Dear Dakkas,

I love the Adeptus Mechanicus, but the aesthetics of the GW models are controversial for many. The new Pteraxii and Serberys look too fantastical again, not the kind of units you would expect from cold, hard logic. Not to mentioned the ridiciously expensive prices. I prefer the Forgeworld range, but they still do not have any official rules for 40K. So I am relying on many third party miniatures. I though I'd share the alternative ranges I have come across.

There is already a five year old thread about this, but it is cluttered and outdated. I will include it's content in this thread. Here we go:

Wargame Exclusive - Mechanic Adepts
High quality miniatures, lots of detail and suitably grim dark. A lot of female Tech-Priests. I especially like the alternate Castellan Heads.

Hitech Miniatures - Bio Tech Covenant
Good miniatures, especially a lot of nice tech-priests. Fair prices.

Blight Wheel Miniatures - Sino Russia
Nice little miniature range.

Ramshackle Games - Robed Cyborgs
Interesting tanks and robots. I especially like some of the walkers.

Micro Art Studio - Iron Brotherhood
Solid miniatures and good price, unfortunately discontinued and only available second hand.

If you know any other alternate AM miniature ranges, please post them, I will update them in the first post!

Fluff-wise you need to remember that each forgeworld is independent and will do things their own way. The GW miniatures represent Mars (and Jes Goodwin has explained the design choices several times).

Anvil Industries do some great infantry. They did some nice robots as part of the Afterlife line, but they're currently unavailable.

They do have some nice bits, but not enough to warrant it being called a miniature range unfortunately. I also find their website obtuse.

Talking about websites, the ramshackle webstore went down while I wrote the post lol.

The GW Skitarii don't really do it for me either. I managed to pick up about 50 Dream Forge Games infantry a while back. Too bad they are now OOP. They look perfect for making some Skitarii.

I mean, if you prefer the FW range just...use them and call them something else.

At this point, there are few FW mechanicum models you can't use and proxy as something else.

For example, I've got:

Thallax - Now these are gonna be Pteraxi. Hooray! They can stop being Sicarian Infiltrators!

Myrmidons - Kataphrons. Destructors as Destroyers, the axe ones as Breachers.

Castellax - Fist Kastelans

Vorax - Gun Kastelans

Thanatar - I do use this one as an Onager, which is a bit weird LOS wise but tends to present my opponent an advantage so they dont mind. You could also use it as a Knight Helverin conceivably, they're similarly sized.

Ursarax - Ruststalkers

Non-chaos plague drone thingy - New Plane

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

The FW mechanicum are epic. Hopefully the new FW books will integrate some of them into 40k.

I'm dying to have an excuse to justify buying a Triaros, Karaknos, or Thanatar. I already have a Domitar that subs as a fist-bot or twin CCW contemptor.

My triaros has been that assault drill thingy since they released rules for that.

That's interesting, hadn't considered that. So in a manner of speaking, Mars is the Cadia of Admech. Does make you wonder what other Forge Worlds might look like.

It never ends well

It would be great to discover that some of the others have kept their Thallax around so I could use them.

If the Thanatar had 40k rules I'd have purchased one ages ago.
