Hey all. Just wondering if anyone knows of any chapter approved rules from 3rd ED in terms of throwing grenades and stuff.9

Off the top of my head throwing grenades as an attack is was dropped from 3e deliberately while they were streamlining for larger scales. I don't think they came back at all before 7th.

Throwing grenades wasn't possible from 3rd-5th. 6th reintroduced this feature but only allowed a squad to throw a SINGLE grenade each turn in order to speed up play.

Idk what happened in 7th-8th.

I’m aware of the fact that it wasn’t a rule in the 3rd-5th ed rulebooks. I was just wondering if they ever did a grenade chapter approved. The standard grenade rules were always my most hated aspect of 4-5th ed. Thats one of the main reasons why 6th ed is my fav ed.

I own two chapter approved compilations from 3rd. None of those two books address throwing grenades.

There may have been something in an obscure White Dwarf.

There were trial vehicle and combat rules presented if memory serves. And definitely some interesting alternative “background accurate” rules for Daemons (such as universal Night Sight, as they saw souls, not light).

Grenades may have been in there, but I couldn’t say for sure.

No rules ever for throwing grenades in 3rd, grenades were used in close combat, I remember something about frag grenades and cover - I think if you charged without frag grenades into cover you went last in combat, with them it reverted to initiative step... Something like that.

Krak grenades and melta bombs were only used against vehicles (the target needed an armour facing value) as an alternative to combat attacks.

Then plasma grenades and stikk bombs etc etc performed their own functions similar to the above...

Only Chapter Approved article dealing with grenades I can remember is the one with the smoke/blind grenade rules, but that just gave an infantry unit smoke launchers, it didn't let you throw a frag grenade as a blast weapon.

Grenades were a very slow play aspect of 2nd ed, even by 2nd ed standards (variable range based on user strength, random scatter for misses, placement of multiple overlapping templates, rolling to determine if partially covered models are hit - and so on), to the best of my knowledge grenades as a weapon got cut and is likely why they are still 1 per unit except under exceptional circumstances.

In 3rd edition frag grenades weren't a weapon, just a tool to remove the cover bonus for an enemy unit and fight simultaneously.

Krak grenades (and all the other anti tank equivalents) were a close combat option that only worked against vehicles: units attacked and hit normally and then every model equipped with those kind of grenades could use the grenades profile (S6 +D6 or better) for one of the hits they scored. Just one hit per model using grenades.
