Obviously, we’ll see what actually happens with the codex.
My understanding is that they are going to add new detachments. So the faction wide rules will be the same, but different detachments will spin things to let you focus your army. Like what the different colors of Space Marines have now.
So we might get a whole “subterranean assault” detachment with rules and strats that highlight the burrowing bugs, and make them a lot more appealing for play.

ah ok, so we may see mawloc can join a unit of nids i would have thought, thus soaking up some incoming attacks unless close range / precision etc.
tbh its a cool model so i kinda want to make it work, but point for point old one eye lumbering up with the core sounds a better option, although Mawloc is an interesting distraction for the enemy while i can get into position, especially if the dice are in favour and it can make a charge when appearing!

It's cheap, can deepstrike, has a funky MW-rule and has a ton of attacks.
It's pretty good. Not the best monster in the Index but def. not bad.

Depending how/where you are looking, don’t forget it’s the same kit as the trygon. It was also part of the old start collecting from before the last one, so you might be able to get an old dusty one bundled with a broodlord and some stealers.

Gw flat out said early up codexes coming showing roadmap to spring 2024.
So new datasheets, net detachments with new enchantments, new stratagems, new point costs...
Index are get you by until codex comes

Never underestimate GW's ability to completely screw everything up. There have been far more awful 'Nid Codices than good ones, so their track record shouldn't give us much hope.

i think i'd get more chance in stores if im passing, online i've exhausted my usual go to places, not a huge fan of genestealers tbh, the 2 wounds is nice now but... there is always better options and i use leapers as my fast moving mob and i think i'd rather have more of them than stealers. plus there like £5 thx to the cavernous amounts of them on eBay with Lathiathon box sets being split and sold.

I've had really good luck with mine. It doesn't have the same damage output as a Trygon but it's quite a bit cheaper and with 10" move if you rapid ingress in a position in which it can not be blown off the table before your turn comes back around it's really good at clearing light infantry off backfield objectives. Things like gretchen or guardsman. However you could do the same thing with a unit of ravaners for about half the cost.

Looking at the original Index Card?
On its own, the Mawloc is no great shakes. But. With a 12” range throwing out Mortal Wounds? It definitely has its uses when supporting other units, but it’s something you’d need to plan ahead for.

It gets the 12” MW burst when it comes in from Deep Strike. But also does not get a rule altering how that happens. So you need to position it outside of 9” but catch as many units within 12” as you can. Obviously you may be able to get lucky, but are probably looking at 2 units most of the time, 3 if you get lucky. With its footprint/base, that might be had to line up just right.
The Trygon might be more expensive, but if you want to field a giant death noodle (because honestly, they look awesome) it looks like you get much better returns on your points investment. At least on paper, I’ve not had a chance to get mine to the table.

It’s a little odd, because the Trygon does get an exception. He can pop up just outside 3”, but if he does he can’t charge. If you could do that with the Mawloc’s 12” murder bubble, you could hand out a massive amount of MWs. And then it wouldn’t mater if you were shot off the table, as you’d already done enough damage to justify your existence.
Trygon is +35 points more expensive.
They have identical statlines.
Mawloc has the MW ability.
Trygon has the option to pop up close. Can’t charge, but has a shooting attack (not great, but there) More importantly that kind of precision DS can do things like put it’s 4 OC onto an objective, and is a lot harder to screen out.
Trygon hits like a truck, with 12/3+/9/-2/3 claws, while the Mawloc’s claws are 16/3+/8/-2/1. On anything more then grots or gaurdsmen it’s not even close. Sure, 4 more attacks are good for clearing chaff, but 3D vs. 1D means vs any multiwound infantry it’s a pretty dramatic shift. Strength 8 vs. 9 is also a nice breakpoint for hunting vehicles. The distensible jaw is a nice little bonus attack, but not enough to offset the discrepency with the claws.
Looking at the new detachments, nothing leaps out at me that shifts the paradigm. Now I’ve only had the book for less then a day. Something might be hiding in a corner somewhere. But if someone wants to snake up an army, I’d recommend agains the mawloc and fill that tunneling place in your heart with a trygon.

It’s definitely the D1 on the talons that puts me off the Mawloc. Nids are hardly short on amusing ways to kill basic infantry.

If they were D2 I could see maybe. You could still cash out MEQ like the giant hungry maw it is, but leave the trygon room to be better vs. 3+ wound elites and vehicles. But as you say, killing GEQ is not a niche we really need to worry about filling. And certainly not worth dedicating a centerpiece level model to do.

Trygon is there for a rapid ingress. For the turn 3 charge where you need. Opponent can screen but it is hard. Automatically Appended Next Post: Trygon is there for a rapid ingress. For the turn 3 charge where you need. Opponent can screen but it is hard.
Actually comparing him a bit he is like a more exspensive SM intersceotor. They too have guns with sustained hits 2 and shooting. This one has OC 4 (while they only have 3.) So perhaps not bother with the rapid ingress. If they don't kill it you can always heoric interweene in their turn.
