Just because a lot of people buy this product doesn't mean they will all show up to the same conventions as you. Paint and flock your board then see how other people are setting up theirs and set yours up a little differently. Plan ahead for how your army should be displayed on a central hill, in a diagonal valley, or with both hills on one edge. The modular design should help you out a little when dealing with a ton of "clones".

I agree. I am in the same boat as you. This piece has also been the deciding factor for me not to make a tray of my own.
I really think you are going to miss out on major sales if this thing isn't ready at or before Gencon, Romeo. I guarantee you I will not be buying any battlefoam(I already have an army transport) I guarantee you I would buy this tray at or before Gencon if you make it available. If not I might pick one up IF I attend another tournament in the future.
Adepticon is in like a month, Gencon is not till later in the year. They should definitely be ready by then.
I might end up picking one up with some more foam at Gencon if I can get away from my own booth, maybe I'll get lucky and BF will be a neighbor.
I meant adepticon. Using iPod in class typing small.
understandable, I congradulate you on getting your ipod to work with Dakka, mine seems to hate the place.

@Buttler
Add stuff to it I fully intend to use it as a template for my army and will add battlefield accessories/trees whatever matches my army that I buy it for
But yeah, i could see it becoming very prevalent on the tourney circuit.

Interesting product I must say, although I have a problem with it, no its not the price ( I think there is lots of plastic on that frame alone so its a competitive price IMO) its the concept I have problems with.
If I got this display I would have to create holes for my army bases and change the terrain textures and style to my preferences add in a considerable extra cost and time/work to this display... why not built my own from scratch if I have to spend time on it anyway?
As is its a nice starting point for a display but it still needs lots of work to please my Pickyness and nerdyness.
I think it will sell like hotcakes and more power to you to come up with another sucessfull formula.

I don't think you are quite the target audience for this product!
This shouldn't (and won't) stop highly talented hobbyists like yourself from scratch-building army terrain boards for exactly the reason you pointed out. If you love (and are able) to make personalized boards then you might as well start from scratch, and I hope tournaments that give points for display boards keep rewarding those who do make magnificent display boards cause you deserve it.
But for the rest of us not so gifted folks, this thing looks like just the ticket.

To make
"thousands" without testing it, is a huge risk for a new company. Yea, GW can afford a few losing ideas and games, but this? BF makes great foam. One bad product out there and that is all people remember unfortunately. I know I customize all of my display boards. Using a tray, I create unique displays for very little money. No one wants "clones" of the same thing in the land of creation . Would have been a better idea to 'test market' this before spending a boatload of cash. If everyone is walking around with these boards at a con, where are they going to set them down? People will be clunking into one another.

The same place everybody already puts their display boards in a tournament...on the table between games and on the floor/chair during a game.
While space-wise it may not be ideal at a tournie to have every gamer walking around with a display board, that *is* what tournaments are pushing for generally, with handing out points to gamers who have them.
Again, nobody's saying you have to go out and buy this and stop making your own display boards...the opposite even. Those who are talented enough to make display boards will have unique ones that showcase their talents. For the other gamers, at least now their armies will look a little better at the tourney and be easier to move around.
And if you're worried about this product being the one that sinks Battlefoam...I think you better take a read at most of the comments in this thread. I think in general the tone would be 'chomping at the bit to get one'.

Actualy this is even more beneficial for tournies thinking about it. Often I would spend all that time on a tray and it would get knocked around by others yes while I play. this way I customize it and use it as a frame for my armies and when i'm in game just break it apart and pack it away until I need it. BRILLIANT!!!

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Looks like a great special purpose board.
If I did tourneys, I might get one.
One thing of concern to me is that models might skid on the surface.
That was my big dislike with the RoBB. Unless you texture the surface, models slide right off the thing.
That would be horrible for a carry/display tray. A slight jostle and your army is on the floor.
Though I can really see using it as a base for some putty work to hide magnets where needed.
I wonder if it is too big for using with Warmachine, 35pts. I will have to check that out.

Romeo, how hard is the plastic? I'm wondering if it would be possible to countersink some rare earth magnets, with corresponding magnets in the bases, so models will stay put, even while carrying the tray from table to table?

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

DeathGod - without getting into to much tech detail I can tell you that the boards are rock hard. We have the cross plastic on the back of all the parts to give the board durability over time. Think GW Battle Board backing but on steroids.
We also use a harder plastic then the GW board so it can last longer. We will be doing a demo of us running it over with a car when the item goes live next month. Look for that very soon. We actually already filmed it and the board survived with zero issues. Oh, keep in mind that the rails did get pulled off for the video.
Hope that helps.

Actually, I think you're missing my point. If this exact display table were made by GW at this exact same price instead of by BF, the responses would be completely opposite of what they are in this thread...
...I'm not saying BF shouldn't make and sell what they want or that people shouldn't buy from them. I'm saying that a lot of people on this Dakka are hypocrites and I'm calling them on it.
Unless you can find a particular person or person who's posted in this thread, and who you can quote as complaining about the Realm of Battle board previously, then your whole line of complaint is an irrelevant distraction in this thread. If you feel the compulsion to complain generally about what you perceive to be hypocrisy on the part of Dakka posters in their reactions to GW products vs. those of independent companies, maybe that's worth a thread in Dakka Discussions. You could even link back to this thread for reference. But from what I can tell, I don't think any of the people being positive in this thread WERE in fact negative in any of the RoB threads, at least over the price/value point, so your complaint is entirely off-topic.

I'll admit that I have had issues with the price of the GW Realms of Battleboard, and I also love this product from BF. I would be happy for this to cost around $35 and I think allot of what BF produces is out of my price range. That may very well be the only way BF can produce and sell their products at a profit, it might not be, for all I know they could be paying pennies for this tray and selling it at an insane profit. I am a retail manager and have worked in the retail sector for over 10 years. I know that mark-ups can be ridiculous, probably in ways some of you cannot even imagine. Regardless the issue is not relevant to this situation. We are talking about a $65 product versus a $290 product. That is a big difference in affordability. And there are more issues about the price tag on the GW RoB board than its final price, such as the advertised price versus the final cost and GW's overall pricing strategy in general.

Yeah, I will not be getting the Realm of Battle Board, nor this product, because I have no need for either. But I have to say, something that is overpriced at 65$ is not apples to apples compared to an overpriced $290 product. Especially when these respective products fill two different niches.

This is straying so far from the topic seriously. Battlefoam just posted a kick butt product. Now so many complain but you know what the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. I build my own boards but intend to pick one o fthese up as I can use it as a great foundation and not worry about it getting destroyed in transit. The GW realm boards have nothing to do with this product so why not just stop bringing it up. If you won't buy one of these fine then don't post because the rest of us like them.

I really don't think rated G was saying anything out of line. IMO, the previous mod comment by Mannahnin took this thread back off topic with a message that could easily be conveyed one on one with a PM. Rated G simply indicated that neither the RoB board or this tray are products he is interested in but that a $65 dollar product doesn't compare to a $290 product that is entirely unrelated and any discussion to that effect really doesn't belong here. I would urge the moderators to police this topic appropriately but don't contribute to the problem by derailing a thread that returned to an on topic discussion.

Great idea I love that it breaks down. Really that is an awesome product. will you be making custom tags for the front or is that something you would need to get else where? only thing I dislike is the price would have liked to see it more around 50 ish but still not bad at all glad to see something new on the market for tourny players.

Angeloftheblood - Yes, we will offer custom front plates so people can name their armies. We will also do custom logos in the middle of the boards at an additional cost. All of these along with the different panels will be released over the next several months. Custom work will be available as soon as the boards launch.
Pricing and pre-order information will all be available soon.
