Hi,
I am new to epic and have just got my minis however have no idea what the most common base size is for infantry. The rule book on epic UK states that as long as it is over 10mm and under 40mm it doesn't matter but am wondering what is the most common bases?
I have seen a lot of the 12mmx40mm with 5 units on, which I think is what the later official epic minis came with, but have also seen a lot of images with circle bases. Have seen very few images with the space marine edition square bases.
Also what do people use for bases? Suppose the main advantage to using round is I would just use some blank unused bases from other minis.

On a side note is advised to put vehicles on a bases? Think I might just to protect little overhanging bits when stored.

You will find most people use the 5 man strip bases to "rank" their units. occasionally they will use a round 5 slot base.

I play a different version using the epic scale minis so i like to use the rectangular flames of war bases to make bigger units

Here are some examples of the normal bases-

All of my vehicles are also on flames of war rectagles

Depends on which edition you're speaking about. Epic Armageddon, which Epic UK uses, is pretty agnostic on what you ought to use as long as it is no more than 40 mm in any direction, no less than 5 mm in any direction and at least 20 mm in one direction. Squares, rectangles, round, anything goes. There are mechanical advantages for various base types, like covering more area or fitting more units into melee neatly, but those tend to be a wash.

Go with what you like aesthetically, pretty much. Same with bases on vehicles, use them if you like them.

My Astartes are on 20x40 mm rectangles because I like to create little dioramas on all of them and I had a bunch of Renendra plastic bases at home when I made them, while my Mechanicum walks on round, metallic washer plates I bought wholesale from the local hardware store.

Cool. Thank you for the info and links. Do like the uniformity of the rectangles so will definitely be going with them then.
Might do the same as you Sherrypie and put them on 20mm. It is nice to have a bit of a story going on round them.

I have gone for a mix for Epic: Armageddon; have used square 20mm bases for Terminators (just imagine them teleporting or filing out of a Land Raider in tight formation) and Orks as you can imagine them being in a mob, but 40x10mm rectangular bases for most other squads.
But that's the great thing, there isn't a hard and fast rule for base dimensions and I don't think really any advantage for using one over another.

I haven't based my vehicles, but again that is a person preference. Have seen lots of based vehicle units for the game which look great. Like you say it does help add a bit of protection, and you can do things like magnetise the bases to help with storage and transportation.

As a heads-up for anyone that is after them, Vanguard Miniatures have recently got stock in of their 40 x 12mm bases (long strip ones).
Get 'em while they're hot, these things seem to sell out in no time at all!
