Sarpe was on her way back to the cadet building when she saw a single figure burst through the doors at a run, heading away from the building like a startled rabbit, The admiral sighed and placed her cap back upon her head, then inflated her lungs.
"Commander Rose!" she bellowed, in a voice so loud and commanding several nearby cadets cowered, "you will stand your ground!"

Reynolds chuckled "Don't get ideas, I wouldn't be surprised if the fleet was split. I find it unlikely that Fleet command would be as incompetent to create a new battlegroup from rookies"
"It's likely that we'll be reassigned to group with other vessels with experienced CO's, or at the very least put the fleet on patrols."
Looking at the roster, Reynolds noticed a severe lack of escorts. There were only three escort vessels to the five capital ships, usually this was the other way round, with at least four escorts to each capital ship. What on earth were the geezers at Fleet command thinking? An interdiction force of bombers and frigates could cripple this fleet at a fraction of the cost of the entire fleet.
Looking at the overview of the fleet, there were also only two older recommissioned ships which were in all regards, expendable. The rest were newly commissioned, untested ships fresh from the shipyards with preliminary trials just completed. If this was some new tactic, Reynolds didn't like it. He had seen capital ships without escorts being ambushed before, and they lacked the maneuverability to avoid a mass of bombers and torpedoes. If they were sent on any serious exercise, it would be a slaughterhouse. Such experimental vessels should only be fielded in limited numbers to test their effectiveness, placing them all in one place was a massive gamble.

Garan looks to Reynolds, and considers his point. There really aren't enough escorts in the fleet.
he makes a mental note to ask the CO of the fleet about this once they were underway, and send a message to command if the CO doesn't know.

in game? LT commander, often just shortened to Commander, similar to the way LT colonels are refereed to as Colonel.

Lt commander is the lowest rank permitted to command a vessel in combat. let me copy out the list i have here Command Ranks of the Alliance Navy lowest to highest. Lt Commander Commander Captain Group-Captain (Commands a task-force. Lowest Rank able to command a Dreadnought) Commodore (Commands a two Task Force Fleet) Vice-Admiral. (Commands a sector fleet, usually four combined task forces) Admiral. (Command a quadrant. Two to Three Sector fleets) Fleet Marshal: (Leads the Navy.) Of course there are exceptions, and any rank can be called upon for special duties, Such and training an new batch of recurits of garrisoning a troubled world. EDIT: Normal Fleet Organization: Patrol: 3-4 frigates and/or 0-1 Cruisers Garrison 8-12 Frigates, 0-3 Cruisers Task Force: 12 frigates: 3-4 cruisers 0-2 Battleships/Carriers Sector Fleet: 24 frigates 8 cruisers, 2-4 Battleships/Carriers 0-1 Dreadnought Quadrant Fleet: 48 frigates 12-24 cruisers, 8-12 battleships, 0-3 Dreadnoughts Also: Line-breaker Squadron: 3 Dreadnoughts

Also, I've got a basic idea of how this story might pan out.. I wonder if there's any truth to it.. if so, we could all be in for one helluva ride! Just the way I like it..

Staring in disbelief at the scabbard at his side, he drew it slowly, finding no imperfections in the blade. He tested the weight, again finding it perfectly balanced. Doing some quick mental calculations, each one of these blades was worth a small fortune, and yet, these were given to each of us, all 9 of us.
Unable to resist, joesph wandered over to look at the data-pad that (raptortallon [sorrry cannot remember you name  ]) was waving around. Glancing down the list, he paused at his name, and his ship, a mars pattern destroyer, armed with lots of heavy weapons.
He collapsed, the emotion of the news washing over him in a blur. The last thing he saw before he dropped was the other cadets turning at the noise.
(thought id make it dramatic  )

Your Xo is another character of your devising, but story wise is pulled from those who didn't quite make it into Norton. He/She can be any rank lower than yours, from Sergeant to Midshipman, Ensign to Lieutenant, his/her authority comes from being your apprentice and having passed basic command tests. In essence, he/she knows enough to take over if the worst happens, and if he watches carefully enough he/she'll be given their own ship, gain a promotion to command rank, and the circle starts again. Think of being an XO as an easier, but longer taking, version of the training what your characters went through, but takes place in the field.
