Title says it all really!

I don’t play AoS currently, but I’m ever tempted... Something I’d like to try is build
a STD army with a single unit of Dragon Ogors, because that was totally a thing in WFB, and I think it’d look cool.

Can I even do that though? I’ve got to admit, AoS list-building melts my head

Short answer: Yes (Slaves to Darkness can take Beasts of Chaos as Allies).

Cool! But as part of a detachment, per modern 40k parlance, or a single unit, per allies in 2nd Edition 40K?

In a 2k pt game you can have up to 400pts worth of allies in your list. So you could have several units of D-ogers if they'll fit..

AoS doesn't have detachments like 40k does, per say. There's your army, & much like in the past, how many of certain unit types (Leaders/Battle Line, Artillery, Behemoths & allies) you can/must include is based on the size of game your playing.

Within your army though you might have several Warscroll Battalions if you have enough units of certain types. Each Batallion gives some perks.
For ex; right now I'm building some Daughters of Kaine. If I have 1 Bloodwrack Medusa, two units of Blood Sisters, & 2 units of Blood Stalkers I can group them together as a "Temple Nest".

Don't forget the rule that says that only one out of every four units included in an army can be an allied unit still appliesin Pitched Battles.

Your idea of having a unit of Dragon Ogors go along with a StD army will work perfectly; it is exactly what the army building of AoS is designed to enable.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I didn't. It's lumped into the part about "if they'll fit". If the OP wants the rules in detail they can read the rulebook.

Keep in mind you only use rules on warscroll with no faction specifc rules for allies. Were i to use lumineth allies for stormcast no 2 units fight when seiected, no aetherquarts, no faction specific spell lore.

Not sure have dragon ogres any relevant rules they would lose though.

Honestly, "if they fit" is pretty vague and I'm not entirely sure that the OP would be aware of it since it's separate from the main ally rules.

Thank you all for your responses!

I had it in my head that Battalions were like detachments in 40K, i.e. compulsory in matched play, which led me to think the only way to include *any* Beasts in a STD army was as separate Battalion.

Hmm... now to plot

Thinking of them as Formations from 7th but your army still has to follow the AoS Force Organization Chart. Leaders, Battleline etc helped me.
