I remember...
It's great as a tech-demo, but they look incredibly vulnerable while in-flight. I think using it for paramedics is a better idea (until they can arm or armour it).

I'm sure they'll find uses for as is, while developing more combat suitable variants.

Hah, the vulnerability was the first thing that came of my mind as well. However, routine boarding inspections should not really be done under fire. If they normally do it by roping down from a helicopter, then that is just as vulnerable. The jet pack version of the manoeuvre would seem to be less resource intensive compared to helicopter operations.

Pretty sure if a boarding action is required, a Naval vessel will be able to lay down better suppressing fire than say, pirates.

Exactly what I thought of. Pretty sure that is the same company in both of these. Looks like the same design.
What they really need to do to make it a more practical thing is to separate the front thrustors from your hands, freeing them up to do other things. Perhaps some arms that extend from the backpack under the users arms, then you have some computer assisted auto adjustment based on how the user shifts their body weight. Or at the very least if you can't use your hands for something else in flight you can quickly drop the thrustors and switch to a weapon.

I missed that. That is helpful for sure. Though long term I am sure the goal should be towards handless flight control.

They flew one from the solent over to the Isle of Wight as test for a "long flight". The guy amanged it in one go & topped out at 60MPH. I ahve to say that's very impressive step forward. Gravity even offers flight courses to try and "take off" with thier idea into the mainstream (could not resist)
Do you guys think jetpack racing could/would be a thing in the near future ? Would you watch it ? (they could use drones for camera work!)
I really hope this technology gets some serious development.

@archive, as far as I know, the endurance on these is still very limited (I.e. a few minutes). I know they’ve demonstrated hot refuelling, but even so, I can’t see it making a particularly good sport; there’s just not enough time to make for a dynamic race.

Combined jet pack and drone racing. Some kind of macabre combination where the pilot needs to fly the jet pack
And the drone at the same time, on different courses for added fun
Or some kind of relay allowing the jet pack to refuel while the drone does a lap or two.
Or make it an aesthetic sport like the choreographed skydiving done in those big vertical wind tunnels
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RXUwpCUXMQw&vl=en
Either a formation thing, or the drone is used as a videoing platform controlled or programmed to get the best views and the judges use the self-captured footage for judging the competitors.

These have a 10ish minute flight time. That is plenty of time for something interesting to watch.

Yet. Just think how much NASCAR and LeMans has pushed the auto industry forward.

Ten minutes is 3 minutes more than one half of a Rugby Sevens match, and that's a Commonwealth sport.

"Aviation is fine as a sport but for the military it is useless."
Marshal Foch.
Don't judge a technology by its ability in its infancy. You might be surprised what can occur.
Jump pack technology has increased by leaps and bounds (pun intentional) over the last ten years. The jump pack used at the opening of the 1984 Olympiad was as much a gimic of the same capability as the one in Thunderball. The new jump packs have true functionality.
Consider them like power armour, they don't do what you think they do.
If I said 'power armour' you think bullet proofing, a bit like the Astartes. When I think of in power armour is a sealed NBC resistant hard suit that has internal aircon so that you don't have a heavy drop in combat effectiveness simply by wearing it, especially in a hot climate. I think of a suit you can take a soldier and drop them for an emergency response into the arctic or the desert without weeks of acclimatisation. I think of being able to cross rivers in freezing temperatures. I do not expect superior defence against bullets, though significant protection against blast would be realistic, and blast is the biggest killer anyway. Power armour is very practical and very feasible when you remove the blinkers on what it is there to do and think with an open mind.
A jump pack doesn't turn real marines into assault marines. It allows for rescue operations, it allows one or two people in a platoon to get on the deck and set up equipment to get others on board, which can offer combat utility. What it doesn't do is tell people to 'look to the skies for their salvation'. Though who knows what a jump pack can do in another twenty years.

They have already done trials of this tech for mountain rescue in the UK and I'm sure the military will find uses for it, though it might be in more logistical than active warzone applications.
Just like I recall watching a program talking about exo power suits in the army a few years back and they were talking about how its currently basically pointless to even consider it as a battle suit because of any damage or loss of power would result in it being a metal cage holding the soldier at higher risk. However as a loader and supply lifting machine its far more useful for a make shift operations base instead of forklift trucks and the like.
When you can throw on the all-terrain power-suit to help load helicopters from a mobile position instead of having to flatten areas out and prep them for regular vehicles.
Search and rescue over rough terrain with these already has a huge amount of advantages in being able to cover large amounts of ground (or water) very quickly. Sure you can't air lift anyone away, but you can get that first responder on the ground where you need them fast.

Orlanth is right, these kind of things always start off in support roles and gradually move towards the front line as they get more capable and the military learn to use those capabilities. Happened with aircraft, UAVs, etc. and will happen here.

Sadly this is because it gets passed through to people who are thinking modern knight armour blinkers. To make a soldier resistant to modern long arms (not heavy weapons) will require a lot of mass. They would likely have mobility issues and be more vulnerable to artillery and a decent LMG or heavy sniper rifle. So no power armour.
If instead we had power armour that was portable under the weight of the soldier and used the 'power' to aircon it instead of adding waldos for moving heavy plate we would get better combat performance not less. IIRC putting on an NBC suit in temperate conditions reduces combat effectiveness to about 65%, in a jungle that is 5%, and fabric suits are problematic because even sitting down compresses and retards function, so we do need hard suits a bit like 'plate', but bullet proofing is not the intent behind this and I find it odd that people can't see through that.
The Russians can, I have heard double sourced rumours about their new armour suits, and it appears they have learned the above lessons western military thinkers are stubbornly avoiding.

Or you use the power armor to allow the soldier to carry a bigger weapon. Like an LMG instead of an assault rifle, or an HMG instead of an LMG.
