Curious what products you all use to add dusty and rusty effects to your models? Even better if it adds texture was well!

I'm playing with the green stuff world liquid pigments at present. Happy with the results from them. If you want to add texture, just mix a bit of baking powder into the colour you are starting with.

I just use regular old acrylic paint applied with various different techniques. I don't think there's any real need the buy special products.

They look great. I think your tables would look so much nicer though if you based your miniatures properly!

I like to use dry pastels as pigment powder for my own weathering effects. You can go the easy route and buy some AK pigments and fixer but I find if you're trying something new, getting a cheaper set to see how you get on is generally a good idea in this kind of hobby.

They grind up nicely with some sandpaper and can be applied dry and fixed in place with matte varnish or white spirit or can be applied wet with water and sealed after to maintain the look. They also have the potential to give added texture when applied wet or depending on how fine you grind them up.

Here are some examples of their use:

These are a bunch of orcs (and a LOTR Uruk-hai that I use as a half-orc in AD&D). I did the rust effects on the weapons and shields just with thinned down brown and orange acrylic paints.

Start with brown, thinned down, stipple it on in thin dabs and work up to bright orange making the area smaller and smaller each time. Then go back with some metallic paint and pick out the scratches and edges where the rust would be worn off by use.

Depends how much detail you're after, but for rust, I love Ryza Rust drybrush paint and Mr. Weathering Color rust, too. The Mr. Weathering Color stuff can easily be used for dusty effects, too - I have some of their sand tone stuff and it's great for desert bases!
