrow a boxset of this on DVD, have some vague memory of it showing on Channel 4 in the UK at various times.
Also remember it being quite "in" or whatever for a while anyway.
Worth a watch or not ?
Another friend said they enjoyed it but said they felt that much of it was very USA/regionally specific.
The latter one assumes can't be that much of an issue given it's apparent popularity back in the day stateside and as to the former... well.... I'm sure there's bits that's pass one by but I'm sure it's not impenetrable.
Said person also doesn't/didn't get Seinfeld either too TBF so maybe it's just them.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I have vague recollections of it being fairly typical what I now know to be police procedural (odd ball partnership solves episodic challenges with occasional multi part stories or call backs) but have a weird sensation that it went a bit weird towards the end because of casting issues?
Also vaguely recall the theme being quite good.

Not entirely sure how well it’ll age, but I certainly have fond memories of the inhabitants of Sicily, Alaska. Would definitely take an opportunity to watch again...

The theme is so catchy we had to buy the CD.
I vaguely remember the show being pleasant and comfortable without being challenging. I believe a lot of the shows popularity was due to one of the actors becoming a TV heartthrob for a season or two, if that impacts your expectations.

I remember watching it at my Grandparents.
Alaska is in the USA, but the setting is very similar to any “Northern Town” in the US or Canada. I love Northern living, so the setting was immediately comfortable and the characters really felt natural and alive without being complete caricatures.
I’d watch it again, though the last season was a bit awkward.

Terrifying Doombull

Huh. I thought Northern Exposure was 'that show about Canada' (the one that wasn't an extended Mountie joke). I guess I was thinking of something else all this time.
I can't remember any hook that got me watching it, and I actually watched TV at the time (or at least had it on in the background). Want to say it was on in roughly the same time frame as Lois and Clark and Wings, which was a period where I'd describe TV shows as 'fine, but ultimately pretty banal.'

I think it was on after Murphy Brown and Designing Women, or maybe Chicago Hope. It was a time when a TV show could skate pretty far on a catchy theme song. (Glares at L.A. Law.)
