Hi everyone, this is supposed to be a more sweet less salty thread. There was one very early on in the announcement of 9th and now we have more information.

What are looking forward to most in 9th, looking forward to a time a largely updated codexes and new models. Obviously what you are looking forward to maybe guesses or assumptions

For me it’s starting a necron army, which I was not considering at all until I saw the new models for indomitus. I don’t know much about necrons so looking forward to absorbing their story and planning an army with a bit of my own story thrown in

This has been done already, but I'll play along.

I'm most looking forward to getting a new Codex.

A close (ish) second is Crusade, which sounds like it could be fun and doesn't use the Munitorum Field Manual points.

What am I looking forward to?
1) New models.
2) an eventual Crusade
3) training/teaching several new players how to play for fun instead of focusing only upon winning.
4) listening to/reading others rants about all things 9e (& occasionally making fun of them).

I've started a crusade last week which I've been looking forwards to and the necron revamp looks amazing, fingers crossed it's the edition for craftworld eldar to get the same treatment.

How does 9th support number 3? Sounds fantastic though

Most excited about getting Crusade started with my friends.

I am also looking forward to new non-marine models that have been teased in the Rumor Engine so far.

Canoptek Destructors have rad models, d2 rods of the covenant are going to be useful and not just the bargain bin option. I am looking forward to testing every Cron unit in the new codex to see what works. Fixing the yuck that a new 1d4chan user is writing on the Cron tactics article will feel good. I would not feel right writing an article before thorougly testing stuff, unfortunately that means letting other people that have not tested stuff either write whatever they want. I might do a little bit of crusading when I get my army ready, PL reductions for Crons means this a pretty good time to finally give PL a shot.

Having my Night Lords finally be equal to loyalist scum, and having a reason to bring csm besides filling troops slots.

And maybe, maybe, having gw make my fw toys playable again.

I'm tempted to start a small Necron army with only non-humanoid models, that is, once all the new leaked kits become available.

I always liked Age Of The Tripods when I was a youngin so when I saw those new canoptek monstrosities I knew I just had to get some of that ish! I dont fancy the T800 schwartzenegger skeletoids at all, so its going to be interesting to see if a viable list can be made from fielding only that Blackstone Fortress looking stuff.. And ok, maybe a C'Tan as a warlord But nothing on my roster that looks like it could say "I'll be back", flock no.

EDIT: Oh well okay then. Seems like canoptek-only armies are already a thing on the internets. These look BADASS! want <3

Same as any other edition really.
It just happens that this time we have several completely new players joining. (vs in 8th where it was just existing players & a few returning players. Well, & that 1 "new" player - who's a hard core tourney MTG guy. So his head was already full of poison.) You know, build up their resistance to the TourneyHammer Hive Mind & the ideas that x units are trash & have no place/use

Honestly?

I’m just looking forward to being able to play. Pre-Covid, I had a two hour each way commute, five days a week. For. Eight. Years.

Post-corona, that’s become once a week, max. So no more getting in at 6:30 or 7:00, then having to worry about getting my dinner cooked and eaten, then a shower before getting to the club with enough time to actually get a game in.

Oh no, sweet reader, not these days! Clock off at four, have a leisurely dinner, can shower during lunch break, then a merry meander up to the club for opening.

And Crusade. What a lovely format to help ease a long lapsed gamer back into the fold, where he can actually make use of the models he never stopped buying.

Fed up of Scalpers? But still want your Exclusives? Why not join us?

I'm just hoping the wishy thinking of the plan coming together is an actual thing rather quarter truths peddled by vapid cheerleaders who really do know better but must appease daddy geedubs lest they get the hose

Snark aside I'll give it a look in 6 months or so and go from there

I also second Docs just wanting to play something as The Event has done something to my grey matter that I might be missing real people

First and foremost, I am looking to get these sweet looking models on a table:

Spoiler:

I have been getting a lot of painting done this year, and I want to show it off in some games.

Second, I was very lucky to find a group of like-minded gamers and a FLGS that always delivers on the Friendly. So I am excited that once Covid settles down to meet and hang out with them. Each of them have also been working on their armies so I am super keen to see what they have accomplished. And I am sure by the time that happens, 9th ed 40k will have solidified some. Even if it hasn't, I am confident we'll find solutions until it does.

I was never one for ITC, but I am interested in trying out the 9th edition missions and seeing how they change up playing the game itself. My group usually stuck to pretty basic mission types, so this may be a real adjustment for us. Me in particular, as I am probably the most traditionalist in the way I play miniatures wargames.

I'm most excited about seeing what happens with Crusade going forward. The podcast Warhammer Community put out a few weeks ago with Stu Black had some tantalising hints for what we could look forward to in the future, that what we got in the book was just the barest minimum to get people started in Crusade.

I'm already five games into Crusade. The system has incredible potential, and it sounds like GW is dedicated to keeping it fully supported, which is more than what they've done with "campaign" systems in the past.

Not that excited about 9e generally; most of it feels like they're just keeping most of the things I didn't like about 8e. Kind of looking forward to my Deathwatch getting some attention but also nervous about how they might screw it up (turning them into a mini-Codex like the MT and not actually giving us any of the newer models, for instance).

has to be a solid update for Eldar for me. They really need it. New models, more viable options, less jank. I don't want to spam anything, just give me some good options.

Looking forward to coronavirus lockdown ending so I can call out in the street, “you, boy, what edition is this?” And reading my codex and crusading, and hopefully finding the desire to build a tyranid army. Also to finally having a mostly painted army. I must be the slowest painter in the world....

I am excited because for once I am not entering a new edition with a giant backlog of unpainted and unassembled models. And the armies I have seem like they may actually be competitive so really don’t have to buy anything either.

I don't know, I bet I have you beat. What's your record for having an unfinished army paint-wise (excluding bases)?

I'm excited for the Crusade system, going to try and get a 50 power Guard force done for this, a new Guard and Knight codex with more Crusade guff thrown in and in general hoping for more campaign books a-la Vigilus.

Agree. crusade is the best thing they have done for narrative play since ever. It feels like the have scrounged together the best bits from 8th edition's random bits of narrative rules and put them into a proper framework.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

Not counting 5 years of geographic isolation from my models, they are just base coated still XD I think I am going on a whole year now. I still intend to hit em with a wash and highlights... I find painting goes from relaxing to frustrating erratically on account of my shaky hands when it comes to details.

Excited for their seemingly “no sacred cows” approach to rules this time, for example W2 Marines and changing Flamer ranges instead of just adding Stratagems etc. Bodes well for changes that fit into the new design space better.

The missions so far have been MUCH better than Maelstrom’s “oh bad cards guess I lose” and seen some really nice manoeuvring play, so be interested to see how much variety extra mission packs can bring.

Excited for the return of Transports! Our group has got a lot out of them so far and weapon changes may boost them further.

Largely just happy it’s the same game, but also everything is new again, and that everyone is enjoying the games more so far.

I think Stu Black's history with being a passionate Necromunda player is a big driving force why the new Crusade system is being developed.

In the recent podcast, one if his other mission briefs for 9th was to break up the overt emphasis on a napoleonic wargame paradigm (this army comes from one edge of the board, the opponent comes from the opposite edge and they meet in the middle), which is why the reserve deployment rules were changed to reflect a more "modern warfare" style of flanking and larger forces moving into position around the engagement zone etc.

I have yet to play my first game of 9th, but am already excited to see how flank reserve deployment will shake up the game. I was even thinking of using a 4'x4' square as a table size for smaller games just to emphasize the flanking more, as all table edges are then equidistant from the center of the board.

40k always has claimed to be all about narrative gaming but never had anything noteworthy outside of players making their own rules. This is the first time they actually invest energy into making 40k narrative gaming possible without the players doing 90% of the work.

Oh, and if you really like flanking that much, don't shrink the table. You can screen table edges to secure them, a smaller board makes makes screen out all table edges easier, preventing the exact thing you are trying to archive.
