With 9th announced just as i was about to rejoin the hobby, would it be an idea to hold off on buying any miniatures until the edition drops? I had planned for the use of a black templars list, or perhaps a standard imperial fists list (likely crimson fists) (maybe both!)

Depends. OTOH buying now gives you something to paint. OTOH you risk burning money as nobody can tell yet what is good and what sucks in 9th. Only thing we can tell is there will be units that are awesome and units that sucks.

Depending on how fast painter is you could just buy and paint slowly.

Marines are fairly safe though especially custom colour scheme so you can chapter hop as needed.

It depends on what's most important to you really. If you're hoping to play competitively, then wait. If you're more interested in Black Templars and Imperial Fists because they look cool, well, they'll still looks cool in 9th.

There's also the other factor of who you'll typically be playing against. If they're causal players just there to have fun then competitiveness doesn't really matter because they'll find their own balance.

If they're very competitive then you have to match the meta or you'll be frustrated, so best to wait I think.

I'm still working on my Sisters of Battle box set and planning to hold off on other purchases until I get that taken care of. At the pace I've been working, I'm sure 9th will be out by then and some kind of analysis on what's hot/not will have been done.

Basic Troops & HQ models are probably safe choices to work on until we get an idea.

This coincides with a 300-point new-army tourney at the club I go to.
It's lucky I picked Ad Mech ages ago They're getting lots of stuff just now.

Rules come and go. Todays FOTM is tomorrow’s dust bunny. Build the army you love and hold the course.

By the time you finish painting it, it might be worth fielding again!

I’ll probably pick up some new toys for my Ultras.
Eldar are waiting for more plastics.
Deathwatch might get more stuff if I like the look of things.

But my 9th edition project is going to be to start a small Tyranid army. Putting it together mostly on theme and looks, and a basic TAC approach. Still in the concept stage. Probably grab a unit and paints to work out schemes, start in earnest near the end of the year.

If you're chasing what's good in the meta, wait until things settle out, then purchase the good stuff.

Or, just go for what's cool. I'm slowly picking up marines as a new army for 9th edition but I'll always be adding more to my Eldar. There's no guarantee either will be good, but can't go wrong with having an army you enjoy!

Eldar is a clear example of meta chasing. It’s generally always been near the top of the power curve, but the units that are “hot” at any given moment are as mercurial as the enigmatic Eldar themselves. And no way of guessing which way the wind will blow next. So pick up the units you like, add a little of the latest hotness if you need to be more competitive, or break out the old stuff if it’s their time to shine again.

And wave serpents. Because they have always been broken.

as for a new army, with few exceptions (primaris Marines getting a new troop option every so often for example) , the core of an army won't change so if you where wanting to start say... sisters of battle, snagging a handfull of battlesister squads isn't likely to hurt you.

I';d say start black templars by buying some basic stuff, (maybe Dark Imperium or know no fear) but don't go too far along as it's clear that the upcoming marine release is gonna be "big time black templar stuff"

Hold off buying new minis until the new edition drops, and then you'll be able to get an incredible number of Necron halves of the starter box really cheaply as people buy it for the Marines and flood the market with secondhand NOS Necrons.
