This was a little flash of inspiration which came to me all of a suddenly the other day.
The issue was in not having enough space for a gaming table which you could access from all sides. My current setup has one short edge against the wall, which may prove an issue in the future.
My somewhat madcap idea, which I have coined "Wallhammer", is to get a 6'x4' magnetic whiteboard, flock it, and the put magnets on the bottoms of all our miniatures. Magnetize and ferrous-ize (add magnetic floors) to all the scenery, and boom, you've got a "top-down" view of a 40k table with minimal floorspace needed - and wallspace is normally much more plentiful anyway! warhammer, but played on the wall!
Has anyone ever seen such a thing? Would you play on it?

With many people switching to magnetic storage this might just be an interesting prospect for space challenged folk

The risk of knocking stuff over would be more serious, and you'd need all your opponents to have models sufficiently magnetized to hold themselves up, and you have leverage and sliding problems. It could work but it wouldn't be a trivial engineering challenge.

I have an extension of this idea for those with the room.... Make a rectangular/cuboid shape with white board/magnetic base on all sides bar the one on the ground....
You not have a 3D battle on the hull of a ship with all attackers having magnetised boots so they can stick to the 'hull' and fight it out.

If we are going to do it might as well put it on the roof, also concerned my fork might get magnetised to the board, as an alternative blu tak.

There's also a difference between magnets that will hold a model to a base which is otherwise normally standing to one that has to hold them at a 90 degree angle the whole time.
You'd also have to use magnetic strips on the tops of any areas of terrain otherwise you'd be trapped to a 2D battlefield.
I could see it working, but for many its too much extra effort and there is added risk. A bump or thump or a trip and suddenly you could have models tumbling down

I've got a better idea.
3d print all your models/terrain in about 15mm. Re-scale your ranges down. Now you can use a much smaller space.

Wallhammer (and Roofhammer) sound interesting.
But at that point, it might just be easier to go virtual with something like Tabletop Simulator. In VR mode, it's as beautiful, if not more, digitally. Especially if you can get animated models.

Nope. Sounds crazy to me. Sorry/not sorry.
What I HAVE seen done on model railway layouts is small pulleys in the ceiling. Hoist it up to near ceiling height during the normal day, lower it at playtime.

Magnetizing something like a naut or a knight to hold doesn't seem possible, not to mention all the issues with models that aren't fully glued for easier transportation or switching options.
You probably should look into just playing smaller games on the new table sizes.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Why not tallhammer?
Multilevel terrain on a smaller footprint. You dont need kits to do this- polystyrene foam sheets and pringles tubes will get you multilevel fast and you can add detail later.
