Stuck in the snow.

This isn't intended as a whine thread, but I'm curious if anyone else has found that the lack of Legion unique units has impacted your motivation to engage with LI?

I play IF in HH/40k, but I've been thinking of changing it up and playing either WB or NL for a change of pace. Every time I think of building a force only to not have Gal Vorbak, Mahara Gal, or Night Raptors... it just feels like I might as well just make more IF.

I know Epic scale is built around abstraction at it's heart but lacking the unique visual elements of each Legion makes the whole exercise feel about as cynical as you can get with 18 "narratively significant armies" being differentiated only by different army level special rules.

Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?

Why did GW decide to launch Legion Imperialis instead of Epic 40K? The reason is because it limited the number of factions they had to create models for.

Sure, if the sales of LI justifies it they'll create more Legion specific units. For now there's no need to do it though. The same would not have been true if the game was in the 40K setting.

As for how it limits the game itself, I can't really comment on that. I haven't picked it up, simply because I have no interest in the Horus Heresy setting.

I don’t entirely disagree. A bit of flavour and distinction is always welcome.

But the scale just isn’t right here. In terms of unit stats? Gal Vorbak wouldn’t really stand out from Terminators. Both are heavy shock infantry after all, well equipped to see of more numerous foes in pretty short order.

Ashen Circle? At this scale, there’s just not a ciggie paper between them and Assault Marines.

Is it something I’d like to see? I guess. Certainly I wouldn’t be against it or mad about it. More variety is usually a good thing. But the game doesn’t need it. I don’t know it would really add anything to the playing experience.

I don't mind unit differentiation, but generally it is an unnecessary hassle that the games do not particularly need and it contributes to the lack of faction diversity. Keeping up the SKU's for 36+kits just to give each legion their slightly different terminators and even more slightly different jump or assault troops could already have covered two whole factions in midhammer style.

There's no reason you couldn't add them in for visual flavour on your own. I made my Deathshrouds just for the fun of it, even if their most frequent use is just as character stands in E:A.

I normally also like unit differentiation even when it really doesn't matter rules-wise - it's just fun to have those minor differences. In LI I find that I don't mind its absence so much though, and instead I try to construct forces that are distinguishable at a larger scale - such as my current efforts to build up a believable Secutarii (Titan escort) force. It's not a thing that has specific rules, but by judicious use of the ally rules and the existing formations (and a unifying color scheme), then I think I can put together something that might as well have been an actual distinct army.

Do you mean rules (which you can make your own) or minis (which you can paint differently, but conversions are hard at this scale indeed)?

I certainly do not feel that way. The og game had marines fighting marines, everything about the armies was identical for both sides. This makes Epic scale distinctive from regular 40k/30k in my mind. its less about special snowflake units and more about meatgrinder, sheer weight of numbers and combined arms warfare. Its supposed to "hit different", as its its own game, not 30K on a 10mil scale.. Although you can also play 30K with the minis, if you're so inclined..

Instead of Gal Vorbak et al, you're going to be fielding DOZENS of superheavies, and several Warlords! You dont get to do that in 28mil

"The larger point though, is that as players, we have more control over what the game looks and feels like than most of us are willing to use in order to solve our own problems"

I feel the same way about the (non-titan) big stuff - where's the Ordinatus, Capitol Imperialis, etc. ?

But yes, why did GW bother to upscale the game so you can tell armour marks apart if they're not going to do anything with it?

Going off on a slight tangent - there haven't been any FW resin releases for LI yet, has there?

I mostly agree... I like visual variation, but in most cases the minutiae actually bothers me, in a game of massed combat and maneuver. It is, simply put, not what I'm here for.

Of course, I say this as someone who thinks the best edition of Epic is 3rd, so...

All in the rules of the older editions

Do we need any other reason than "because it looks frigging cool"?

Nope, no resin LI. Well. Not counting resin stuff originally released for AT.

I’m fairly sure a relatively recent article/interview confirmed it’s set to be All Plastic going forward.
