My question: When the Emperor's Children finally releases what will it look like?
Of course there's not many people who can answer that question accurately, those who can aren't allowed to. So I guess this just comes down to wild speculation, at least for now. Especially since 10th Edition hasn't been released yet we don't even know for sure what an Emperor's Children army built using the Chaos Space Marines codex will look like. Some of my thoughts / concerns:
Considering we have three dedicated legions release across three editions, we can draw some conclusions which have a high chance of being true for
EC as well:
- You will lose access to almost all units from codex
CSM, barring the basics like rhinos, predators, helbrutes, daemon princes, chaos lords and sorcerers.
- Lucius and
EC will absolutely get new models and will be taller and much better looking than the current ones.
- You will get new
HQs which will be better and more interesting than you bog standard sorcerer or chaos lord
- There might or might not be new terminators.
CSM terminators will likely still be playable, but might have sub-optimal wargear.
In other words - no matter what army you build now it will be unplayable once Codex:
EC hits.
Would I be wasting my time painting up my Cultists and Accursed Cultists with a view of adding them to an Emperor's Children army?
Absolutely. While some flavor of cultists might be part of the
EC,
GW will take measures to make sure that they aren't central to your army. Accursed Cultists are almost guaranteed to be out.
There are some other Chaos Space Marine units I like the look of too. These include:
The Forgefiend
Obliterators (the Venomcrawler is OK but I'd only buy it because it comes in the same box as Obliterators)
Terminators
Havocs
Warp Talons
Would I be safe buying these, or is it likely that they won't be part of the Emperor's Children codex?
If I had to place a bet, I'd place it on everything but terminators not being in the book. Neither forgefiend nor warp talons strike me as particularly slaaneshi and obliterators and havocs have been excluded from
DG and
WE despite their being strong lore support for them.
As I said earlier none of us really knows the answer to this question yet, would be interesting to hear other people's thoughts though.
Long before codex
WE was announce, I told people crying for their own codex to be careful what they whish for and that their current
WE armies will be completely invalidated. They all told me that I didn't know what I was talking about.
Someone who ignores what we know about the transition from
CSM to
TS,
DG and
WE today and buys an army of
EC anyways absolutely deserves to get their whole army invalidated. The only thing we don't know about Codex:
EC is what completely new units it will contain.
Of course one option would be to build a Chaos Space Marine army with a strong Slaanesh theme, even after the Emperor's Children codex is released. I may end up doing that, depending on how much the EC codex appeals to me.
Since you already know which models you want, just go for a Slaanshi warband like the Flawless Host or one of your own creation. This way you have guaranteed continued support for your army and when
EC is to your liking, just start a second one (or sell your first one).
Also, it's annoying that when we go with a strongly themed Chaos Space Marine army (Death Guard, Thousand Sons or World Eaters) we have little to no choice of Daemons to take. Since those armies lean so heavily to one Chaos god I would have thought they should have access to that god's Daemons. I guess GW didn't want to dilute the Chaos Daemons Codex though.
They do have access to their corresponding daemons though? Both in 9th and in 10th.
