I mod there and its been down for me too.

I know that in the last month or two the owner has spoken of issues of keeping the site going payment wise, especially as many of the real world events and such that he ran dried up over the pandemic period and his real world job is demanding enough that those events might not return as they once were.

That said I wasn't aware of any "its closing now" moment. It might be he's moving it to a cheaper host or system or such.

Somewhat related, TGA facebook page was “archived”:

This group has been archived
An admin paused this group on October 5, 2022. You can't create posts, like, comment or add more members, but you can still view all posts.

For what its worth, I very rarely went to the site in the past year. Faction Specific FB groups/Discords are more up my alley, nowadays.

I remember the admin had the donation counter up at the top and it was astounding how much that forum cost to run, and donations generally remained flat.

If it is full closure its a shame, we'd spoken about potentially moving to another platform or at least giving users another bolt-hole site/discord to link too to migrate over as the community was good.

And yeah running costs were something in the region of £6K a year. Which apparently used to be funded by the events the guy running hte site was organising and running, which all died a death during the Pandemic.

It really would be a shame if TGA never comes back. I enjoyed hanging out there.

That stinks if it's gone for good. I didn't realize how expensive a site like that is to keep going!

Worth paying a $5 or 10/year fee just to avoid having to use Facebook, or Slack or Discord.

TGA quickly became a place where most, if not all, criticisms of GW were crushed by mods in a way that is often less than professional.

So you are left with a board that is over moderated for a game without much excitement.

AoS itself doesn't seem to be in a great design space- I don't know if GW has a plan besides a very general one. Hopefully Slaves to Darkness brings back some excitement.

I think GW would rather use AoS as the umbrella for smaller games like WarCry or Underworlds. Less investment in big army production that obviously isn't making them money (or they would be making more of them).

Eh not really. It was more a focus on having constructive feedback and not allowing almost every thread to devolve into a long series of worn out complaints (many of which are simply repeats of the same complaints people have had about GW for the last 30 odd years). There was a stronger drive to create a community that was more focused on the positive sides of the hobby rather than allowing complaints to run the board. Most clashes occurred when people would choose their language poorly or would continue to complain relentlessly.

I do agree over the last year AoS has gone more quiet than it should have, though I'm not 100% sure why its been the case considering that, I'd argue, its had some fantastic creative freedom and ability on show. It might just be that with a few big 40K armies getting some good updates - Eldar with Chaos and Imperials getting some drip-fed and both building towrad bigger updates and with Squats getting their first models in 20 years (or more) - that its dominated the last year and overshadowed AoS.

Dakka's always been crap for anything other than 40K discussion and TGA's a touch too hugboxy. Facebook and discord is where the best discussion can really be had these days.

I mean say what you will- if the product is good, people will use/buy it. You can blame either AoS or the board itself but one or both are the cause of a lack of performance.

Given that you can find lively boards being run without drops in service for games that aren't even in print, that implies an issue with the board not the game (though obviously a more active game would help!).

Uhh. The problem with the board was that it was too popular. The drops in service were because the owner wasn't paying the increasingly expensive bills.

I love TGA so much, but the website for me has constant pop-ups. Not sure if that is something I can address on my side, but it does not happen on other forums.

I left FB years ago and it was the best thing possible. I cannot think of good that comes from being on that platform. Discord isn't any better than forums it's just a different method of the same thing but you need more software to do it.

TGA was a place that started to become overloaded with people who just spewed toxic comments and negativity towards people who enjoyed the hobby/game until the mods started to stop that. Be careful which side you feel vindicated to be on.

Sadly,.. i'm struggling to find Dakka good for 40k. the 40k Daemon thread is unfortunately mostly complaining and usually positive inquiries get ignored. Outside Dakka it's got the same view as FB.

It's a real bummer and I'm glad TGA is still a good positive place.

Ask people IRL and they generally have one of two responses: "What's Dakka?" or an eyeroll with "Ugh, Dakka".

Out of curiosity, how do you find the relevant Discord servers?

I ask because I've seen an awful lot of people reference Discord as the best place to discuss 40k, AoS or various other games, yet rarely ever do they follow up with a link to the respective servers for such.

My FLGS has one, with an AoS section amongst all of the other games systems that they support.

The rest I found through Facebook and reddit, with a Beast of Chaos centric discord being my most recent discovery.

My local AoS community has one, bit of a psuedo-club thing. Also has a section for Road to Renown, but mainly it's about local gaming.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I run the local AoS Discord server for the town/rough area. I have FLGS store employees/owners in the server, so they can invite people to them if people come in to the stores asking about the games. It's gone alright so far, but having someone with a monetary interest in you coming through their door in a place for discussion can get a bit awkward when certain topics come up.
