Hi community
So Ive come around to the idea and I've thinking about giving audio books a try.
Bit late to the party but better late then never.
I've tried ebooks but just cant get into it.. Had a kindle back in the day and ended up giving it to my mum.
I really LOVE the feeling of getting a new book. The smell & the feel is very cathartic to me.
Alas, once you read em what then? I hate the idea of throwing awya books. It just seems like a sin against knowledge reason so I end up giving them away to people I know or charities as I simply don't have room anymore.
One day maybe will have a dedicated library room but not sure if and when I will get that mansion..
Therefore I have slowly came around to the idea of going audio-books. I enjoy some youtube Lore content and actually like when creators read long passages.
Im looking to use my phone as the medium for this but also maybe my PC so I can listen to ebooks while doing other stuff.
So some questions to the community for experience:
How are prices compared to physical books these days?
What do people recommend in terms of apps/programs?
For bonus points, where can I get good deals for audio-books?
And what do people recommend ?
The reader seems important, Is there any particular publisher that has the beast voice readers?
Looking at scifi/40k and historical/historical fiction books to start with.
Think the heresy books might be good starting point, so which one? I like chronological stories.. But also wouldn't mind going over some harder reads(last hard read was the god delusion) .
Appreciate any feedback in advance.
Thanks!

I do Audio books for Commutes, when i had commutes.
but also they are great for hobbying.
Where they shine are action stories and the like. This allows you to still keep up, but you can focus on another thing too.

There is a company called graphic aduio. They dont just get a guy to read the book. They rework it into a script with a full voice cast, music, and sound effects.
On the one hand they are amazing. Its like listening to old audio dramas but with great production values. On the other hand they will ruin all other audio books for you forever.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

While im fairly wary of Amazon I am very happy with my Audible subscription.
I listened to a lot over the last 2 years as I used to do a lot of driving and frankly miss being on the road with just an audiobook. I think what really got me hooked was The Dark Tower series, I'd highly recommend that, the work done by both readers was fantastic.
Recently I've gone through some of the Eisenhorn books and the first five Hours Heresy books. All I enjoyed plenty.
One of the good things about Audible is you can half treat it like a library, once you've finished a book you can return it to get your credit back. There might be a year cap on how long you have to return it, but I've done it plenty for books I dont think I'll listen to again.
Some others I loved were Gardens Of The Moon and Deadhause Gates in the Malazan series. And if you're in to Aliens check out Alien:Out Of The Shadows, its more an audio drama with a few great voice actors in there, there might even be more in that series

I don’t particularly recommend them, as they’re not right for me.
On my (former, good riddance, thanks COVID-19!) commute, intended to have a snooze.
When painting or working, my concentration is elsewhere, so I tend to miss bits. Same with driving, as I tend to use music and that as background noise, rather than something I’m actively listening to.

If you’re looking for 40k, the audio dramas aren’t half bad. These last for an hour maximum, but come with sound effects and a cast. Scions if Elysia was pretty cool.
You might also be able to find public domain works read outloud in podcasts. For example, there are a number of podcasts dedicated to reading Lovecraft. Podcasts are free though, so they may be helpful as a cost-effective option.

Sweet god, yes. Tried some Graphic Audio adaptations of DC comics, and was blown away at the production quality. Perfect audio, decent cast, and makes it feel like listening to a movie.
Funny thing though. They seem to really like the Five Nights at Freddy’s trailer music for some reason? Heard it a couple of times in the middle of a story or two.

Interesting. I wonder what the legal stance is on this from.the persprctive of the creator. I mean if i pay for the physical book and then choose to read it out loud, am.i infringing copyright?
Tjanks for the feedback ya'll. This is mainly for work. I sometimes spend whole 8hr shifts having nothing to do (joys of nights). At home i usualy listen to music or podcast when working on minis etc.

Argive wrote:How are prices compared to physical books these days?
This largely depends on the publisher, the book, and to a lesser extent the recording itself. Somewhere around $35.00 CAD seems to be the general average, and I've seen as high as $50 for book 4 of the incredibly popular fantasy book series I've never heard of and as low as $15 for an abridged reading of an already pulpy star wars book that was recorded more than a decade ago. Though for reasons I'll outline below it's not really a problem for me.
Setting aside Amazon being Amazon, I would enthusiastically recommend Audible. Prior to that I would buy audiobooks directly from publishers (mainly Black Library) or google play, and doing so would give you access to a zip file full of MP3s which, if properly set up, you could drop into your MP3 player of choice (or phone, in my case) and be able to listen to them in order, and just the idea of being able to have the app keep track of my place in a given book if I stopped listening to it to play some music for a while was a revolution to me.
In general, the android app has been phenomenal for me, it maintains a list of your available books and allows you to download them locally (but will warn you, several times, if you try to download those books over your data plan), keeps track of what point in the book you are at when you stop listening (and maintains that place across platforms). Navigating your list, the store, or downloading books can be difficult if the connection is spotty, but if you have the book loaded already over wifi you're still able to listen to the book without it being interrupted. The worst glitch I've seen is when a spotty connection causes Amazon's central server and your app to disagree on where you last left off in the book, but in those cases the app asks you which is correct. In general it's been a much more stable application than Spotify on the same device.
As far as I know, their only desktop support is an in-browser listening tool that lets you play the book through the audible website - and it's not nearly as good as the phone app. The interface is less functional (you can play, pause, go back 30 seconds and navigate chapter menus and that's it) but it also keeps track of where you left off across platforms, so it's at least viable.
Argive wrote:For bonus points, where can I get good deals for audio-books?
And the best thing about Audible, for me, is that it's a monthly service charging $15.00 a month. Every month that subscription gives you one credit, which can be redeemed for any one book, whether it's $15 or $50, the credits take 12 months to expire so you aren't immediately hard pressed to pick a book as soon as you get one, and if you find you want to continue a series and won't get another credit for 20 days, you can buy the book for a discounted member price, or (better) purchase credits in groups of 3 for $40.
Right now I'd recommend Alphabet Squadron and it's sequel. If only because they've got me interested in the larger Star Wars universe again.
Beyond that, the Ciaphas Cain audiobooks have been very high quality productions for black library, with two primary readers representing Amberley's annotations and Cain's memoirs respectively, plus a third reader for Sulla's interludes - who's husky voice and over-the-top delivery was so good they hired her to be the Sororitas voice over in the 40k 9th edition trailer.
I'd also recommend We are Legion (We are Bob), an audible original - about a guy who buys into a cryogenics scheme in the modern day and wakes up to find his brain patterns are being used as the basis for an AI driven Von Neuman probe. All the perspective characters are him and copies of him, and it's a genuinely fun story.
Argive wrote:The reader seems important, Is there any particular publisher that has the beast voice readers?
I think being a reader is contract work, with the recording studios optioning to call you back for more. For fun I looked up Saskia Maarleveld and Carol Monda, who each did an Alphabet Squadron book, and sure enough they both have plenty of star wars credits before and after, along with a pile of fantasy, romance, and children's novels all with different publishers.
Some publishers though, are a different story. You can break down audiobook presentation into a few distinct categories:
Single Reader - One person, reading the book, completely straightforward. Recorded Books is a pioneer of the audiobook industry and uses this format (I'm listening to Wizard of Earthsea right now and it's quite good)
Single Reader + Accompaniment - One person reading the book, plus gimmicks such as musical stings at the beginning and end of the book, or breaking up chapters, the reader putting on a voice or accent or overacting to indicate a character is speaking, or maybe a secondary reader of the opposite sex to read the speaking parts of characters they main reader can't do a voice for. Black Library sits pretty comfortably in this category.
Large Production - Which I'd call the 'Star Wars Production' because I haven't seen anyone else do it, but imagine it must exist. Involves one or more readers putting on voices and accents for speaking characters, plus musical accompaniment (original or licensed), plus sound effects (original or licensed). Most Star Wars books follow this format to varrying degrees, from the subdued (Alphabet Squadron employs a mix of original and licensed star wars music to set a scene or describe tension as pilots run to their ships) to the over the top (Wedge Antilles feels good reminiscing about winning a game of cards while the force theme blares triumphantly in one of the X-Wing productions)
Radio Play - Also called 'audio drama' or 'dramatization', reads from a script instead of a book, generally much shorter than any of the other productions, and probably cheap enough that you'd just buy them for the asking price instead of using a credit. They generally employ multiple actors, sound effects, music, and often no narrator. Black Library has been doing more of these but if they're your primary interest I'd actually point you towards the many free episodic dramatic podcasts out there like the Black Tapes or Wolf 359. World War Z, which has many chapters devoted to interviewing survivors of the zombie apocalypse, utilizes this format quite effectively.
Argive wrote:Looking at scifi/ 40k and historical/historical fiction books to start with.

I think the first three Heresy books form a solid trilogy (though I haven't revisted them in a while...) but after that I wasn't really interested enough to keep going with the series, just picking up the odd book that interested me. The first three Ciaphas Cain books are available now, and they're good fun, but just in general I think 40k books require you to go in knowing what you want.
For something more challenging (or perhaps simply infuriating) there are a couple of 19 hour long readings of the Mueller report out there, the Audible original one was free - though I'm not sure if it still is. I liked Scatter, Adapt, and Remember as a treaties on humanity's future, but I haven't heard the audio production, ditto for The Road.

With regards to Audiobooks vs Paper, I find myself entirely on the audio side of things these days. I have trouble just sitting down and reading like I once did, but any time I'm driving/commuting/on the bus, working around the house, out walking, etc I've got an audiobook playing, and I've been getting through a whole lot more books that way than I have in years.
That said, audiobooks are expensive if you're buying and not pirating them, so that's something to keep in mind. Audible generally has the best content out there.
My interest in audiobooks tracks along the same lines, Scifi/fantasy/history mostly.
The stuff I've enjoyed most so far have been the Mistborn trilogy (they did an excellent audio narrative with distinct voice actors for each character, music, sound effects, etc), Pandoras Star/Judas Unleashed, Revelation Space series, the Automatic Detective, Imperial Radch/Ancillary Justice series, Old Man's War, anything by Ian Banks, Hyperion, Red Mars, Altered Carbon, and Neuromancer.

As a (free) alternative, may I recommend some oldtime radio shows? Go to Youtube and look up old radio shows like Gunsmoke, Dragnet, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, Suspense, Jack Benny, and so on. Not the same as an audiobook, no, but still quite good, and with full casts rather than a single voice.

This is a great idea, there's an insanely gargantuan amount of this content out there, and it's exactly the kind of thing you can put on while doing something else and miss something momentarily and not worry about it too much.
You can also use a program like 4kYouTubeToMP3 to just transfer the audio from a YouTube video to a local device for your own listening if data connections/bandwidth/etc is an issue. ( AFAIK that's not piracy, but IANAL). I do this with a lot of youtube stuff, particularly where the video just isn't relevant to the content.

I'm not a fan of audiobooks. I tend to zone out for chunks of time and then when I refocus on the audiobook I'm completely lost.
On commutes, I find having someone talking at me constantly makes me sleepy which is not great for focusing on not crashing. I just listen to regular radio or music in the car.
The only time I liked audiobooks was when I lived in a noisy apartment, I'd put on an audiobook to help me get to sleep as it'd drown out other noises that were keeping me awake. White noise doesn't work for me as my brain seems to hunt for patterns in white noise which slowly drives me insane

Audible will let you refund/exchange audiobooks if you start one up and realize you hate it. I picked up a bunch of short stories and then accidentally also purchased the compiled version. They refunded me no questions asked.

Audible will let you refund/exchange audiobooks if you start one up and realize you hate it. I picked up a bunch of short stories and then accidentally also purchased the compiled version. They refunded me no questions asked.
I cant figure out how to do it.
I picked up the horus heresy audio collection 1 not realising its not a book and a separate 1hr thing.

Go to your purchase history on the Website to exchange books on PC, or on the iPhone app (maybe android as well but I don't have one to test) hit the 3 dots next to the book in your library and there is an exchange book button.

On the site, you can review your purchase history and return books that you've only listened to a certain amount of.
If you're looking to get into the Horus Heresy specifically the first book in the series is Horus Rising, followed by False Gods and Galaxy in Flames, which form a solid trilogy about Horus turning against the emperor and starting his big evil plan, etc.
I do think some of the books take place before that one chronologically, but by and large the HH series is about the heresy itself, with the great crusade presented in snippets and flash backs.

If you don't have a problem with trying out potentially bad books. The subscription is worth it for the selection of Free Audible Originals + 1 credit alone. I have spent 3 months with a sub, as well as purchased the 3 credit pack once, and I currently have 25 titles in my library. 6 of them I know are good/will be good as I bought them off my wish list with credits. The rest I got for free with my sub and downloaded because they sounded interesting and I didn't have anything to lose.

I have to say im pleasantly surpised. Im on "The flight of the eisenstein" already.
Really enjoyed the narration for the first 3 books and the story. Learning some cool lore. So far so good.

I went back to audible for the Horus Heresy. Love them. Sadly the best, Toby Longworth, doesn't stay too long, but the other voiceactors are mostly solid too.
For me audiobooks were an easy decision. I read a lot in my childhood, but now I'm too tired from work to read in bed and not fall asleep and I get sick if I even look at a book while on the subway to and from work, so I use that time to listen to audiobooks.
They are also great if you have a longer way on foot or while cooking and such, time you would not be able to do much else, not to mention while painting miniatures.
