Just like the sprawling "what makes a dead game" discussion in the Discussion forum, that is entirely dependant on your definition.
Models are being bought. Armies are being made. People play games. People use the same minis for other editions of Epic. Folks still actively play games that haven't had mainstream spotlight or official support for decades.
That is not dead which can eternal lie; with strange aeons, even LI might thrive.

It depends on your area. I remember going to a store in Mississippi once, and they had more BattleTech players congregated in one place than I'd ever seen. For me it was a wow! moment fir them it was the second Sunday in the month.
I'm sure if you travel around you will find players. I remember being at a local shop where a guy lamented that no one played Blood Bowl. The shop owners let him put up a flyer (this story takes place in 2001) and within 2 weeks they had a season in progress.
My point is that the game might not be "dead" in your area, you might just have people at your shop who stopped putting those minis in their carryall because they never saw anyone playing.
Ask around, I bet you'll find more players than you expected to find.

Well, it’s for you, as the maker of the claim, to provide the evidence.
Thus far? You’ve a single anecdote about your local area (with no indication of what searches you’ve made) and a claim about “decent” battle reports.
Here’s one from just four days ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzvL6LWRJQQ&list=PLVOgEINpWj60bhEV44svlK7JXVopLYTg0
Mechanicum has only just been released, alongside the latest expansion book just this week. We’ve seen various Mechanicum and Dark Mechanicum toys on the way.
Is it dead? No. Absolutely not.
It’s a game still in its infancy, being a little over a year old, and not one many have existing models or terrain for.
Games take time to grow, even GW games with the built in advantages of GW’s marketing reach and market penetration. Age of Darkness had been around for nearly a decade when the current plastic version came out, and so hit the ground running with an existing, and fanatical, player base. 40K is 37 years old. The Old World is a continuation of GW’s former flagship, and so a lot of folk had existing models and armies to get cracking with off the bat. LI? Well, it’s not the first Epic, no. But there’s a load of entirely new stuff in there, with no direct comparison in what came before, even if we sensibly don’t worry too much about the exact scale of infantry and tanks.
In its first few months, stock was hard to come by. A nice problem for a fledgling game to have, but a problem all the same. Because sure you’ve sold out, strongly indicating there’s an appetite for the game. But if others can’t follow suit, because it’s sold out? You’re limiting access.
In general, GW’s stock issues appear to have been sorted out. And locally for me (Folkestone, Kent) there seems to be a decent turnover of stock at my FLGS. Certainly new releases don’t hang around long, and it’s not just me buying it.
Finally…. GW don’t really care if a given game is seen to be played. The sales figures is what they need. Provided it’s turning a profit on its own (not that they publish such in their annual results, and never have) it’s safe to say they’ll continue to invest.

We have no hard numbers, and it's difficult that we will.
We only have hearsay and anechdotal evidence, just like with any other GW game.
But two new factions have been added this month to the game, which would be indicative of it not being dead, at least for the moment.
Also, I don't play the game as I didn't like it. I still play Epic 3rd edition ^^

Stuff keeps rotating off the shelves at a solid pace, even at multiple FLGS just near my local area. I'm in about ten or so Epic / LI -related Facebook groups where people are pumped about new models and show off their projects daily. Couple of Discords too, like Age of Darkness (new people) and Specialist Command (Epic veterans). There are batreps out there, from folks like Tabletop Standard, Play On Tabletop etc.
As for other editions, Epic: Armageddon (4th) is the most widely favoured for its great gameplay, E40k (3rd) is making a comeback with a Remastered text for very large games and it's not like NetEpic (tweaking 2nd, on which LI is heavily based) hasn't been actively kept up as well. There are UK, French and American tournaments like Fall In. Hearing from the grapevine, Aussies are also returning from their couple of years of hibernation.
My personal circles mainly play E:A, but I know folks who prefer all the others as well.

The Gothimos Group in Northern California just held a 19 player megabattle event with a 38' long table. Folks played 2k forces with Titanicus and Legions on top of each other.
That's pretty alive to me.

I'm under the impression that LI has a huge number of collectors compared to actual players.
I mean, the ratio collectors/players could be even way higher than other GW games. it makes sense because the minis and armies look wonderful and the game is meh.

The Marine and Auxilia FOMO boxes are still available which doesn't seem great.
I could actually get some use out of the Auxilia box, but it is hard to justify with the precipitous drop in interest locally.

Too many cockups to mention but all of Epic 30K deserves to be sunk by now. But the fact is that it's model range is well stocked, even if crickets are chirping in the local area for the game itself. It also has the 3rd party support of Battlebling, Vanguard and Bitz Blitz...
2025 could be a brand new beginning for Epic as LI goes into the new year with a healthy six factions to chose from. I also think we're going to hear something about Adeptus Titanicus very soon, given that Dark Mechanicum will be introduced to that game this side of Christmas.
I'm now willing to jump in but undecided which way to turn, but that's talk for another thread... Automatically Appended Next Post: Robert Facepalmer wrote:The Marine and Auxilia FOMO boxes are still available which doesn't seem great.

If those boxes were given indie discount they'd be gone by now. That said, the Mechanicum box seems well stocked with it's discount and I'm considering it...

Were they really FOMO boxes? They sold out and came back in again. I've heard a few people discussing, including a store manager, the view being it's basically epic combat patrols. Automatically Appended Next Post: Apart from that I know of at least 4 clubs in the near area to me that consistently playing it.
Just because you can't find it being played nearby doesn't mean it's dead.

They’re not FOMO boxes and indies can stock them. They’re on the order spreadsheet sent out by GW for indie stores.

@ OP: are you kidding!? It's selling well, new releases sell out here and have caps on how many you can buy. Li's being played by more people than at launch. Plastic only -pmayers just got a 3rd/4th faction to buy which will be good for game variation.
Look beyond discord and forums. On the FB gaming groups, LI groups now have upwards of 10k members. The big scale 30k groups have about double that but have amassed that since V1 over many years. LI has only been out a year. Daily hobby discussion there, much more active than here on dakka.
Some of us play both LI or the previous EA30k with the models. That ruleset is great btw.
LI badly needs a points rebalancing but is very well worth getting into. The big ones can be house ruled until then.

Words of wisdom.
I can't find a single definition of a dead game that fits LI.

From my anecdotal experience, absolutely not.
If you are judging it by the level of play and ubiquity of 40k, then perhaps it is, but then you would be classing every other game as 'dead' too.
I will say that the very poor marketing effort by GW (barely available in their stores and as far as WD is concerned, it does not exist) but the online Epic communities have grown a lot (as said above, many thousands of new members in existing Epic groups, and new groups forming) and a lot of FLGS headline new releases - they would not do this if it was not selling well. GW, for it's part, would not be lining up successive new releases either if it had bombed.
If you are struggling to find opponents my advice would be to join some FB groups (Middlehammer Epic or Epic 30k Legions Imperialis), or even post with your local gaming store/club and ask for games. I would say it's a high chance there will be some players, even if they are not there playing week in and week out.

I've seen this argument hashed out online many times over- if this is what makes a game dead, then in which case 40k is also now dead as no one in my local area plays 40k. I run a very small gaming group and none of us have touch 40k in many years now, though some of us do use a handful of 40k models for other 40k adjacent games but I don't think any of us have played 'generic' 40k as a game since perhaps 3rd or 4th edition.
So that's it, Games Workshop need to pack up now. 40k is a dead game. Its cash cow is gone.
(The fact that I live in out in the sticks shouldn't matter, the original poster didn't define their 'local area' either)
Legions is a specialist game, that requires a little effort on the behalf of people collecting if they want to find other gamers. You can't just roll into FLGS and expect people to have €2000 worth of product to play games with. Especially for a game/scale with a proven track record for being abandonware from GW since the 80s.
Personally I know 'locally' (ie more like in the wider county) people have had a hard time getting the game going but there are a few people trying to collect and play. My group have wiped several places out of Legions stock on more than one occasion but are not touching the rules at all, not when there are 'complete' Epic rules that let our whole group play and not just those that want to play heresy era armies (A game with Orks/Orcs is pretty much is a no-go in our group).
