The hatches are not glued on, but the exhaust and vents on the rear are done, almost done with a side sponson (no pic), riveted a bit, nothing big. As you can see this fellow will use baneblade tracks (I've got a pile lying around, will need more) since this doesn't seem to be a pre-heresy vehicle.

Man, I don't have the time to paint anything right now, I wish I did, and I wish I had the ability to paint at a high standard as well. I want to finish my build projects in the time I have left before I go back to school to finish my thesis. One day, hopefully...

Thanks to all my readers so far! Well, by now everyone must have the inkling that I enjoy the more obscure aspects of Space Marine history, pre-heresy, rogue trader, and what not. So for today's little update we'll talk about the Vindicator and its fun little history as a 40k scale model. I don't know to much about the history of Epic, so that aside, I'm going off what I know off the top of my head. Initially, the first Vindicator in 40k was a scratch build tutorial presented in an old issue of White Dwarf (118), later Armorcast released a resin add on piece that was basically made from the White Dwarf tutorial, both used the Rhino mk I chassis. I snagged a modified re-cast of one of these kits off the Electronic Bay. There was another add on kit made around this time, but it seemed to be a more independent venture. Eventually, GW released an actual Vindicator kit also based on the mk I Rhino chassis, which included pewter parts for the cannon, top armor, and side armor. With the release of the mk II Rhino a new Vindicator was on its way. Forge World did it first, and then GW with a plastic kit practically identical to the FW one. The only real differences seemed to be that the FW kit did not include side armor (although they do sell it) and the top vents were exposed. The GW plastic kit has a top piece that can cover the vents, so one could easily build the GW kit to resemble the FW one, but why would anyone do that? Ok, fine, I'm sure this is all common knowledge, so after perusing some web sites associated with Epic, I saw the funniest looking model, the brick looking Vindicator Mk II:

So, my first scratch build attempt was to build one of these, but I made it too big. Now, with all the other projects I've done I found myself with a lot of scraps. Thus, I built a new one in a more appropriate size:

Here it is next to a Mk I Vind and a Mk IV Vind (I have the metal kit, it's overseas right now). I know there is no real consensus as to the mks, but this is how I see it, correct if I'm wrong, there may easily be a lot of 40k history I'm unaware of. Enjoy!

First, I have to say I think you did a great job with that scratch Vindi. Pretty close to the Epic version. I do however think older Epic minis were made with oversized and exagerated guns/accutaments, so the small minis could be easaly distiguished on the table because if the gun is that big the shell for it must be massive and at best there would be a single reload inside the rhino for it(but I dont think so). Anyway keep plugging along I think you are making some neat minitures.

I've given up on figuring out the logic behind certain vehicles, I agree that this particular design is a real clown cannon brick, but that's why I like it. I've been trying to figure out the particular history behind this fellow, I know that the Vindicator mk I existed in Epic scale, and it seems to be older than the mk II I made:

http://www.galactic-intrigue.com/epicollector/Pages/2-Catalog/Catalog-Overview-Frames.html

Epicollector is a great resource site! As you can see the other Vinds made sport a more decent sized cannon, so why was the mk II given a clown cannon? Beats me.

I've never found any verification that the mk II Vind is older than the mk I Vind in Epic, that's what I initially thought, but the sources I've found seemed to say otherwise.

Ok! Riveting has taken longer than expected, or I've just been preoccupied with other side projects. First off, most of the riveting is done, just need to make more armored view ports for the side of my tank and I'll be practically finished. Then all I'll need to do is glue down the antennas, putty up the cracks, sand down some imperfections, glue on the side sponsons, and give it a primer coat. All relatively easy stuff! I will be done by next week! Here are some pics of the riveting I've done:

As I said before I've been tooling with some side projects. As a Christmas present to myself I got the Mk II Landraider from FW. I painted the interior before assembling it, only to accidentally break the bottom ramp, so the sucker doesn't completely open up. I may fix it one day if I get an extra bottom ramp piece, oh well...

I also got one of Chapter House Studios' Mk I Rhino conversion kits to use for my Razorback. I've also been modifying bitz in order to have all the weapon options. Here's the Lascannon and twin linked plasma guns:

Twin Linked heavy flamers:

And as an added throwback, twin linked heavy bolters with a gunner a la the Mk I Razorback of old:

During all this I snagged a $20 Land Raider Crusader. One friend sold me the Crusader upgrade pewter bitz for $10, and another friend sold me a poorly painted LR missing its side sponsons for just $10. Lucky for me the FW Mk II LR doesn't need its plastic side sponson parts, so there you go! group shot:

My Mega Heavy Death Tank is finished. I can only prime it now, but hopefully one day I'll get it painted. It has been 6 months now since I started scratch building, my projects have gotten bigger and better, I think. Well, I'm happy with what I've accomplished. Sadly I must leave my country in order to go abroad and finish my schooling, perhaps I'll find time to do other projects while I'm over there in the trenches of academia. Thanks to everyone who has followed my progress thus far. The below pics show the monster from various angles and with my other projects for size comparison.

And finally a dreadnought missile launcher based off the old epic dreadnought missile launcher (had nothing better to do).

Now thats a super heavy! Really nails the detail level perfectly. Often I see big scratchbuilds and the scale of the detail is all over the place. This is perfect. You just have to paint it now.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Alright, I wasn't sure that huge tank was going to work, but it did. And now I want one. That montage of all the rare tanks together is stunning. Now they just need the most badass paint job on the planet. But you know, no pressure.

Yea, it's a pretty decent tank. Too bad he made it stupidly overpowered with the addition of TWO storm bolters. Putting two most broken weapons in the game on something like this....*sigh*

Seriously... sometime people need to realize you shouldn't take these things too far. I mean who's ever going to let him use it. He might be best off counting them a single twin-linked stormbolter. Whats next? Maybe he'll show us a second lasgun on the back of that fellblade turret. Its just too crazy.
