The new magnetic attachment is also something I'm looking forward to. Apparently the analog sticks are also using a new magnet tech so they shouldn't have the drift issues.
I'll likely still get the 3rd party handles with grips (so much an improvement over standard joycons); but yeah I'm excited for this - esp as its backward compatible.
Hopefully a good many developers get on board with switch 2 patches for games
Switch 2 is just a slightly larger Switch 1 in design. If you liked the original design then you sort of kind of just have to like the new.
Personally the only thing I think they could have done would be to include the angled hand grips that the 3rd party grips often had which do help holding it; over the joycons very flat angled sides. Otherwise why change what works; esp when they are going for backward compatibility. You don't need all the buttons in new places just to "look cool"
While I have enjoyed my Switch and Switch Lite, and this Switch 2 looks pretty cool. I kinda wish it was called "Super Switch" because the SNES is still my favorite nintendo console.
And I still want a Windwaker remake for the Switch.
I imagine we'll probably give this one a miss. Got a Switch Lite for my youngest and a family Switch, and they just don't really see any action - not since my eldest 'completed' Mario Kart.

Prime 4 is likely to be a launch title if not in the first year, so at least half of that will be covered.
Castlevania is going to struggle unfortunately, though the collections are really solid on the Switch.
I'm guessing that Prime: Beyond will be compatible with both old and new Switch consoles. Otherwise there's going to be a lot of upset Switch 1 owners. Another concern is that in 2007 Prime: Corruption took us as close to a VR interactive experience as possible and we're now in 2025 waiting for a...gaming tablet experience. Crickets chirp...
Dread...hmmmm. After Samus Returns I didn't care what they did next so long as it didn't involve anymore cheap instant-death, invincible-killer-robot chases. Summer 2021 and that trailer told me everything I needed to know. Glad I didn't waste my time and money.

Are you expecting Nintendo to do a VR system? I honestly don't see them doing one anytime soon, if ever.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
I like it and the backwards compatibility is a good thing. I won't upgrade my Switch 1 but when it dies I'll probably replace it with the Switch 2.

I think it's more the fact it's all black. My switch has a black centre but blue and yellow joycons, and my wifes Lite is teal so looks pretty distinctive.
Off the top of my head an all black vertical console could be a steam deck, PS5 Remote, PSP, Game Gear. I can't think of any hand-helds that it doesn't look like, other than the DS and Game Boy.

I'm very sure that there will be other colour variations. Nintendo has always done a bunch of coloured alternatives for their handheld consoles for various franchises (you can almost 100% expect at least one if not two Zelda themed ones)
Plus additional joycon colours and that's before you hit 3rd parties.
Heck chances are I'll be keeping an eye on what Hori do. I really love their controllers for the Switch. Sure they didn't have wireless and no rumblepack; but to me neither of those were a problem - the big thing was having those comfortable hand edges to them. Just a much more comfortable shape than standard joycons
Yeah, feels at least more of a hardware update to the console than the big jump it was from the Wii U (both in terms of branding and how it was focused for it's usage). Feels less of a day one buy and more one down the line once the Nintendo exclusives starting releasing only on it or if the graphical fidelity/console power is really that big of a change.
I'm mainly interested to see if we'll get a new Smash title to come along with the Switch 2, since Smash Ultimate kind of feels like the definitive version, especially with its roster covering so many IP. I think they might do a Smash Ultimate updated version but I'm unsure if they can start from scratch again in the same way.

Very true. It just seems really dark for a launch/preview though, when the previous generations were brighter with either colour or white.
It just seems a bit grown up and less fun than I was expecting. But I'm a 40 year old man so it's hardly going to put me off.

Without writting a damn essay on the subject...I certainly wouldn't rule it out. And Nintendo has been dabbling in the technologies that are useful in VR since the Virtual Boy itself.
I feel like VR is in the "here to stay" area rather than its much earlier attempts (I remember it being a thing in the 90s once). However I think its still something that really wants its own dedicated system because it changes so much about how you interact with the game and system setup. I personally don't feel like the Switch is powerful enough on its own to do that.
Plus I think it would work better as its entire own thing.
Now perhaps someone sells a switch-headset so it can be the headset screen, but even then its not something I'd expect
I absolutely agree on a standalone headset for VR.
When I first wore the Oculus Go it felt like the next logical step from the original Wii. On the same day I was building a Unity archviz demo and thinking that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption would be a natural fit, if given the motion controllers from the Wii.
But I've derailed the topic, perhaps. Not my intention as I get wrapped up in the computing world and Nintendo means a lot to me. They sensibly wised up to not having the most powerful console on the market - focusing on the overall experience and all that jazz.
Sigh...does anyone remember Faxanadu? Love that game to bits...

To be fair until it actually comes out and the marketing ramps up - we likely won't have much to talk on for a while yet.
Depending on price and finances I'm not even sure if I'll be a front-line buyer. A lot also hinges on game performance of legacy games and store accounts. Ergo I want to wait and see what happens; both in terms of what games/functions don't work and also what developers respond with switch 2patches and so forth.
Ergo if a bunch of games I own don't work that well I'll just hold onto my switch; however if everything 100% works and gets patches and so forth and its all good then I might well sell it on - even though I know it will devalue fast
I suspect its effectively 100% compatible, but some of the gimmicky stuff like that Fitness Ring thing isn't physically compatible with the new JoyCons. People are very hung up on that asterisk but I suspect its very much a legal requirement more than anything.
Yeah but I'm also interested in seeing if firms will leverage the switch 2 getting better hardware to improve their game performance.
Shin Megami Tensai V already had to scale back their visuals in the switch version to cope with smoother framerates; it would be neat to see games like that getting a switch 2 patch to bring things up to standard again since the 2 has more powerful hardware in both docked and undocked modes.
Looks cool, and it's cool that it's backwards compatible. I use my Switch mostly to play old PS and PS2 era games that have Switch Ports, and sometimes to play some PC games with decent ports. The only Switch exclusives I have are Octopath Traveller (haven't gotten around to playing it yet) and Breath of the Wild (really fantastic but not gonna replay it any time soon).
So I'll probably keep my old switch for a few more years while I work through my small backlog of games. I don't have as much time for computer games as I used to so we'll see if the new one is a good choice or if the Steam Deck makes more sense.
