I've just been chatting with a store owner about the new Boyz, and apparently the *old* Boyz kit is being repackaged/moving to a new product code, which seems to imply it'll be sticking around for a while, and the new Boyz will be limited to the Combat Patrol box. Seems like another one to file under "who knows why GW do what they do?" but I guess there's a precedent for this with the Start Collecting AoS Chaos Warriors and the old standalone kit.

Thought it was weird that the "old" Boyz feature quite heavily in the Codex rather than the "replacements", which only feature on the Combat Patrol page, but maybe this goes some way to explaining why that is.

I imagine they still have a lot of the old boyz in the warehouse, which to many are still serviceable models. And then if people want new boyz they can spend the extra on a CP box.

That's somewhat surprising to me, since I don't think Ork vets who want to buy the box to mix around and add the new bits to their collection would be inclined to buy the whole Combat Patrol box, though I guess that might be the intended purpose? To add more since they only expect people to buy the new boyz box (versus the old sculpt which you can get second hand) once?

Over in AoS, they still mix the Storm-of-Chaos Chaos Warriors in with the Start Collecting ones in photographs, although they obviously try to only use the latter when they can get away with it.

To me that does suggest Combat Patrol boxes will be the only way to get them for a while yet.

Not to denigrate your source?

But please take anything said by shop staff with a pinch of salt. What they have isn’t necessarily first hand info, and they might well be pulling your leg.

Other armies that received big updates this edition (Sisters, Marines, Necrons) had Combat Patrols released quite a while after codex and initial waves. I think it's more likely that we'll see this:

Codex out in September alongside new Warboss / Boyz / Deffkopta packaged individually

Second wave in Orktober with stuff like snagga boyz released separately from the big army box

Nov/Dec onwards - Combat patrol after people have impulse bought the new stuff at full price

Here you are – seems pretty legit to me, and I don't see what AW would stand to gain from misinforming anyone over this. https://twitter.com/AlchemistsWorks/status/1425793138275328001?s=20

There's reasonable odds they're monopose and even share a sprue with the megaboss and koptas?

The rumour is the exact opposite, boyz are not getting a replacement.

Boyz were sold out multiple times over the course of 8th though, so their stock can't be that large.

I'd be very surprised if koptas weren't their own set, they would be extremely stupid to make the same mistake twice. MA warboss and new boyz on one sprue though? I could totally see that happening, and it would explain the total lack of options for the MA warboss which should be trivial to add to a character sprue.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

It's not even a rumour, it's someone speculating based on GW saying they will discontinue the current Boyz SKU (which we've already known for a couple of months).

The combat patrol has two identical Boyz mobs but with 1 Warboss. It's pretty unlikely that they share the same sprue. Plus the Boyz and Nob definitely have alternative options so aren't monopose.

I think you misunderstood my use of monopose, I meant in the same style as sisters, where each model must be built in 1 fixed manner bar a head swap or a loadout change. Fixed legs/torso/pose etc

Gathering the Informations.

Monopose is kind of the wrong term for where we've been headed, in my opinion.

It's simpler build structures.

Well, it's not like there's no precedent for updated sculpts of existing minis being locked into a Start Collecting/Combat Patrol Box - the same happened to new Chaos Warriors

I believe that new MA Warboss is combat patrol exclusive, at first.

Boyz however are:
- almost 2 decades old kit
- are not available online
- some sites already list them as "unavailable"

So no, I don't believe boyz will be locked in big box set or they bother reboxing very old kit.

Damn and I bought 2 boxes old boyz for Kill Team, because I thought that they will be discountinued. Oh well....

I hope this is just a sales pitch.

Tell me people that the Meganobz kit will be around for awhile and that their are just reboxing it.

A new box of 10 boyz will be over £30, when would you ever buy 2 boxes of boyz stand alone?

Old boyz are indeed in the 9th edition 40K style boxes from now onwards. Doesn't mean that the new boyz are Combat Patrol exclusive. It does mean that the shop staff was correct about the new product code and packaging.

I KNEW IT! I called it like a month ago.

Just like how they made the new warriors of chaos "start collecting exclusive." Though I had my doubts if they'd do it for a combat patrol

Honestly, I'm fine with it. People who like the old orks can continue to buy. People who like the new ones can try and get them. Everyone wins

Jtst cause they have options doesn't mean they aren' monopose.

Both types of Boyz being available at the same time is not what I was expecting.

I just want that Combat Patrol to come out. It's a good 'un.

That's a real fancy way of saying 'monopose'.

Gw has been having production bottlenecks keeping up with demand. A majority of a kits sales are from the initial release. Putting the newboys, warboss, and deffkoptas in the combat patrol would serve three purposes. First, it lets them bundle in an older deff dread to make more profit, since that kit has long paid for itself. Second, as a higher bundle cost less people will buy the combat patrol at first, so they can allocate more production time to the beast snagga kits for individual release and the other characters and war wagon. Third, when they do release the combat patrol kits separately later, they will get a spike of sales not only from a new kit, but people who waited, rather than just one release that drops off, they can double dip on demand.

My understanding is that GW does this because theres still so many of the old kit sitting on shelves and in inventory that they want to clear out the old inventory before devaluing it by replacing it with a new kit. There doing it in different permutations, etc. - the new Wight King on Skeletal Steed can only be purchased via the Start Collecting Soulblight Gravelords box that features 20 old Grave Guard minis, in that instance it appears they are trying to get people to buy the old minis by bundling it with a new mini that everyone wants, even though everyone knows they have probably already designed a new Grave Guard kit thats in line with the rest of the new skeleton minis, etc. which is just waiting to be released.

Sold out *online*. Doesn't mean its sold out everywhere. Even still, the fact that they sold out a lot in 8th means that they also had to produce a lot more kits in 8th, and its possible they ended up overproducing that last wave and the continuing sales of the kit tapered off leaving them with excess inventory.
