I have had bad experiences with gloss varnish. The gloss reflects light and higlights parts I didn't intend to highlight. I wonder if satin varnish is a good compromise?

Yeah, didn't change much. Just a head swap and added a few horns on his back. Hopefully a bit more paint will help.

Hi all,

Here are some pics of the demon prince WIP.
The hair is finished. The weapon is done, I like how the "well worn" look came out. The horns are done ... for now, they still aren't what I'm looking for.

Take care

Is there any way you could dangle some wolfy-type bits from his waist, or perhaps attach skulls to the robes? I think the problem is that he looks totally unique on top, and just like the Nightbringer everywhere else.

Hi all,

I finished painting the Demon Prince. If time permits I will add a few things to make him more "wolfy", but for now I want to finish the remainder of the army.

Next up is the last unit of plague marines.

Thanks and take care,

Hi all,

Here are a few pics of the army as it stands now. Mechanicon is about four months away and given the pace at which I paint I should be able to finish this army with a couple weeks to spare.

I've built a display board which mounts to a wheeled cart for ease of transport at a tourney or similar event. The foam portion is 2' x 2' which can be swapped depending on which army is being used. A apce belw holds codexi, rulebook, army list, dice, etc. Underneath is a nice are to hold a cooler for various drinks.

Thanks and take care

Thanks!

Actually, I started out painting it to match the bases of the models. One problem, you couldn't see the models very well. Everything was a shade of gray with little contrast and the models just seemed to meld with the background. So after several attempts at adding layers of white paint and not getting anywhere I decided to paint the display white. Now you can see the models and still get a feel for what I was trying to achieve with the model bases.

Hi all,

Okay, after working on some other things not related to wargaming (work, house, vacations) I've realized Nov.5, 2010 is just around the corner and I still have a lot of models to paint. Nov. 5 is the first night of the Mechanicon and I have to focus on finally finishing the Sons of Pus.

Only one unit of eight berzerkers with rhino and a vindicator to go!

The following are pics of a third pack of plague marines and WIP of their rhino.

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. Please feel free to continue

I plan on making a Pus Wolf Demon( as suggested very early in this thread) next year and will consider any suggestions for further units.

Thanks and take care

Yeah, those are Deadly Chicken's. He was showing an example. Nice idea, but you're right. It doesn't fit this army.

thanks.

Here are pics of the finished rhino. I went with fewer streaks of rotting flesh highlights than the first rhino. I do prefer this look.

Good news. Only eight infantry and two vehicles remain.

Hi all,

Just a few WIP pics of the berzerker pack.

I am undecided about the helmets. It's not that I am displeased with the results it's just so ... bright. I am thinking either keep the edges of the "horns" orange and paint the remainder like the rest of the armor, or keep the interior part of the "horns" orange an paint the remainder like the rest of the armor.

The last pic is of my painting station.

Hi all,

The Berzerkers are done.
I tried a couple of different variations with helmet colors. Ultimately, the original all orange helmets looked the best to me.

A bit of my fluff for this unit. The Berzerker Claws are new recruits to the warband. Therefore, they get the leftover / unwanted equipment (except the Skull champion). They also are feeling the affects of a tainted Canis helix and have an uncontrollable drive to get into hand-to-hand combat which is why they are berzerkers and not plague marines.

Only two vehicles remain. A rhino for the berzerkers and a vindicator. It's about five weeks to Mechanicon and all should be ready without to much trouble.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Well after two years or so of painting the day has finally come. The Sons of Pus are finished (for now)!!!

Here are pic of the Berzerker Rhino and Chaos Vindicator.

I'll post pics of the full army after Mechanicon. Hopefully, Papa Nurgle will bestow his blessing upon his followers and influence the dice to above average rolls.

Thanks and take care.

Hi all

Well I made it back from the Mechanicon.

It was a great weekend.

The Sons of Pus managed to take second place for "Best Painted". The TOs used a checklist to determine painting score. I somehow received a 47/50. Using their checklist I figured anything from a 34 - 44 based on the criteria listed.

I started a battle report if any are inteterested.

Next up are Imperial Guard. When GW released Apocalypse they had army deals. I picked up the Guard Company and Sentinel deal and it's about time to put them together.

I love the idea and the conversions, but the painting seems a bit blobby, especially the highlights. I know Nurgle is supposed to look dirty and rough, but you should consider using a smaller brush, and putting less paint on the brush when you highlight. Also, I would try transitioning between highlights and shadows a little less drastically, the almost pure white highlights right next to the almost black shadows on the purple horns is a bit much.

Don't take the criticism badly, the above is just my bigoted opinion

Still, I love the idea!

Ach, crivens!!! I needed to hear this two years ago At least I have something to consider as the army grows.

Actually, the Blobby highlights were intentional (for the most part) in order to give it a Nurgley feel.

I see what you mean about the purple to white highlights. I was trying for very small highlights with the white but obviously layed it on a bit thick. When you say small brush how small are you talking?

Thanks and take care

I am thinking, for a small brush, about size 0? Trying to do really smooth transitions from one color to the next on horns is very hard, so just keep practicing!

Very nice. I love your style. The first few painted minis had me reading through.

The orange noggins? Not so much. You may still win me over if you can pull it all together in the army though.

Hi all,

Looks like I will be attending The Colonial GT in March. I will be taking the Sons of Pus (no more infantry guard lists, ugh). I haven't used these guys for a fair bit and they need a little TLC.

I did change the army list a bit. Out is the lone Obilterator. In are two plague marines and warptime on the Demon Prince.

The first thing up is a new display board. I liked the previous version, but it was very cumbersome. It was 24" x 24" and could be mounted on a portable cart. I picked up two wood painting panels from Dick Blick. One is 12" x 24" and the other is 20" x 24". Both are 1 5/8" deep.
They can be found here: http://www.dickblick.com/products/american-easel-wood-painting-panels/

I next cut a piece of 1" thick foam and 1/8" masonite to fit inside the panel (10 1/4" x 22 1/4").

I drew a grid pattern on the masonite and circled the areas where to cut out holes.

I used a 1 1/8" hole saw for the 25mm bases and a jigsaw to cut out the 60mm base.

All my infantry models have metal washers on the bottom of each base. So I put a piece of magnetic stripping between the foam and the masonite. It gives it just enough tack to keep models from falling over during moves from table to table.

I sprayed the masonite with a layer of gray.

Than a couple layers of white.

Because the board is a wee bit snug I marked each spot for each specific model.

Pics of the army on the board.

I will have some touch ups to do on some models and make new army lists.

When I am finished with the Space Rangers I plan on adding some new models (like a Defiler). The new Chaos codex will hopefully be out by than.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

The Colonial GT requires three objective markers. So I decided to make five.

I figured since I was going to have to make three it wouldn't be difficult to add another couple.

Nothing real fancy. Just used five 25 mm bases and copied same insignia as on the rhinos. Also the same style of greenstuffing.

Hopefully, the weather will cooperate in the next few days and I will be able to prime them.

Thanks and take care

HI all,

Well, it's been a mere two-and-a-half years since the last update.

I came home from work one day a couple of months ago to see a smallish cardboard box. Inside the box was an Ultraforge Greater Plague Demon. The model was a gift from a friend who knew I wanted this model, but couldn't justify buying it (for many reasons). I was in the final stretch of a Grey Knights / Inquisitor and retinue project so this arrived at a perfect time. I had wanted to get back to this army, but another project always seemed to get in way. Now there was no excuse. Time to get Nurgley!

The Ultraforge Greater Plague Demon will count as a Great Unclean One. However, in order to use it with the Sons of Pus I also needed a troops choice to make an allied detachment. I have oodles and oodles of Nurglings laying about so I decided to make four bases.

First up, GUO parts

Second, added a pin to make the bond stronger (when it is time for assembly)

Third, Added a "growth" to match the Sons of Pus

Fourth, base is ready for priming. More on bases to follow.

Fifth, started adding some pieces of fur (to tie in with wolf theme).

Work on Nurglings has progressed as well.

I will have three nurglings on each base. I tried four per base but it was too cluttered. Notice the ring 'o greenstuff. The plan is to build a lip in order to make the bases appear as if the nurglings are making their way through a pool of muck, pus, general grossness. It is a holdover idea from the original Sons of Pus that I could never get to work. Recently, I've had some success with Secret Weapons Miniatures Realistic Water and Tamiya Clear yellow.

Bases with gravel

Bases with "growths". One Nurgling will be in the growth portion.

Finally, about two years ago I picked up a Scibor Miniatures 28mm Rotten Lord. He will be my counts-as Typhus. Not much is done with him...yet

A little more work has been completed.

I added a bit more greenstuff sections of fur, growths, and pustules. I was able to put a few layers of paint on the model with an airbrush. I am attempting to refine my pre- shading skills. Still have room to improve, but it is getting better.
Starting with the Great Unclean One. It's not as bright as the photo shows. Guess it's time to practice with the camera.

A slightly better photo from a bit above the model.

Some leftover Plaguebearers to use for test purposes

Counts-as Typhus is coming along. Just added some GS.

With Pre-shading (although it is difficult to see due to my complete lack of understanding how to work a camera).

Hopefully I'll be able to get some paint on the plaguebearers over the next few weeks. Does anyone have a preference for Nurgle demon colors. I'm thinking of trying a few options.

Thanks and take care

HI all,

I was able to get some paint on the Plaguebearers. I went with five test models and some have a few variations. Some are more traditional than others.

Start with a group shot and than individual models.

Group

"A" - Reaper Master Series Paint (MSP) Undead Skin triad with three different washes. Right side with Secret Weapon Miniatures (SWW) Fallout, belly and left leg Tamiya (TAM) Clear Yellow / Clear Green / Thinner (1/1/4), head and left arm SWW green.

"B" - MSP Stone Grey triad with three different washes. Left side with Citadel Shade (CS) Agrax Earthshade, right bottom with Citadel Technical (CT) Typhus Corrosion, right top with Vallejo Smoke.

"C" - MSP Violet Red traid with a wash of TAM clear red / TAM clear blue / Thinner (1/1/4).

"D" - MSP Sun Yellow traid wiith four different washes. Left leg with SWW Yellow, right leg with SWW Fallout, Left arm CS Cassandora Yellow, right arm TAM clear yellow.

"E" - MSP Orange triad with a wash of TAM clear Orange / Thinner (1/2)

Group - Slight lower angle than above photo.

The plan is to pick two or three variations to paint two squads of fourteen. I feel it will be more interesting to look at and paint if some non-traditional colors are used. Innards, tentacles, etc., color will be based on skin tone.

Does anyone have a preference? Any thoughts of color options not shown?

Lastly, my son was watching me take photos after which he insisted on taking photos of his mini-figs (he's almost four).

Thanks and take care
