The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

Upstate, New York

Welcome all to the 109th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month the topic is: Space Marine. Our classic start to the competition cycle, the ubiquitous space marine. GW makes them in many sizes and flavor, and color, but we are not restricting ourselves to the adeptus astartes. Any space-y marine-y minis will do. Do you fight for some elite unit out in the inky void of space? Storm the beaches on alien worlds? Visit exotic new planets, meet the quaint local aliens, and then kill them? And do it on the bounce? Well grab your gear and get on the ready line, time to paint!

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of March and will end at midnight EST on March 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Looking through the old Book of the Astronomicon a couple of weeks back, I turned a fateful page:

May I direct your attention to the fifth row, far right: Brother Lustgarten. My interest piqued I researched further, and found to my delight that the same miniature had also been released in an earlier incarnation (when names tended to be a bit more literal, as demonstrated by Brother Longun with his long gun, and skull-helmeted proto-chaplain Brother A Skull) as 'Brother Quiff'. It was now clear what I must do:

In the Imperium's darkest hour, Brother Quiff Lustgarten has returned.

crocus are plum, buttercups yellow..
neither of these are like the next fellow.. which spacemarines swear..
is certainly, surely a clear part of their..:
His eyes are quite wonky, his pupils are orange and big?
Is this' oh so surely a spacemarine rig? Inside stuck a monkey?
Does Nevelon care? The rusty machine makes a foreboding hum.

Will likely sit this one out, as we are moving house around week three of this month, so won't have much time to paint. Not that my xeno scum self has any marines around anyway (20 years of wargaming, only one Space Marine painted?!).

Excited to see what everyone else is doing though, so just dropped a comment to keep on track with this one

I'll be entering a 1980's Terminator squad. The first three are prototype designs before the Citadel studio had decided what terminator marines really ought to look like. The fourth one is a plastic terminator from the 1989 1st edition of Space Hulk, and the last one is a terminator sergeant, also from around 1989, I believe.

Going to either get back to painting my Raven Guard, or I might possibly paint up some Grey Knights I've had sitting on my shelf for approximately 13.7 billion years...

I'd like to repair/repaint my old finecast Calgar & honour guard if I have time between painting new minis. They require some tlc (bent/broken weapons, wrong base sizes and other modelling mistakes from when they were first built) and a fresh paintjob that helps bring out the detail a bit more. No proof pic just yet as I need to strip the paint first.

Vive la révolution!

Do you hear the miniaturists sing?
Singing the song of angry painters?
It is the music of the people
Who will not paint marines again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is art about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond those Space Marines
Are there other models you long to see?

Do you hear the miniaturists sing?
Singing the song of angry painters?
It is the music of the people
Who will not paint marines again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is art about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!

Will you paint all that you can
So that our banner may advance?
Some will finish and some will not (dam)
Will you stand up and take your chance?
Marine helmets on the ground
Will cover the bases all around!

Do you hear the miniaturists sing?
Singing the song of angry painters?
It is the music of the people
Who will not paint marines again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is art about to start
When tomorrow comes!

You suddenly realise that you love prizes.. and nod after which the quiz radio takes note and continues:

"*BAM!* Poll time! click clack ding ding tic tac click clack.."

Q!: What is Mougg'r-Mek's Mekh?!?

Option 1: Its.. a mek?

Option 4: I know!.. it has to be a Moug!
Option 5: Hold it!.. it's certainly a Mougmek!

Well, here's a proper story to this "Spacemarine" entry! You better read it because it will give you the abillity to conjure wishing stars for an entire day, evening not included.

-

DA STORY TO DA MOUGG'R-MEK'S MEKH.
Spoiler:

"toopid nubgoths" Klumpgug thought to himself having witnessed the self-krumping of Oothed (see the blunt Ork story of Oothed's three reincarnations) ..
Why would any self respecting Ork think of speeding through their perfectly useful current Orky form.. wasting the potential of maximizing the genetic output for that next incarnation..

That couldn't be the way to become a proper Orkgoth at all.. no .. amassing engineering-skill and applying it to whatever material one could find to build the ultimate Orky warmachines.. that had to be how you became an Orkgoth!

Mougg'r-mek Klumpgug braced his prized wrench in both his hands and held it up in front of the blazing fifty Suns shining down on the roof level of the ruined building.., below still smoldering the equally searing remains of whatever Ghazkghul Nuka actually had been..
"Da roundy ting of lifez!" Klumpgug yelled.. echoing into the distance, probably alerting hostiles..

"Me go make da biggaz krumpiest mekgoth evir gruk'd abut!" "Me didsa beffoh!"
"Me go do diz abut!"

-

"Lat iz needz pahdz"
Hu'ug Thu'mog-Og noted, trying to help.. seeing the potential in Klumpgug.
"Me iz gib da pahdz if latz mek id git pahdz lata fer me in retuhnz".."beettaa pahdz"

-

Klumpgug understood.. Hu'ug was practically giving him a lend with interest.. but hey.. atleast the parts would be supplied and he wouldn't have to wait and scravenge them bit by bit from the wilderness..
The first Orky bank was created right there.

-

"wuz lat gotz?" Klumpgug inquired, inspecting the merchandise at Hu'ug's stash (read: pile of rubbish)
"nub dat" Hu'ug denied.. "ova dahr" and pointed to the far south where apparently some fighting was going on, previously unnoticed by the entertainment of prospects..

"daz nub ebin latz" Klumpgug swung his wrench into the air frustrated.. "daz oomie pahdz"
"Me shuw'd you dat pahdz ..so me iz dib an me gib dat; lat.. harhar" Hu'ug celebrated smugly.. using his higher intellect and banking experience of two minutes.

"Lat gug" Klumpgug yielded as they trotted down the ashy concrete stairs to head toward the fighting for the parts.. that is.. in the case anything with parts had met its demise..

-

At the combat site a group of tyranids was trying to spray down a compact group of Spacemarines with acid.., effectively because the marines had been forced into a tight formation around a single towering warmachine..
It looked somewhat grim.. if not for the power of their guarded asset..
"Sarge Jubil!" .."We can take them.. I can see my daughter again after I am relieved from base today!"
"Soldier!.., yes you can!.. she will be so happy! .. will you bring a present?"
"Yes!.. I bought a tyranid plushie!.. I can't wait!"
The soldiers rallied in their fight..

-

"wuz dat den.., gug nuf?" Hu'ug wondered aloud as the duo of Mek's came nearer to the match.. seeing the warmachine for what it was.. a hulking dreadnought going strong despite having been stripped of its paint..
"iz perfet.. daz me faverid paintzjobz" Klumpgug cheered..

-

"Careful Sarge!.. there's more tentacle things comin from uphill!"
"I spotted them but thanks soldier!.. "

-

"me tinkz dat luk betta in greenz" Hu'ug pouted.. scanning through a looted map of colorpalette schematics..
"nub uh.. dat luk betta in az iz" Klumpgug insisted.. "makz me gruk of da skerpyahd (scrapyard base Klumpgug owned prior to it blowing up entirely)

-

One by one the Marines were taken down to the ground and pulled in by tentacles, if not outright blasted with goo, eating away their armor..
"I've been hit Sarge!.. ..its not too bad .. I.. I can still go on!"
"What is your name soldier!.. I won't let you go down!"
"It's Bentley sir!"
"Billy Bentley!"
"Keep it up Billy, we're getting you home!.. your daughter is waiting!"
"Yes sir!"

-

"wuz abud puttin un sum hedk'nahz on dat?".."iz gunna sieh gug an proppa gothy" Hu'ug flipped the pages of a looted guide of home decorations..
"Me kin sieh dat yub.. maybez dat me do.." .."kin alzo addz mor dakka?.. frum latz stahz.." Klumpgug conversed..
"dat tribut lat mor".. "gib alzu mor pahdz den" Hu'ug insisted.

-

"More from the hills Sarge!... .. ..Sarge?!"
"That drasted spawn got me through the window.. Billy!.. I don't have much time!.. you.. you must survive!.. I will open the hatch and .. .. Billy listen to me!.. ughh.. you must enter the dreadnought and run.. run Billy.. Run to your daughter.."
"No Sarge!!.. We can go meet her together!"
"Billy.. I'm opening the hatch.. I'm covered in corrosive spit Billy.. it's .. it's not a pretty sight! .. It's over for me Billy!.."
"Sarge.. oh my god!.. Sarge!"
"Get.. in .. the ..dreadnought Billy.. .. you.. have. ..someone to ..go home...t... ughh.."
"SAAARGE!!.. .. .."
"I.. I will try"

-

"Iz dat mekh pahdzy nuf for lat.. iz open nuw.." Hu'ug noted..
"Harhar..".."Yub.. iz open!.. oomies tupid.. levin da dohz open fer da takinz"

-

"..w..who are.. " .."Hey!"..

-

"Git in da gorkpit harhar".. "wuz bud me?".."Git on da ahm?"
"Da ahm iz flipz abud.." .. "nub id izn't!"
"den stop pushin da butonz"
"Me nub gruk diz butonz!.. oomie.. buttonz"
"LAT STOP DA TUR'LIK AHM".. ..".. lat.."
"zorry.."
"tuup ahm"..

-

Billy sat surrounded by incoming tentaclous Tyranids.. watching how two Orks made off with the dreadnought, moving improperly and clumsily into the distance.. its left arm swinging up and down, while one of the two orks held on tight on top of it..

He knew.. he was never going to see his daughter again.. but atleast he was going to die with a recording of the weirdest vehicle theft ever captured onto his retinal cam.

As Billy could swear he was going to be strangled or sprayed with poisons any moment.. he heard an increasingly loud bouldering and rumbling closing in .. while the Tyranids started to skeet off in a panic..

Fin. (for now)

And ofcourse my 2nd pic being a wip. (that juggerthing is pretty weird with all its movable parts)
And yes, It will be more Orky, and yes there will be a lot of rust.
And yes a second Ork will be involved, eventually.

p.s. Ork on the right side of the IMG is not part of this entry but the preexisting Mougg'r-mek I will recreate as the pilot.

Poor Billy.
"scanning through a looted map of colorpalette schematics.. "
This line gave me interesting vision of a story of an Orc Boss with a color swatch ring on a crusade all over the galaxy to find and loot the correct color paint for his truck. And the truck is a patch work of various colors.
Similarly to Greasus Goldtooth campaign for a perfect recipe

Right then, got my painting area back, so I'm going to try and make a start on this. Still not decided exactly what I'm doing, but I'll most likely be painting up one or some of these kitbashed 30k Raven Guard Consularis/Praetor. From the left, there's a Delegatus, two champions, a Praevian, Praetor, Vigilator/Pathfinder, another two champions/Vigilators/Pathfinders that I'm painting up as duellist Sharrowkyn and sniper Sharrowkyn, a Moritat and lastly a Primus Medicae/Apothecary. No clue which one/ones I'm going to do, so requests or suggestions are very welcome.

Or, as stated previously, I might ditch them all and do a Grey Knight kill team...

Ok, I know this is 6 models including the Good Boy, but I’d like to see Nevelon fight against public opinion on that one…

When a Crimson Fist dies, his battle brothers cut their palms and run them through Brother Quiff’s hair to ensure the roots never show in his red stripes.

Primaris was ready to roll in the 37th Millennium, but Belisarius Cawl insisted on delaying the project until he was absolutely certain none of the bio-upgrades would interfere with Brother Quiff’s hair in any way.

When the Great Rift threatened Rynn’s World, the decisive factor in delaying the daemonic onslaught long enough for Bobby G to arrive with reinforcements was the Slaaneshi daemons refusing to attack Brother Quiff, even while he was wholesale slaughtering them, since they couldn’t believe anyone that gorgeous wasn’t on their side.

The hero of Rynn's World, the man they call Quiff.

Well, here's a proper story to this "Spacemarine" entry! You better read it because it will give you the abillity to conjure wishing stars for an entire day, evening not included.

I was going to let him die there but then thought that would be way too sad so I left the ending open -_-

Also, Hu'ug loots every map and schematic he can find, he's not just a mek, he's also a bit of a weirdboy due to the coil strapped to his head.
If it has doodles on it Hu'ug considers it a legitimate blueprint.

I have decided that I will not include Hu'ug to the kitbash because I couldn't find a body that would work nor have a spare coilhead other than that of a Wazbom blaztajet which will have to be Hu'ug's future personal story.
The rumbling thing at the end of the story will be something new, something big, something.. very..big.
(Which will take many weeks to paint I bet) and is also left for a future episode of the Nite-Orks/Un(dead)Orks.

"Why would i be lying for Wechhudrs sake man.., i do not write fiction!"

My first entry to the Dakka PC

Technically I'm an Eldar painter, but since I had a small Space Marine army back in the early 90:s (before I left 40k for almost two decades) I thought it might be time to paint up another one?!

I tried to find a decently priced, but still fun, mini to paint as a one off so ended up with a Primaris Lieutenant with storm shield. Just arrived in the post so hoping to get started this week. I am notoriously slow when painting so hope I finish it before the end of the month!

Proof pictures taken during the test assembly.

Cheers,
Oskar

Welcome Oskar! Always good to see another Eldar painter!

Don't worry, I'm also an extremely slow painter, I'm always asking for extensions to the deadlines at the end of the month. And sometimes I even meet those extensions!
