Hi all

So one of the proposed 9th edition rule change is that vehicles/monsters will get the ability to fire when in combat, but whether this means they can only target units they are engaged with or they can only target units they aren’t engaged with is not yet clear.

So, would this make smash captains and chaplains obsolete, or at least less valuable? It seems to me that a key attraction of the smash cap/chap model is putting the hurt on large targets without being able to be fired upon. So in my mind it begs the question: would the amount of hurt inflicted be worth having the points invested in such a model wiped out by concentrated fire in response?

What do you all think?

Most of the things that can absorb a smash captains attacks and still be there have the ability to retreat and fire now so I don't think it will change much. (Pending fall back changes if any)

Smash Captains exist because they can do a wildly disproportionate amount of damage, not because they can keep things locked in combat. They'll continue to exist as long as the stack of relics/stratagems that enables them exists and as long as it's trivial to get them into combat without being attacked.

The existence of Primaris Eliminators has done a lot more to damage Smash Captains than the changes to the vehicle rules will.

Smash captains generally one shot knights(one of primary uses). What survives that and didn"t have ability to fall back and shoot? Russ etc just dies

Without knowing the rules, and point costs you could ask your magic 8 ball as well. GW already confirmed that points are going up for every faction.

The top BA lists don't even use them.

We dont know.....

1) What is the Order in which attacks happen with tanks?
2) Can tanks only shoot into melee if its ont he controlling players turn?
3) Is tanks melee like old Tank shock, or is it just auto hits?
4) Can tank drive through melee, and if so what is the damage?
5) Does the charging player get to swing first always?
6) When the tank move out of combat does the infantry unit get to attack first? (see ?#1)

etc...

The rumored range restriction on character protection would also negatively impact the ol' smashies if real. Part of the reason they're so obnoxious is that if you're 11" away from them but some other enemy unit is 10" away in the complete opposite direction your gunners go "Shoot WHO? WHO? the guy who just punched our knight to death, I can't see him I'm SO DISTRACTED by the drop pod sitting behind me!!!"

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
