How do!
The cheeky scamp is back, this time with a Snowman.
Also, fairly sure the twigs in the Snowman solve a rumour engine?

Fun little idea there. All looking good but I would rather that they did not make the gritty texture on the fur, thats the kind of thing that looks better painted.

That's a fun mini. I like that you can leave the snowman's head off too. Might grab him if he's not outrageously expensive.

Well, you see, he gives out gifts, which is socialism, and therefore communism, and therefore revolutionary. Also a star symbol. Also red = communism, and Santa Claus from the Coca Cola ads wears red. Pretty sure that's it.

Red Gobbo was originally a Gorka Morka special character.

he started as a gorkamorka character, but has been a 40k character for much longer than gorkamorka was ever a thing. it's like saying Mortarion and Angron are Epic characters because that's where their models debuted

Do note Santa clause comes from Sinterklaas ( st.nicholas) + father winter (papa noel of the rus), the first being a patron saint of thieves and seafarers and the second being a sort of hyperborean personification (of Woden/Odin).
All in all, this has much to do with shamanism ( st. Nicholas being the christenization of this) which is rife in the siberean area (tengrism etc) as much as in the baltic culture (all the way down to the turkic/magyar Taltos).
So I find the carry-over between the original red-army red-gobbo and the modern santaclausesque red gobbo quite logical.
Santaclauses traits are afterall shamanic, and the soviet were built upon a people that enjoyed that very culture.
This new 24 version isn't to my liking though, agreeing also with the too grainy (looks like stonework) fur, also don't really feel the pose, I recently bought the 22nd version and may reserve it for the december chal.

Santa wears red because St. Nicholas was a Catholic Cardinal.

the modern designs for Santa Claus as he's known in pop culture was used heavily in coke ads in the 1930s. it certainly didn't start with them, but it might be fair to say that they played a part in popularizing and standardizing that design

The Red Gobbo was a Gorkamorka character, who was ported to 40K as a Christmas mascot, and then subsequently a different Red Gobbo character (who never got a model) got some books written about him. As far as I'm aware, book Red Gobbo and Christmas Red Gobbo have no relation to one another besides the fact that they're both derived from Gorkamorka Red Gobbo.
And this is while the Necromunda character Phanta Claws, who is explicitly a Christmas-themed character, is sitting right there being ignored.
There's just nothing inherently Christmassy about a mock-Communist revolutionary goblin originally from a dessert planet. And it's even weirder that we're now five or six model iterations deep, and GW just seem to have settled on this obviously being their Christmas mascot every year for some reason rather than changing things up a bit each year (Living Saint Nick, Chaos Bad Santa, a Necromundan mutant delivering (often explosive) presents, A ghoul wearing a Santa outfit etc.)

If I had to guess they want someone in Santa-like red but didn't want an outright Christmas reference.

Ooh, that's a great idea. I wonder if you could build him separate from the base and magnetize it so you could swap him back to a regular base.

But why is the frag grenade having a smoke plume like an old bomb fuse?

Gretchin safety regulations now require explosives to tick or smoke. Too many comrades died with a live grenade in hand wondering why nothing happened upon pulling the pin. It's a revolushonary idea, but these are revolushonary times.

Haha with all this talk of revolutionaries I've wondered at times why they haven't done a variation as a Che Guevara Goblin complete with beret, star and facial hair. Maybe a cigar too. Might be a little too political though. Then again there's still people wearing Che t-shirts today.
Anyway I like the Christmas theme Red Gobbos. They also include rules for WH40k and Age of Sigmar.
Would certainly be interesting if we get another Black Gobbo this year too or something else related. Hmm or that's what the Halfling Sniper Luncheon preview was for. Normally there's a Boxing Day figure as well though I think.

I personally have some reasons to believe that st. nicholas may have himself been fictional, especially considering most if not all his real life accounts being rather fluffed, one being fistfighting with arianus during a conclave at the council of nicea, another being dropping bags of gold through a window for some poor girls wedding, and so on'.. (as I said before, he also became a patron of thieves and seafarers and his birthplace was disputed aswell, some said he was turkic, some said he was slavic and his body was supposedly shipped overseas multiple times due to this)
I just raise eyebrows over it..
Wether or not he was an allegorical saint' aside, st. Nicholas did not even historically wear red but gold and white as was ascribed to his supposed position as bishop; generally an alb and neutral chasuble. The only red clothing bishops may wear is a red chasuble on good friday, pentecost, palm sunday and feast days of martyrs.
So where did the red santa come from? simple, Shamanic amanita muscaria culture, Santa is made to look like an amanita mushroom, which is also why there's the elves' and him living at -the north pole-' because it all comes from the hyperborean (utmost northern) culture.
Yes, hence the reindeer who in shamanism were used to ingest amanita muscaria.
