Welcome all to a bonus round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Once finished, entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces. For the bonus round the votes are not added to the league table, but internet fame is forever! (or so they tell me)

This summer the topic is: Centerpiece. Have a project in mind as the capstone of an army? The big guy in charge with all his crazy detail? A fortress for them to call home? Or some other massive project that you know you could never get done in one of our normal monthly competitions? Now is the time to go big. Your entry should be a stand out focal point. Champions, monsters or gods. Strategic battlefields or objectives to control. Earth-shaking war machines or powerful beasts. When your eye scans the room, it lands here. Physical size is not required. If you want to spend all summer free-handing Michelangelo on a 6mm command tank, that’s fine. But so is building a hab-spire for your necromuna gangs to fight in.

Do note that we are not removing the 5 model limit. This is not a “new summer, new army” comp. A commander and his bodyguards or a battlefield tile/section and some scatter terrain are OK, but the focus is on the centerpiece. We will also be relaxing the photo limit to let you get more pictures, but I’m going to be a little more firm in the format of submission to make life easier for me to compile the vote thread. More details on that later.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the summer, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 12 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as half of your picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be NOT used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in. This is a bonus round, just bragging rights.

How Long Do I Have?
This Summer bonus rounds begins Memorial Day (May 27th) and will end at midnight EST on Labor Day (September 2nd). After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I know I was going to enter the Glottkin but after finishing an already neckcramp inducing Maggothlord today.. I kindof want to switch it up.. I'll look if I have something else that's big and feeling like a shame to leave on the shelf.

I mean.. I also have a Morkanaut and Wazbomjet boxed still.. and a lot of new Votann boxes..
We will see..

I was actually planning to sit this bonus challenge out, since I don't really do big stuff... but as we say in the Emperor's Children, f--- it.

The main drive of this side-quest is to do those big things sitting on the shelf staring at you.

Let’s find the motivation to get them done together!

Wow, the keeper of secrets and Ridgehauler are going to be great, especially considering the authors I'll do something similar to the Ridgehauler, but I have to remember where I hid it

Here is my entry: the Colossus crane and the Munitorium Container. I printed it some time ago, but its complexity scared me . I started to paint the cab interior, but now it is painted with base again to enter the competition. So far it looks like this:

but it will (I hope) look like this :

The crane model was downloaded from here, there is also link to the truck:

Well, this challenge gives me a good reason to finally paint the giant Mr. Potato Head I converted to a stompa. I'd been working on it here and there during college classes, but I'd finally gotten everything together, just have to prime and get started.. There are at least 4-5 major painting areas that need to be done for sub-assemblies. Most notably, I noticed I won't get to the area on his left becaus the gun arm will be in the way- and the choppy arm needs to be glued on with the same wire that holds gun arm..
So.. Fun.. Yeaaaa, let's go with that. And apparently I have a death wish, as I've planned/ have a bit done on a second one, more Gork-Centered (IE the Tater head body it upside-down.. he will also have horns and a mohawk, because: orks!)

I don't know yet if I have the time and inclination to enter. I certainly have tons of viable candidates. Might be a little while before I have a clearer idea if I can commit to something substantial like this.

Well one of the reasons for this is to allow for more time, so you have all summer to decide.

The longer you wait, the less you will have though.

Very true, unfortunately.

I have this froghemoth cast in Reaper's dreadful white PVC. I'm tempted to see if I can make something of it in spite of the material's deficiencies. I imagine it to be an on and off project where I spend half the time yelling profanities in the general direction of Reaper's company HQ, something in which all the extra time will come in handy.

Ribbit.

My beholder for this months other challenge is in white finecast, was going to order another one but canceled it.. the basecoat (amsterdam acryllic) hardly stuck, easily tears off when touching the model.. so I used varnish over it -_-

I bet there's people on here who do but I cannot imagine actually liking 3d printed mini's.. I have new found respect for GW going hard plastics.

Yeah, I've had my share of frustration with metal models in the 90s. Even with less detail at the time, I was happy for every model GW made in plastic. The plastic revolution of the early 00s was great to see.

With Reaper's white PVC my main concern is that that the painted model may turn glossy and sticky. I don't know if it's the spray primer, the varnish or both. I bought a handful of these models when they were reasonably new to give the material a try and... it wasn't great. I got the froghemoth out, oh, I think a year and a half ago. See if maybe letting the stuff air out makes a difference. I just haven't had the motivation to do anything with it in the meantime. You can see it's still just dry-fitted.

The challenge might be the right time to fiddle with it and get in in paintable condition. I reckon if I feel motivated to do that over the next month, I'll enter it. Two months should be plenty to paint it.

It looks great as a model though.. I've seen many awesome casts but refuse to work with it.

Back when I first started with WH I bought some models unaware of them being finecast in a batch, eventually returning multiple ones to the store -_-
(such as the jabberslythe and the cockatrice, cool models but the finecast was impossible to glue for some reason.. maybe there's special glue for that material but I tried everything I could think of.. even builders glue, wood glue, nothing worked..)
Oh btw your entry made me think of a frogess from jade cocoon 2 for some reason.. although that thing has wings and one leg.

I'll be doing a 'Saurus Old Blood on Carnosaur', I think.

Unless it turns out to be easier than I expect, in which case, I've got an Imperial Knight that I built/converted a couple of years back, but have been too scared to paint. I may give that a try instead.

My plan for the Seraphon models was to just build them and paint them as they come. No conversions or kitbashing, just keeping it simple and fast.
But that carnosaur's head just looks way too short to me. And I'm going to struggle to avoid lengthening it a bit!

You could paint both the carnasaur and the knight as a diorama. Giant mecha vs. dinosaur is a classic pairing!

I gave cleaning mold lines off a tentacle a try. I don't care for the experience...

Best case scenario seems to be that I'll take ten or so minutes every other day and kinda sorta get rid of the stupid things over the course of two weeks. It's not something I want to subject myself to every day.

I actually got more cleaning and assembly in than I thought. I had to put my monthly entry aside because the pot with the skin color I hadn't used in over ten years had dried out. Which left me with nothing better to do than to take on those mold lines. Tentacles are done. Head is done. On to the body and legs.

I'll have to see how things look after that, but I expect the next step is some gap filling.
