I didn't know where to post this, but I came across this on Mercari, and I've never seen it before anywhere.
It's too rich for my blood, but it's a pretty cool model. It looks legit, but I can't find any more info on the Internet about it.
If it was unreleased to the public, I wonder how the seller would have gotten his hands on it?
He calls it a "Sonic Field Gun." Anyone here know anything?

I recognize the tracks, they are Leman Russ / Chimera tracks.

This is just an undetailed cannon glued to some undersized tracks. No visible hint on what it's supposed to shoot, no armor plates, no imperial aquila's/coghead insignia and far too spindly/fragile, I'd call this an unfinished conversion.

Edit: the "unreleased" bit is technically correct though, they can't release what they don't make

Huh, go figure.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Interesting. So a genuine design.

However, whilst not drawing a conclusion? Super rare, unreleased model sprayed up could be a sign of a recast.

Certainly enough of an amber flag for me to not take the risk.

Well, I'm a dummy. Turns out, if I search "unreleased 40k minis" instead of "Sonic Field Gun," the answer just drops into my lap! What a novel idea!
According to this site (which has a bunch of fun, cool stuff on it -- they even have an "Elvis Marine" body and head!) it is, indeed, a legitimate model -- there are even a couple other big guns that use the same chassis:

Here's some pictures of the different parts:

Still, I wonder how this guy managed to get one? Seems like it would have to be a recast, as Grotsnik said -- would you really spray paint what might be an extremely rare model?

Edit: I messaged him to ask about it. It's more than I could justify paying, but I'd sure like to know what the story is (if there is one) about how he got his hands on it.

Second edit: Whoops! I missed grahamdbailey's post above, where he beat me to the punch!

Looking at them, I wonder if these wound up serving as the "prototypes" for the Kataphron Servitors?

The spray could be someone starting work before they knew what they had.

But, for recasters, selling ready sprayed can hide tell tale signs, like double mould lines.

As I said, I’m not saying it is, just that it’s an amber flag which would put me off.

If I had such an item? Sure, why wouldn't I?
Now of course I'm a notoriously slooow & erratic painter - so assembled things in my collection can (& often do) go a great many years without paint. Or even primer/base coat....
But the intent is there.

Heck, something that rare might even fast-track the inspiration to get it, and a small force to use it with, painted up.

I'm in this boat. I was lucky enough to score one of the old unreleased Epicast Imperial Knights in 40k scale. Yes, I painted it, and I do use it alongside my current plastic knights. I also have an unreleased Inquisitor scale Necron Warrior that looks like a scaled-up version of the 2nd edition metal warriors. Totally painting that one too....eventually.

Some collectors want things as they were when they were fresh made - ideally in the box. Perfect, preserved, frozen in time.

Others tear open the box and use something until its beaten, half replaced, botched together and still just going.

Between the two sits everyone else.

To be truthful, I used to be the collected stuff, mint in box type of guy, then I lost it all.

So now the plan is to enjoy it as it comes.
